State Government Exam Syllabus and State Board Basics

State exams10th to graduateCET and PET firstUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A state government exam syllabus is written by that state's own recruitment board, and it almost always mixes three things: general studies with a strong dose of the state's history, geography and culture, reasoning and basic maths, and a language paper in Hindi, English or the state language. The posts range from clerk, patwari and lekhpal to junior assistant and village development officer.

This hub explains how state recruitment works, with the common eligibility tests that now come first in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, then lists the exam pages on this site. The last part answers a different search that uses similar words: what "state syllabus" means for schools and how it compares with CBSE.

Who writes a state government exam syllabus

Group C and similar posts in a state are filled by its subordinate services or staff selection board: UPSSSC in Uttar Pradesh, the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB), OSSC and OSSSC in Odisha, BSSC in Bihar, WBSSC in West Bengal, HSSC in Haryana and JKSSB in Jammu and Kashmir, among others. Higher administrative posts go through the state public service commission, covered in the civil services hub.

Each board publishes the syllabus inside the recruitment advertisement or as an annexure to it. Two posts from the same board can have different papers, so always read the one attached to your post.

Common eligibility tests: Rajasthan CET and UPSSSC PET

Two big states now screen candidates through one common test, and only those who clear it can sit the main exam for a post.

The qualifying mark has been 40 percent, or 35 percent for SC and ST. UPSSSC PET gives 30 marks to data analysis built on Hindi passages, graphs and tables. Details are on the Rajasthan CET syllabus and UPSSSC PET syllabus pages.

Preparing for state exams in the right order

  1. Clear the screening test first where one exists. One good CET or PET score can be used for several posts while it remains valid.
  2. Build state GK early. Make one notebook for the state's history, rivers, districts, forts, fairs, schemes and personalities, and revise it weekly.
  3. Keep maths and reasoning daily. Thirty minutes a day keeps speed up through the long gaps between notices.
  4. Add the post paper when a notice comes. Land revenue rules for patwari, panchayat and rural schemes for VDO, typing for clerk posts.
Mahesh, a graduate in Jaipur, cleared the CET graduation level last time but just missed the patwari merit list. Since his score is still valid, he skips the CET this round and spends six weeks on Rajasthan revenue rules and computer basics for the next patwari notice.

State syllabus in schools: meaning and class 10

In schools, "state syllabus" means the curriculum of the state's own board of school education, usually prepared with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). There is no separate full form behind the phrase; when people ask for the state syllabus full form, they mean the state board syllabus.

The state syllabus for class 10 ends in that board's public exam, which goes by different names: SSLC in Karnataka and Kerala, SSC in Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and matric in Bihar. Some state boards now use NCERT textbooks for several subjects, while others write their own, so the gap with CBSE varies by state.

A map search for state syllabus schools near me throws up many names, so shortlist three and visit each school. Check that the school is affiliated to the state board, ask which textbooks it uses, and look at its class 10 board results. Families looking at state syllabus schools in Hyderabad will find them under the Telangana board, and state syllabus schools in Bangalore follow the Karnataka board.

Frequently asked questions

Is the syllabus the same for all state government exams?

No. Each state board writes its own syllabus, and even posts under one board differ. What repeats is the mix of state GK, general studies, reasoning, maths and language, so preparation for one exam helps with others in the same state.

Do I need a CET or PET score to apply for state jobs?

In Rajasthan, many Group C posts recruit only from candidates with a valid CET score, and in Uttar Pradesh many UPSSSC posts need a valid PET score. Other states mostly recruit directly. The post's advertisement says whether a score is required.

How long is a Rajasthan CET or UPSSSC PET score valid?

Recent notices give both a validity of three years from the result. These rules have changed before, so check the latest notification.

What does state syllabus full form mean?

It is not an abbreviation. State syllabus simply means the curriculum set by the state's board of school education, as opposed to CBSE or ICSE.

Can a state board student crack NEET or JEE?

Yes. NEET and JEE are built on the class 11 and 12 science content that state boards also teach. If your state books differ from NCERT, read the NCERT chapters alongside them.

Which subject decides selection in state exams?

State GK and language usually separate candidates, since most serious aspirants score well in maths and reasoning. Give the state section steady weekly time.
