MPPSC Syllabus for the State Service Exam

Civil servicesGraduate levelMP state serviceUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The MPPSC syllabus for the State Service Examination has three layers: a screening round in prelims where General Studies ranks you and an aptitude test merely has to be cleared, a descriptive mains of six papers, and an interview. Madhya Pradesh runs through all of it, from the state's dynasties and tribes to its rivers, economy and administration.

This page lays out the papers, the units in each, what the Commission changed in the recent scheme, plus a calendar that makes sure state topics get the time they deserve.

How the MPPSC exam pattern moves you to selection

You climb three steps. The prelims works as a filter: Paper I (General Studies) decides who goes to mains, while Paper II (General Aptitude Test) only needs to be passed. Nothing you score in prelims reaches the final merit list.

The mains is where rank is built. Its six descriptive papers, together with the interview, form the merit list. Uniformed posts such as DSP also need the physical standards set in the notification.

The Commission revised its scheme of examination for the latest cycle. Marks per paper and some timings do not match across published summaries, so treat the official notification and syllabus document on mppsc.mp.gov.in as what actually binds you.

II: General Aptitude Test1003002 hoursQualifying only

Under the revised scheme a question carries 3 marks and an incorrect choice pulls 1 mark back. Negative marking is new for this exam; earlier cycles had none and gave 2 marks per question, which is why older guides still show 200 marks a paper.

Paper I units

  1. History of India, including ancient knowledge traditions and the freedom movement
  2. History, culture and literature of Madhya Pradesh
  3. Geography of India
  4. Geography of Madhya Pradesh: rivers, forests, soils, minerals, energy
  5. Constitution and governance of India and of the state, including Panchayati Raj
  6. Economy of India and of Madhya Pradesh
  7. Science, environment and health
  8. International, national and state current affairs
  9. Information and communication technology
  10. Tribes of Madhya Pradesh: heritage, folk culture, dialects and literature

Paper II units

Comprehension, talking and working with people, reasoning puzzles and analysis, picking the sensible step when a situation is messy, mental ability, class 10 level numeracy with simple data reading, and Hindi comprehension at class 10 level.

  • GS I: the story of India across its ancient, medieval and modern periods, the dynasties and freedom struggle of the state, Indian and world geography, water and disaster management, geography of Madhya Pradesh.
  • GS II and GS III: constitutional framework, political system, administration of the state; sociology and the social sector (education, health, welfare schemes); the Indian and state economy; and science, technology, computers and environment. The exact part wise split between these two papers is printed in the official syllabus.
  • GS IV: ethics and philosophy, thinkers and reformers, integrity, emotional intelligence, case studies, and in the revised scheme a management section.
  • General Hindi: sandhi, samas, alankar, ras, chhand, idioms, translation between Hindi and English, summary and expansion of ideas.
  • Essay and drafting: an essay plus official formats such as letters, circulars, notifications and reports.

Each General Studies paper is reported to have two parts, and you must attempt both. A minimum mark in each mains paper (reported as 40 percent for unreserved and 30 percent for reserved candidates) also applies.

What changed in the MPPSC new syllabus

  • Negative marking arrived in prelims, so guessing now has a cost.
  • Prelims weight per question rose from 2 to 3 marks in the revised scheme.
  • Interview marks have been reported as 175 in older cycles and 185 more recently.
  • Prelims cut off stays sealed until the whole selection ends, so you cannot benchmark yourself against it straight away.

The topic units themselves stayed broadly the same, so older notes still help. Check the GS IV and interview marks against the latest notice before you plan answer practice.

Where to spend your hours

Analyses of recent prelims papers put Madhya Pradesh specific questions (state geography, tribes, culture, economy and schemes) at roughly a third of Paper I, with current affairs the next largest block. That tells you two things: national static topics alone will not carry you, and state material needs its own notebook.

Arjun works in Bhopal and has eight months before prelims. He gives weekday mornings to one national subject and evenings to the matching state chapter, for example Indian rivers then the Narmada, Chambal and Betwa basins. Saturdays go to one full Paper I mock and Sundays to the state budget, economic survey and current events. From the fourth month he adds a weekly aptitude paper so Paper II never surprises him.

For mains, start writing early. Three 15 mark answers a day in Hindi or English, plus one Hindi grammar set a week, build the speed the six papers demand.

Books and study material

Lay the national base with NCERT textbooks across the social sciences and science; they cover most of the national base. For the state, use the Madhya Pradesh government's own publications, such as the state economic survey and budget documents, plus a reliable state general knowledge book. Keep the official syllabus document printed beside you and tick units off as you finish them. For General Hindi, a standard grammar book used at the class 11 and 12 level is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total count of MPPSC papers?

Two in prelims and six in mains, followed by an interview. Prelims has General Studies and the General Aptitude Test; mains has four General Studies papers, General Hindi and a Hindi essay paper.

Does MPPSC prelims punish wrong guesses?

Yes. The revised scheme deducts 1 mark, a third of the 3 on offer, whenever your chosen option is wrong. A blank bubble is safe. Earlier cycles had no negative marking.

Is the MPPSC pre syllabus different from mains?

The subjects overlap, but prelims tests facts through objective questions while mains asks you to explain, analyse and write in a set word limit. Mains also adds ethics, management, General Hindi and essay writing.

Are my prelims scores carried into the final list?

No. Paper I marks only decide who qualifies for mains, and Paper II has to be passed. Rank is worked out from mains together with the personality test.

Can I write mains in English?

All four GS papers may be answered in either Hindi or English. The General Hindi and Hindi essay papers have to be written in Hindi, so non Hindi medium aspirants should practise them early.

Which age band applies to State Service candidates?

For the latest cycle it is 21 to 40 years for most posts, with a lower upper limit for uniformed posts and relaxation for eligible Madhya Pradesh domicile categories. The reference date for age and every relaxation are printed in the notification.
