The forester syllabus set by the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission comes down to one objective test: 100 questions on science and agriculture at the class 12 level, carrying 100 marks over 2 hours, with a quarter mark cut for each wrong answer. Pass that and your height and chest get measured, followed by a long endurance run: men cover 25 km and women 14 km, each inside 4 hours.
In Uttarakhand the forester is called van daroga, a field post in the Forest Department above the forest guard. The latest advertisement (number 68) offered 124 posts at pay level 5. If you are looking at the Rajasthan post instead, its paper is quite different and is covered on our vanpal syllabus page.

How selection for van daroga works
Van daroga hiring moves through four steps, and each one thins the field sharply.
- Written test: the objective paper described below. Falling below the qualifying score ends your run here.
- Physical standard test: height and chest are measured. Going by coverage of advertisement 68, a pool near double the vacancy count moves to this stage, in order of written marks.
- Physical efficiency test: the long distance run, which is qualifying in nature.
- Documents and medical: certificates, residence proof and fitness are checked.
Ranking for the final list comes from the written score alone. Where two candidates tie, the older one is reported to rank higher. So the run only decides whether you survive; the paper decides your rank.
Forester exam pattern at a glance
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Section | Science and agriculture (one combined paper) |
| Questions | 100 objective items with four options |
| Marks | 100 in total; a right answer earns 1 |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Wrong answer | Minus 0.25 |
| Level | Up to class 12 |
| Medium | Hindi and English |
UKSSSC gives no subject by subject split of the 100 questions. Treat the paper as one pool and plan your hours by how wide each topic is, not by a mark split that does not officially exist.
Forester syllabus: science topics
Three science subjects make up the core of the paper. The level sits between class 10 and class 12, so NCERT science from classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 handles almost all of it.
Physics
- Motion, force, gravitation
- Energy, work done and power; floatation and pressure in fluids
- Heat, light and sound
- Electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism
- The atmosphere
Chemistry
- Matter, its states and the particle nature of matter
- Atomic structure and the periodic classification of elements
- Acids, bases and salts; types of chemical reactions
- Metals and non metals; carbon chemistry
Biology
- Cell and tissues; diversity of living organisms
- Life processes such as nutrition, respiration, transport and excretion
- Control and coordination in plants and animals
- Reproduction, heredity and human health and disease
Agriculture, environment and maths
These parts make the paper different from a general science test, and many candidates from a pure science stream lose marks here.
- Environment: natural resources and their conservation, biodiversity, ecology, wildlife and forestry.
- Agriculture: agroforestry and silviculture, manures and fertilisers, seeds, crop production, mineral nutrition of plants, plant growth regulators, basic statistics and livestock.
- Mathematics: numbers, algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, plus statistics with probability.
Silviculture and agroforestry are the topics most tied to the job. Learn the common trees of the Himalayan belt (chir pine, deodar, oak, sal), how nurseries are raised, and why forests matter for soil and water. The syllabus used for an earlier forester advertisement also listed soil preparation, irrigation, horticulture, dairy and plant breeding, so keep a light revision of these.
Physical standards and the run
| Check | Male candidates | Female candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Height, at least | 163 cm (152 cm for ST and notified hill groups) | 150 cm (145 cm for ST and notified hill groups) |
| Chest | 5 cm expansion required | Check the notice |
| Endurance run | 25 km within 4 hours | 14 km within 4 hours |
Twenty five kilometres in four hours means a steady pace of about 6 km an hour, which is a brisk walk mixed with jogging. Most people who fail do so because they start too fast. Build up slowly: begin with 8 to 10 km and add a little each week, practising on hilly roads if you can.
Eligibility in brief
- Qualification: class 12 pass with science or agriculture from a recognised board.
- Age: general candidates must be between 18 and 28, with added years for reserved groups under Uttarakhand rules. The lower cap reflects the field nature of the job.
- State conditions: UKSSSC group C posts carry Uttarakhand residence or education conditions, and some notices ask for registration with a state employment office. Read the notice line by line.
Other states recruit foresters through their own boards with their own papers. For a wider view of field forest jobs, see the forest guard syllabus page, and for Rajasthan's guard post see vanrakshak syllabus.
An eight week plan for this paper
- Weeks 1 to 2: class 9 and 10 science NCERT, chapter by chapter, with short notes on formulas and definitions.
- Weeks 3 to 4: class 11 and 12 biology chapters on plants, ecology and environment; start the agriculture list.
- Week 5: maths, focusing on mensuration, percentage style statistics and probability, which are quick to score.
- Week 6: silviculture, agroforestry, forest types of Uttarakhand and wildlife.
- Weeks 7 to 8: timed 100 question practice sets every second day, followed by careful review of mistakes.
With a quarter mark penalty, every fourth wrong guess cancels a right one. Attempt a question when two of the four choices are clearly wrong; skip it when you cannot. Keep running three or four mornings a week through all eight weeks, since there is little time between the result and the physical test.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a GK or Hindi section in the UKSSSC forester exam?
No separate GK, Hindi or reasoning section appears in the latest pattern. The whole paper is science and agriculture up to class 12, with maths included. Check the notice in case the commission changes this.
Does the forester paper have negative marking?
Each incorrect choice costs you one quarter mark. Blank responses are simply not scored.
Can arts stream students apply for forester?
Advertisement 68 required class 12 with science or agriculture, so arts and commerce candidates are generally not eligible. Recheck this qualification line every time a fresh notice appears.
Is the 25 km run counted in the merit list?
No. The run is a pass or fail test. Your rank comes from written marks, so put the bulk of your hours into the written syllabus.
What age range does the Uttarakhand forester post allow?
Advertisement 68 set it at 18 to 28 for unreserved applicants; reserved and other notified groups are allowed a higher ceiling. Your age is reckoned as on the date that advertisement names.
Which books should I use for the forester syllabus?
NCERT science books for classes 9 to 12 cover physics, chemistry and biology. For agriculture, use the class 11 and 12 agriculture textbooks of the state board, and for maths the NCERT books up to class 10.
