Your BSSC inter level syllabus at the prelims stage has three equal subjects of 50 questions each: GS, a combined science and maths part, and a mental ability test, making 150 questions for 600 marks. Candidates who clear it move to a mains exam on similar subjects at more depth, and some posts then add a typing or skill test.
This recruitment, officially the Inter Level Combined Competitive Examination of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission, is one of the largest in the state, with more than 23,000 posts such as lower division clerk in the latest drive. Because the posts need only an intermediate (class 12) pass, lakhs apply, and small differences in accuracy decide the result. Here is the scheme, the full topic list, a Hindi summary and a way to use old papers.

Three steps from application to joining
- Preliminary exam: a three subject objective test that filters the field. Only those above the cut off of their category move ahead.
- Main exam: the stage that decides merit. The subjects broadly repeat those of the prelims with harder questions.
- Skill test: only for posts that call for typing or shorthand, for example a typist or a stenographer. It is checked against the speed set in the notice.
Document verification follows, and posts are allotted by merit and preference. The post wise list, with which posts need a skill test, appears in each advertisement.
BSSC inter level syllabus and pattern for prelims
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| GS (Bihar and India) | 50 | 200 |
| Science with maths | 50 | 200 |
| Mental ability test | 50 | 200 |
| All subjects | 150 | 600 |
- Time: 2 hours 15 minutes, one clock for the whole paper.
- You gain 4 for every correct response and drop 1 for every incorrect one; four bad guesses therefore wipe out a single good answer.
- The paper is objective and bilingual.
Reports of the commission's rules give minimum qualifying marks of 40 per cent for unreserved candidates, 36.5 per cent for BC, 34 per cent for EBC, and 32 per cent for SC, ST, all women and persons with disability. These are minimums only; the marks needed to actually reach mains tend to sit well above them.

What the mains adds
The mains tests the familiar ground again, at a harder level: general awareness, mathematics, science and reasoning, along with Hindi language. Reports based on the previous scheme describe two papers, but the commission sets the exact number of papers, questions and marks in its notice for each cycle, and some details of the latest mains were still to be published when this page was written.
Hindi grammar matters for mains: sandhi, samas, synonyms, opposites, muhavare and sentence correction are the usual areas. Start it alongside your prelims preparation, since it does not appear in the prelims.
Solving each BSSC inter level syllabus previous year question paper
Past papers are the nearest you will get to the real exam. They show the share of Bihar specific questions in general studies, the level of the maths and the kind of reasoning items the commission likes.
- Search the commission's own website for any question papers and answer keys it has put out, and avoid copies from unknown sources.
- Solve each paper in 2 hours 15 minutes, then mark it with +4 and minus 1 to see your real score, not just the number correct.
- Keep a list of every Bihar question you got wrong, such as districts, rivers, movements and schemes. These repeat in theme.
- Notice the questions you skipped. If you skip more than 30, you need speed work, not more theory.
A month by month plan
- Months 1 and 2: NCERT science of classes 8 to 10 and arithmetic from class 10 level books. Read Bihar's history and geography from a state level textbook.
- Month 3: daily reasoning sets, weekly current affairs revision with a Bihar focus, and start Hindi grammar for mains.
- Month 4: two full prelims papers a week, with analysis of negative marks after each.
The same commission runs graduate and lower level exams with overlapping subjects. Compare the BSSC CGL syllabus and the BSSC office attendant syllabus, see the Bihar police syllabus if you also want a uniformed job, and find other Bihar and state papers in the state exams hub.
Eligibility in brief
- Qualification: intermediate (10+2) passed from any recognised school board. Typing or shorthand skill is extra for posts that need it.
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Maximum age: 37 if you are an unreserved male, 40 if you are an unreserved female or belong to BC or EBC, and 42 for SC or ST, going by reports of the newest notice.
- Domicile: only Bihar residents can claim reserved seats; applicants from elsewhere compete as unreserved.
The commission fixes a reference date for age in every notice, and the complete relaxation table is printed there too, so open the current one on its website.

There are 150 objective questions, 50 from each of the three subjects, carrying 600 marks in total. You get 2 hours 15 minutes.
How does negative marking work in BSSC inter level?
A correct answer earns 4, and the commission deducts 1 for every error. Blank questions score zero.
Is Hindi asked in the BSSC inter level prelims?
Hindi is not a separate subject in the prelims. It is part of the mains, so begin Hindi grammar early if you expect to clear the first stage.
What is the syllabus of BSSC inter level for the mains?
It covers general awareness, maths, science, reasoning and Hindi at a deeper level than the prelims. Confirm the exact papers and marks in the commission's scheme for your cycle.
Can a 12th pass student from another state apply?
Yes, if the advertisement allows it, but they apply in the unreserved category and do not get Bihar's reservation or age relaxation. Check the domicile rules in the notice.
How much Bihar GK comes in the exam?
A good part of general studies is about Bihar, including its history, geography, economy and current events. Working through old papers tells you roughly how many state questions to plan for.
