Class 9 syllabus NCERT and CBSE: what you study this year

School boardsNo board exam80 + 20 marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The class 9 syllabus NCERT and CBSE follow in the latest session is built on new textbooks: Ganita Manjari for maths, Exploration for science, Understanding Society: India and Beyond for social science, and Kaveri for English, with three languages now compulsory. Main subjects still carry 80 marks of written exam and 20 marks of internal assessment.

Class 9 has no board exam, but it is the first half of secondary school, and CBSE has chosen this class to start its revised scheme. Coming from class 8, you should expect more activities, more reasoning questions and fewer pages of pure memory work.

What is new in the class 9 syllabus NCERT has released

Class 9 is the first secondary class to move to books written under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education. Reports on the new titles describe these changes:

  • Maths: Ganita Manjari, released in two parts during the session. Coordinate geometry moves to the start, and sequences and an introduction to probability enter at this level.
  • Science: Exploration, one integrated book that mixes biology, chemistry, physics and a new strand on the Earth as a system.
  • Social science: Understanding Society: India and Beyond, which replaces the four separate history, geography, political science and economics books, also in two parts.
  • English: Kaveri, which takes the place of the two older readers.
  • Hindi and Sanskrit: new readers called Ganga and Sharda.

Because Part 2 books in some subjects reach schools later in the year, your school may share its own term-wise split. Follow that split and the official curriculum PDF rather than an old chapter list from a previous year.

The three language rule in class 9

From this session, every class 9 student studies three languages, and at least two of them must be Indian languages. For students now in class 9, the third language (R3) is assessed only inside the school. CBSE has published an R3 assessment framework, and a student who does not clear R3 in class 9 is promoted but must clear it during class 10, since passing R3 is needed for the class 10 pass certificate.

Exemptions exist for children with special needs, for students in CBSE schools abroad and for some students returning from outside India. If your family moves states, you can usually keep your earlier R3 choice.

Maths and science topics

Mathematics

  • Number systems and real numbers
  • Polynomials, algebraic identities, linear equations in two variables, sequences and progressions
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Lines and angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles
  • Heron's formula, surface areas and volumes
  • Statistics and an introduction to probability

Science

  • World of living: the life science unit, which now includes new chapters on diversity and classification and on reproduction
  • Matter, its nature and behaviour: the chemistry strand
  • Motion, force, work and sound: the physics strand
  • Earth as a system: a short new unit with the lowest weight

The Exploration book has 13 chapters spread across these four units.

Topic depth and the unit-wise marks are in each subject's PDF. Our class 9 maths syllabus and class 9 science syllabus pages go chapter by chapter.

Social science and class 9th English syllabus

The new social science book blends history, geography, polity and economics around themes, so questions may ask you to connect a map, a past event and an economic idea in one answer. Map work stays part of internal assessment. See the class 9 SST syllabus for the theme list.

In English, the class 9th English syllabus pairs the Kaveri reader with grammar and writing: notice and letter formats, descriptive paragraphs, story writing, and grammar items such as tenses, modals, voice and reported speech. Reading comprehension of unseen passages stays a steady part of the written paper.

Advanced maths and science option

CBSE has announced that students starting class 9 in this session can choose a higher level of maths or science in addition to the standard course. Everyone studies the standard syllabus; the advanced level adds harder, more analytical work and is tested later as an extra paper at the class 10 stage. It is optional, and the standard result is not affected if you skip it.

The advanced option and its exam rules are being rolled out in phases. Ask your school how it is offering the option this year and read the latest CBSE circular.

A study rhythm that suits class 9

Class 9 marks feel less urgent than class 10, which is exactly why weak spots build up here. A simple weekly rhythm helps:

  • Maths four days a week, 40 minutes, solving the in-text and exercise questions of the new book before any extra practice.
  • Science three days a week, with one activity or diagram redrawn from memory each time.
  • One social science theme per week, closing with a one page summary in your own words.
  • Fifteen minutes of reading in your third language daily, since it is new for many of you.
Aarav in Jaipur found the new probability chapter confusing. He spent two weekends tossing coins and rolling dice, writing the results in a table, and the chapter's questions suddenly made sense. Small experiments like this are what the new books expect.

Where to get the official syllabus

The full curriculum PDFs for each subject are on the CBSE academic website under the secondary curriculum section, and the textbooks can be read free on the NCERT site. Compare your school's term plan with the PDF at the start of the year. For the next step, look at the CBSE class 10 syllabus, or browse the school boards hub.
