The RRB section controller syllabus is built around a single online paper of 100 questions: 60 on analytical and mathematical capability, 20 on logical capability and 20 on mental reasoning, all to be finished in 120 minutes. Candidates who do well are then called to an on screen aptitude round known as the CBAT, and the final list mixes both scores.
There is no general awareness, no general science and no separate English paper here, which surprises many people who come from NTPC preparation. The section controller in railway syllabus is narrow but deep. The weight sits heavily on numbers and data. Everything below follows the Centralised Employment Notification for section controllers, so you can plan around what is actually tested.

How selection for section controller works
A section controller sits in the control office and regulates train movement over a section, so the railways test speed with numbers, logical judgement and the mental alertness that the job demands. The recruitment has four steps.
- CBT: a single objective test. Your normalised marks here decide who moves on.
- CBAT: candidates are called community wise at eight times the vacancies, based on CBT merit. Each test battery needs a T-score no lower than 42.
- Document verification: certificates, category and age proof are checked.
- Medical exam: the A-2 standard, which is strict on eyesight.
Only candidates who clear the CBAT are ranked, and the rank uses 70 percent of the CBT score plus 30 percent of the CBAT score.
Section controller CBT exam pattern
The section controller exam pattern is simple to read but demanding to sit. Each item is worth one mark, and each mistaken response takes away one third of a mark.
| Part of the CBT | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical and Mathematical Capability | 60 | 60 |
| Logical Capability | 20 | 20 |
| Mental Reasoning | 20 | 20 |
| Total (120 minutes) | 100 | 100 |
When the paper is spread across several sessions, raw scores are normalised. To be considered at all you need a minimum percentage in the CBT:
| Community | Minimum |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 percent |
| SC, and OBC outside the creamy layer | 30 percent |
| ST | 25 percent |
For PwBD candidates a shortfall of up to 2 marks can be relaxed. Crossing this floor only makes you eligible for ranking; the CBAT call itself depends on where you stand.
RRB section controller syllabus, topic by topic
Analytical and mathematical capability (60 marks)
This block has two halves, arithmetic and data.
- Mathematics: number system, ratio and proportion, averages, percentages, profit, loss and discount, speed, distance and time, work and power, algebra, linear equations, arithmetic progression, LCM and HCF, geometry, areas and volumes, basic probability and basic statistics.
- Data analysis and interpretation: data drawn from several sources at once, tables, charts and graphs such as scatter plots, pie charts and distribution curves, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency and data arrangement.
Logical capability (20 marks)
- Logical reasoning: binary logic, syllogism, clocks and calendars, assumptions, blood relations, family trees and logic based puzzles.
- Reading comprehension: English passages on history, society, science, environment, technology, culture and abstract ideas, with questions on the main idea, supporting points, application, logical structure and style.
Mental reasoning (20 marks)
- Analogy
- Series completion
- Coding and decoding
- Ranking and arrangements
Notice that comprehension sits inside logical capability. Even without a full English paper, you still need comfortable reading speed.
The CBAT: what the aptitude test checks
The section controller CBAT exam pattern is not a knowledge test, so there is no syllabus to memorise. It is a battery of short psychological tests taken on a computer, offered in English and Hindi, with no negative marking. Reports of earlier railway aptitude tests describe short tasks on recall, obeying instructions, sustained attention, judging depth and scanning space; the notice itself confirms the qualifying rule rather than a topic list.
- You must reach 42 on the T-score scale in each battery, and no category gets a relaxation.
- One weak battery is enough to drop you, however good your CBT was.
- Candidates must bring the vision certificate format given in the notice.
Where to put your hours
Sixty percent of the CBT comes from one block, so arithmetic and data interpretation deserve most of your week. A reasonable split for daily study is about three parts maths and data, one part logical capability and one part mental reasoning.
- Inside maths, percentages, ratio, averages and time and work feed directly into data questions, so learn them first.
- Data sufficiency and multi source tables reward a careful method more than raw speed.
- Syllogism, binary logic and clock or calendar problems are quick marks once the rules are clear.
- Mental reasoning is short and scoring; ten minutes of mixed practice daily is usually enough.
With a third of a mark lost on each wrong answer, guessing on four doubtful questions can wipe out a correct one. Attempt what you can solve, not everything on screen.
A twelve week plan for the CBT
- Weeks 1 to 4: number system and percentages first, then ratio, averages, simple equations and profit and loss. Start reading one English editorial a day.
- Weeks 5 to 7: work and time, distance and speed problems, progression, geometry, mensuration, basic probability and statistics. Begin tables and bar charts.
- Weeks 8 and 9: mixed data interpretation, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency and data arrangement, plus syllogism and binary logic.
- Weeks 10 and 11: puzzles, blood relations, coding, ranking and analogies. Two full mocks a week.
- Week 12: revision of formulas and error notes only, and light practice of attention and memory tasks.
School level NCERT mathematics up to class 10 covers almost every arithmetic and geometry topic listed. Add a standard book of reasoning and a book of data interpretation sets in general terms, and work from the official topic list rather than a long generic railway syllabus.
RRB section controller syllabus in Hindi
If you searched for section controller ka syllabus, here is the short version in Hindi.
Eligibility and medical points to check early
You need a university degree in any discipline, already completed by the last date. If your final year result is still pending then, you cannot apply. Your age must fall between 20 and 33, with the usual relaxations such as 3 years for OBC (non creamy layer), 5 years for SC and ST and 10 years for PwBD in the unreserved and EWS group. Every relaxation is listed on the section controller eligibility page.
The A-2 medical standard asks for 6/9 vision for distance in both eyes and N6 for near vision, both without glasses, along with colour, binocular, night and myopic vision tests. Anyone with past LASIK or any other refractive surgery cannot be appointed. Get your eyes checked before you invest months in study. Past marks needed for selection are discussed on the section controller cut off page, and other railway papers are on the railway exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
Is there general awareness in the RRB section controller exam?
No. The CBT has only three parts: analytical and mathematical capability, logical capability and mental reasoning. Unlike RRB NTPC, there is no general awareness or general science section.
What does a wrong answer cost in this exam?
Every incorrect CBT answer reduces your score by a third of a mark. Skipped items carry no penalty. The CBAT has no negative marking.
Is the CBAT only qualifying, or does it add to my rank?
Yes. The final list uses 70 percent weight for the CBT and 30 percent for the CBAT, and only candidates who reach a T-score of 42 in every battery are ranked.
How much must I score in the CBT just to qualify?
UR and EWS candidates need 40 percent, SC and OBC (non creamy layer) candidates need 30 percent, and ST candidates need 25 percent. A shortfall of up to 2 marks can be relaxed for PwBD candidates.
Can I wear glasses and still become a section controller?
The A-2 standard requires 6/9 distance vision in each eye and N6 near vision without glasses, and refractive surgery makes you ineligible. Confirm the exact medical rules in the latest official notification.
Is English tested in the section controller exam?
Not as a separate paper, but reading comprehension passages in English form part of logical capability. Regular reading of long articles helps you handle them within time.
