From PET to lekhpal mains: the route

Lekhpal hiring in Uttar Pradesh has a two step written route. First comes the Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET), a common screening exam the commission holds for many Group C posts. When a lekhpal advertisement opens, the commission shortlists applicants on their normalised PET score, roughly in proportion to the number of posts. Only those on that list sit the mains.

The mains paper decides who goes on to document verification, and the revenue department's selection list then rests on your mains score, applied category by category. So the UPSSSC lekhpal exam pattern really has two syllabi to prepare: the UPSSSC PET syllabus for screening and the mains syllabus explained on this page.

A right response adds one mark; a wrong one takes away a quarter. Reports of recent rounds describe a pen and paper exam where you darken bubbles on an OMR sheet.

This section split comes from reports of the latest lekhpal advertisement. The commission sometimes revises section marks between advertisements, so match the table against the syllabus annexure in your own advertisement on the UPSSSC site.

What changed from the older lekhpal paper

The lekhpal new syllabus is the biggest shift in years. Earlier lekhpal mains papers were built on four equal blocks: Hindi, mathematics, general knowledge and rural development. The latest reported pattern spreads marks across many smaller blocks instead. Mathematics as a separate block gives way to data interpretation, while computer knowledge and Uttar Pradesh general knowledge now carry 35 marks between them.

If you are studying from an old guide, this is the biggest trap. Pure arithmetic chapters matter less now, and tables, bar charts and percentage based reading of data matter more. The state portion is large enough to decide your rank on its own.

Section by section lekhpal exam syllabus

General Hindi (10)

  • Sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay
  • Tatsam and tadbhav, paryayvachi and vilom
  • Muhavare and lokoktiyan, sentence correction, punctuation
  • Official letters, office orders, notifications and circulars

Data interpretation (10)

  • Reading tables, bar and line graphs and pie charts
  • Percentages, averages and ratios drawn from given data

General studies blocks (45)

  • Indian history and the freedom struggle; polity, Panchayati Raj and local bodies
  • Landforms, people and resources of India, plus world geography basics
  • Economic planning, the role of NITI Aayog, land reforms, infrastructure
  • Rural society and development: rural schemes of the Centre and the state, rural health and welfare
  • Current events; science and technology in space, energy, defence and biotechnology
  • Environment, biodiversity, pollution and the disaster management framework (NDMA, NDRF, SDRF)

Computer and IT (15)

  • Hardware and software basics, internet and email
  • Word processing and spreadsheets, digital payments, cyber security

Uttar Pradesh general knowledge (20)

  • History, culture, art, fairs, festivals, folk dances and literature of UP
  • Rivers, forests, wildlife and natural resources of the state
  • Agriculture, industry, economy and administration of UP, state schemes and current events

Where the marks really are

Add up the table and a clear order appears. Uttar Pradesh GK (20), computer (15) and environment with disaster management (10) together give 45 marks, nearly half the paper, and these are topics where steady revision pays off quickly. Hindi and data interpretation add another 20 that reward practice rather than memory.

Arjun cleared PET with a decent score and has about ten weeks before the lekhpal mains. He gives his first hour each day to UP GK notes, district by district, then 40 minutes to computer basics and 30 minutes to two data interpretation sets. Evenings go to Hindi grammar and rotating one general studies block. Two full mocks a week on an OMR sheet keep his negative marks in check.

Rural development deserves attention beyond its five marks, because questions on schemes, land records and village administration also appear inside polity, economy and current events.

Books and notes that cover the syllabus

NCERT textbooks for history, geography and polity give a clean base for the general studies blocks. For Hindi, a school level vyakaran book handles grammar and letter writing. Build UP general knowledge from a state GK book and the state government's yearly budget and scheme announcements reported in newspapers. For computer knowledge, a beginner level computer fundamentals book with office software chapters covers most of what is asked. Keep the syllabus annexure from the advertisement as your master checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is maths still part of the lekhpal syllabus?

In the latest reported pattern there is no separate mathematics block. Number skills are tested through 10 data interpretation questions on tables and graphs. Confirm this in the syllabus annexure of your advertisement.

Can I apply for lekhpal without PET?

No. A valid UPSSSC PET score of the year named in the advertisement is required, and the commission shortlists mains candidates on that score.

What is the penalty for a wrong answer in lekhpal mains?

You lose 0.25 for each incorrect choice. Unattempted questions neither add nor subtract marks.

Lekhpal ka syllabus kya hai, in one line?

One 100 mark paper covering general Hindi, data interpretation, Indian history, polity, geography, economy, rural development, current events, science, environment, computer basics and Uttar Pradesh GK.

Is there an English version of the UP lekhpal syllabus?

The syllabus is printed in the advertisement itself, and the topics do not change with the language you read it in. Check the advertisement and the admit card instructions for the language of the question paper.

What is the qualification for UP lekhpal?

Intermediate (class 12) pass from a recognised board, a valid PET score and an age between 18 and 40 for the general category, as reported for the latest advertisement.
