Search for high court 4th grade syllabus and you will mostly find the Rajasthan High Court class IV drive, which tests three things in an objective paper: Hindi, English, and the culture and bolis of Rajasthan. The written test carries 85 marks over 2 hours, and those who score well are called for a 15 mark interview.
Class IV staff in a court include peons, chowkidars, sweepers and similar support roles, and the paper is pitched at class 10 level. Other high courts also hire 4th grade staff, but each one sets its own scheme, so this page explains the Rajasthan pattern in detail and tells you what to check if you are applying elsewhere.

What the 4th grade recruitment involves
In the latest Rajasthan advertisement, the court offered 5,670 class IV posts across the High Court and district courts. Selection runs in a fixed order.
- Written exam: one objective paper on an OMR sheet, worth 85 marks.
- Interview: roughly thrice as many people as there are posts, chosen by written score, face a short interview worth 15 marks.
- Document verification: your class 10 certificate, age proof, category and domicile documents are checked.
The final list adds written and interview marks out of 100. Those preparing only for Rajasthan can go deeper on the dedicated Rajasthan High Court class IV page.
Exam pattern of the written test
| Paper section | Items | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi (general) | 50 | 50 |
| General English | 10 | 10 |
| Rajasthani culture and dialects | 25 | 25 |
| Written total | 85 | 85 |
| Interview | Not applicable | 15 |
- Each question carries a single mark, and you get 2 hours.
- This drive has no penalty for errors, so answer all 85.
- The paper is set at secondary school standard.
Look at the weight: Hindi alone is more than half the paper. Strong Hindi grammar is the most direct route to a high written score, while English is only ten questions.

4th grade posts in other high courts
High courts in other states, such as Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, Patna and others, recruit their own group D or class IV staff. Their schemes are not uniform. A court may test general knowledge, basic maths or reasoning instead of local culture, and posts such as driver can carry a practical test, so never assume the Rajasthan layout applies.
If you are applying outside Rajasthan, check three things in that court's notice: the subjects and marks of the written test, whether there is negative marking, and whether an interview or skill test follows. Then build your plan on those numbers rather than on the Rajasthan table above. If you are also eyeing office posts in the Allahabad court, its RO and ARO exam guide covers that paper.
A 90 day plan for the Rajasthan paper
Three months is enough for a 10th level paper if you follow the marks.
- Month one, Hindi: study one grammar chapter daily from a school grammar book of class 9 or 10, then answer around 30 objective questions on it.
- Month two, culture: spend most evenings on Rajasthani culture. Build a chart linking each region to its boli, dress, dances and melas, because questions mix them.
- Month three, English and mocks: brush up English in 20 minute slots, and from the third week sit full 85 question tests within 2 hours on a printed bubble sheet.
In the interview, keep answers short and honest about your schooling, family, any jobs you have done and the reason a court post appeals to you. Neat clothes and a calm manner help.
