SSC GD Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Constable (GD)

SSC and central10th passCAPF constableUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The SSC GD syllabus covers one computer based test with four equal parts: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi, each with 20 questions worth 40 marks. The whole paper is 80 questions for 160 marks, and you get 60 minutes.

The written test is only the first gate. After it you face a running test and body measurements, then a medical exam and document check. This guide sets out the paper, each topic SSC names under every part, and a weekly routine shaped around equal section weights, so your hours go where marks sit.

How the constable selection is staged

Staff Selection Commission recruits General Duty constables for the Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal and the Secretariat Security Force, plus Riflemen for Assam Rifles. Every candidate goes through the same ladder.

  1. Computer based examination: the only paper with a syllabus, and the stage that decides your merit position.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): a timed run, qualifying in nature.
  3. Physical Standard Test (PST): height, and chest for men, checked against the standard for your category and region.
  4. Detailed medical examination and document verification.

Since the final list follows CBT marks (with any NCC bonus added), the written paper should get the biggest share of your study hours, while your running practice should run alongside it from day one. Full physical standards are on our SSC GD eligibility page.

  • Time: 60 minutes for the whole paper.
  • A right response adds 2 marks; a wrong one takes away 0.25 marks. Skipped questions cost nothing.
  • Questions are objective, multiple choice. The paper is set in Hindi and English and, in recent cycles, in several regional languages too; pick yours while filling the form.
  • Shift wise scores are normalised, so your final score may differ slightly from your raw score.
SSC can revise the scheme between cycles. Always compare this table with the scheme in the current SSC GD notice on ssc.gov.in.

Reasoning syllabus for SSC GD (Part A)

The reasoning part checks how you spot patterns and relationships, both with words and with figures. SSC lists these areas:

  • Analogies, similarities and differences
  • Spatial visualisation, spatial orientation and visual memory
  • Discrimination and observation
  • Relationship concepts and blood relations
  • Arithmetical reasoning and figural classification
  • Arithmetic number series and figure (non verbal) series
  • Letter and number coding
  • Analytical aptitude and ability to observe patterns

Most questions are short. Paper folding, mirror images and embedded figures appear often under the non verbal heading, so keep a practice set of figures and not only number series.

GK and General Awareness topics (Part B)

This part tests awareness of the world around you and of India in particular. The official list is broad:

  • Current happenings in India and abroad
  • Sports and games, awards and important days
  • History of India, with stress on the freedom struggle and culture
  • Indian and world geography
  • Economic scene of the country
  • General polity and the Indian Constitution
  • Scientific research and everyday science
  • India and its neighbouring countries

School level NCERT books from class 6 to 10 for history, geography, civics and science cover most static questions. For current affairs, read a daily newspaper and keep one page of notes per month.

SSC GD maths syllabus (Part C)

The SSC GD math syllabus stays at the level of class 10 arithmetic. Questions test speed with numbers more than tricky concepts.

  • Number systems and computation of whole numbers
  • Decimals and fractions, and how numbers relate to each other
  • Basic arithmetic operations and simplification
  • Percentages, ratio and proportion
  • Averages
  • Simple interest and compound interest
  • Profit, loss and discount
  • Mensuration of basic figures
  • Speed, time and distance; work and time

Learn tables up to 20, squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15. This alone saves several seconds on almost every maths question.

English or Hindi part (Part D)

You attempt this part in English or in Hindi, as you choose. SSC describes it simply as the ability to understand basic English or Hindi and basic comprehension. In practice the SSC GD English syllabus includes:

  • Spotting errors and sentence improvement
  • Blanks to complete with a suitable word or preposition
  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Phrases and idioms, and a single word for a group of words
  • Spelling and active or passive voice
  • A short reading passage with questions

If you choose Hindi, expect the same skills: संधि, समास, पर्यायवाची, विलोम, मुहावरे, वाक्य शुद्धि and a short गद्यांश.

SSC GD syllabus in Hindi

Many aspirants search for the ssc gd ka syllabus or the ssc gd hindi syllabus. The GD outline below is written in simple Hindi.

Where the marks are and how to plan your weeks

All four parts carry the same 40 marks, so no part can be dropped. Reasoning and the language part are usually the quickest to push towards full marks, because their question types are short and predictable. GK is the part where most candidates lose marks, since its range is wide.

A simple 12 week plan works for most people:

  • Weeks 1 to 4: maths basics and reasoning types, one hour each daily; start GK with static history and polity.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: full topic coverage, 20 question sectional tests every second day, and current affairs notes.
  • Weeks 9 to 12: one full 60 minute test daily, then a careful review of every wrong answer.
Ramesh, from a village near Jhansi, studies after his farm work and runs at dawn. He kept maths and reasoning for the evening, when he was fresh, and read GK notes during his lunch break. Running 3 km every morning from the first week meant the 5 km PET did not scare him when the CBT result came.

Real shift papers are covered in our GD past papers guide, and the scores recent toppers needed are on the constable cut off page.

Study material that is enough

You do not need a shelf of books. For the GK base, use NCERT school textbooks (classes 6 to 10) in science, history, geography and civics. One standard arithmetic practice book and one reasoning book, both at the 10th level, cover Parts A and C. For English, a basic grammar book and daily reading of a newspaper editorial help with vocabulary.

Print the syllabus page of the notice, pin it near your study table, and strike out GD topics as you complete them. Weighing other jobs open to 10th pass candidates? Compare this paper with the SSC MTS syllabus and the wider list on our SSC exams hub.
