RRB PO syllabus for IBPS Officer Scale I

BankingGraduateAge 18 to 30Updated 26 Oct 2026

The RRB PO syllabus for IBPS Officer Scale I has a prelims of just two subjects, reasoning and quantitative aptitude, worth 80 marks in 45 minutes, and a 200 mark mains of five sections, where GA, computers and a language paper of your choice (English or Hindi) join the two core subjects. Shortlisted candidates then face a 100 mark interview.

Regional Rural Banks hire these officers to run branches in small towns and villages, so the GA section leans on rural banking, agriculture and government schemes. That one detail separates this exam from other bank PO tests and should shape your current affairs notes from the start.

How Officer Scale I selection is staged

The process has three steps. Prelims simply filters the crowd for mains. Your mains score earns the interview call, and merit is then built from mains and interview weighted 80 and 20. Allotment to a particular RRB depends on your merit, your preference and the state you applied for.

You apply for one state, and you are expected to know the official language of that state. If you studied it in school up to class 8 or above, that usually satisfies the rule; otherwise the bank may give you time after joining to learn it. Check the language clause printed for your state in the notice.

RRB PO prelims exam pattern

SectionQuestionsMarks
Reasoning4040
Quantitative Aptitude4040
Total8080

All 80 items must be done within 45 minutes, which leaves you barely half a minute per question. You need to clear the cut off in each section as well as the overall cut off, so one strong subject cannot rescue a weak one. Guessing wrongly here docks 0.25 of a mark per item.

Reasoning4050
Quantitative Aptitude4050
General Awareness4040
English Language or Hindi Language4040
Computer Knowledge4020

You attempt either the English or the Hindi language section, not both. The full mains lasts 2 hours. With 50 marks apiece, reasoning and quant still form half of mains, while the 40 computer questions are worth only half a mark apiece.

Sectional timing, minimum marks in the interview and the categories that get relaxed qualifying marks can change between cycles. Confirm them in the latest official notification on the IBPS website.

Reasoning and quant topics

Reasoning

  • Seating arrangement: linear, circular and box based puzzles
  • Floor and scheduling puzzles
  • Syllogism, inequality, blood relation, direction
  • Coding decoding, ranking puzzles, letter and digit series
  • Mains only: data sufficiency, input output, statement based logic

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Simplification and approximation (prelims heavy)
  • Series with a missing term or an odd term
  • Comparing roots of two quadratics
  • DI sets in table, bar, pie or caselet form
  • Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, ratio, averages, ages, SI and CI, time and work, motion problems on trains and streams, mixtures, mensuration, probability
  • Mains only: data sufficiency and harder caselet DI

Both prelims sections are the same subjects you meet in mains, at a lower difficulty, so preparation carries forward without waste.

General awareness, computer and language sections

General Awareness

  • News of roughly the past six months from India and the world
  • Banking: RBI, monetary policy terms, types of banks, NABARD and the RRB structure
  • Rural and agricultural economy: priority sector lending, crop insurance, Kisan Credit Card, self help groups
  • Government schemes, budget highlights, financial inclusion
  • Static GK: headquarters, currencies, important days

Computer Knowledge

  • Hardware, software, memory and input output devices
  • Operating systems, MS Office basics, shortcut keys
  • Internet, networking, email and cyber security terms

English or Hindi Language

English questions come as passages, cloze items, error detection, word fillers and jumbled sentences. The Hindi section tests the same skills in Hindi: gadyansh, rikt sthan, vakya shuddhi, paryayvachi and vilom shabd, and muhavare. Pick Hindi only if your Hindi grammar is genuinely stronger, because you decide once and cannot switch midway.

Where your marks come from

Reports from recent prelims show puzzles taking up most of the reasoning section and DI plus arithmetic dominating quant. In mains, GA is often called the deciding section, because someone who reads the news daily can clear it quickly and save minutes for reasoning puzzles. Focus in this order:

  1. Puzzles and seating arrangement
  2. Data interpretation and arithmetic
  3. Banking and rural economy awareness
  4. Language section accuracy
  5. Computer basics, which reward short daily revision
Rakesh in Patna had four months and a weak English base. He chose the Hindi section for mains, practised one gadyansh and ten vakya shuddhi items daily, and moved English study time into DI. His language score went up and his quant stopped being the section that dragged him down.

Because RRB clerk (Office Assistant) prelims uses the same two subjects, many candidates write both; compare the IBPS RRB clerk syllabus. The nationalised bank officer exam has a similar mains but adds a descriptive paper, as the IBPS PO syllabus explains. To judge the scores you need, check the RRB PO cut off, and practise with the RRB PO previous year papers. All banking exams are listed in our bank exams hub.
