India Post GDS exam pattern: why there is no paper

Many aspirants search for a GDS exam syllabus or pattern expecting a question paper. In reality the Department of Posts fills these rural posts through a merit list built by software from the online applications. There is no written test and no interview.

How a GDS application moves forward
StepWhat happens
1. Registration and applicationOne time registration, then the online form with your class 10 marks and post or division preferences
2. Merit listCandidates are ranked on class 10 marks for each post, separately by division and category
3. Document verificationShortlisted candidates bring original documents to the divisional office named in the list
4. EngagementSelected candidates complete pre engagement formalities and a short basic training

How your class 10 marks become the merit score

The marks that count are the ones on your class 10 marksheet from a recognised central, state or union territory board.

  • Marks shown: the total of compulsory and elective subjects is used. Additional or extra subjects are left out.
  • Only grades shown: each grade point is multiplied by 9.5 to convert it into marks, so a grade point of 10 becomes 95.
  • Equal scores: the older candidate is placed higher. If the date of birth is also the same, the notification gives an order of priority by category and gender, with women and transwomen of each category placed ahead of men.

Since the score is fixed by your old marksheet, enter every subject exactly as printed. A single wrong digit can push you down the list or get the application rejected at verification.

The method for grade based boards and the tie order are set afresh in each schedule. Go through the annexures of the current schedule before applying.

Skills checked in place of a written syllabus

Even without a test, the job itself expects a few abilities, and some are verified on paper.

Local language

Each postal circle names its language. In a few areas, such as some north eastern states and Goa, a local language or dialect certificate may be asked for. If you studied a different language in school, check the circle list before applying there.

Computer knowledge

Branch offices handle digital banking and booking, so basic computer use is expected. Recent schedules accept proof of this in different ways; read what the current one says.

Cycling

Deliveries in villages often mean riding a bicycle, so a declaration of this ability is part of the form.

GDS ka syllabus and duties for each post

Your daily work depends on the post you are engaged for. Knowing it helps you set the order of preferences in the form.

  • Branch Postmaster: runs the branch post office, handles savings bank and other accounts, cash, and the office's records.
  • Assistant Branch Postmaster: delivers mail, sells stamps and stationery, and supports the branch with banking work and outreach.
  • Dak Sevak: works in departmental offices handling and delivering mail.

The latest schedule listed time related continuity allowance of Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 for BPM and Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470 for ABPM and Dak Sevak, depending on working hours. These posts are not regular government service.

Ways to improve your chances

Because the merit score cannot be studied up, your choices in the form carry the weight.

  1. Read the division wise vacancy annexure and note posts reserved for your category.
  2. Apply in a division where you know the language well and where the number of posts is larger.
  3. List preferences in an order you would actually accept; refusing an offer later wastes a place.
  4. Keep originals ready: class 10 marksheet, caste or EWS certificate, PwBD certificate, and the computer and language proof the notice asks for.
  5. Watch for the merit lists, which are released in rounds; later lists often go below the first marks.
Sunita scored 88 percent in class 10 and is fluent in Odia and Hindi. She applies only to divisions in Odisha where her score clears the earlier rounds, instead of spreading her preferences over states where she would fail the language rule.

Past closing marks by state are on the India Post GDS cut off page.

Growing after engagement

A GDS can later appear in departmental examinations for posts such as Postman, Mail Guard and Multi Tasking Staff, which do have written papers. The eligibility, years of service and syllabus for those are announced separately by the department, so check the departmental notice when the time comes. If you prefer a regular central job through an open exam, look at the SSC MTS syllabus or the SSC GD syllabus, as both are open to class 10 pass candidates. Other openings for school leavers are grouped in the state exams section.
