RSSB lab assistant (science): a GK paper and a physics, chemistry, biology paper

Lab assistant science syllabus and paper pattern

State examsClass 12 scienceRajasthan jobsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The lab assistant science syllabus for the Rajasthan recruitment has two objective papers: Paper 1 testing Rajasthan GK with India and world affairs, and Paper 2 testing science, split into physics, chemistry and biology at roughly senior secondary level. Both papers carry 100 questions for 200 marks over two hours apiece, and wrong answers carry a negative mark.

The same science exam serves the Laboratory Assistant and Junior Laboratory Assistant (Science) posts that the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board fills in schools, the forensic science laboratory, public health engineering and other departments. Here you get the marks, every science topic named in the syllabus and a week by week order of study.

How selection works for science lab posts

You sit both papers, normally on the same day in two sittings, and then attend document verification if your marks place you in the merit list. No interview, practical exam or skill test is held. Your combined marks out of 400 decide your rank, subject to category reservation and whatever pass threshold the Board notifies.

The latest advertisement covered 804 posts across lab streams. The largest single block was Laboratory Assistant Grade III in secondary education schools, with smaller numbers in agriculture, Sanskrit education, the State Forensic Science Laboratory and public health engineering. Geography lab posts in colleges were advertised alongside but take a separate geography paper, explained on the lab assistant geography syllabus page.

Lab assistant syllabus science: paper pattern

RSSB Laboratory Assistant (Science) written exam
PaperAreas testedQuestionsMarksTime
Paper 1Rajasthan history, culture, geography, current affairs; India and world GK; educational psychology1002002 hours
Paper 2Science: physics, chemistry, biology1002002 hours
Total2004004 hours

With two marks riding on each question and a penalty for every wrong choice, careless guessing hurts. On a 120 minute paper each item gets about 72 seconds, enough for recall items and leaves time for the few numerical physics and chemistry questions.

Reports disagree on the minimum qualifying percentage for each category, and the Board sets the exact negative marking rule in the advertisement. Read both in the current RSSB notice before you plan around them.

Paper 1: what the general knowledge paper covers

  • Rajasthan's past, arts and traditions: early sites and sources, ruling dynasties, Rajput and Mughal ties, forts and temples, saints and folk gods, painting schools, handicrafts, fairs and folk music, the 1857 uprising, farmer and tribal movements, Prajamandal activity and how the princely states were unified.
  • Rajasthan geography: relief, the Aravallis, the Thar, plateaus, drainage and lakes, seasons, the main soil groups, forests and wildlife, crops, livestock, canals and dams, minerals and transport.
  • Current affairs of Rajasthan: state schemes, events and appointments.
  • General knowledge of India and the world.
  • Basics of educational psychology: a small share on learning, development and motivation.

This paper is identical in scope to the one taken by geography candidates, so any Rajasthan GK notes you build serve both streams.

Paper 2 physics topics

  • Rigid body dynamics: moment of inertia, conservation of linear and angular momentum
  • Thermodynamics: first and second laws, heat engines and refrigerators
  • Oscillations: simple harmonic motion with examples, forced and resonant vibrations
  • Waves: principle of superposition, Doppler effect
  • Electrostatics: Coulomb's law, electric field, Gauss's theorem and its uses
  • Current electricity: Kirchhoff's laws, Wheatstone bridge, meter bridge, potentiometer
  • Optics: microscope and telescope, interference, diffraction, polarisation, the polarimeter
  • Atoms and nuclei: hydrogen atom on the Bohr picture, nuclear mass defect and binding energy, splitting and joining of nuclei
  • Semiconductor electronics: p n junction, diode as rectifier, Zener diode, transistor, logic gates

Notice how many items are lab instruments: meter bridge, potentiometer, polarimeter, microscope. Questions on what each instrument measures and how it is balanced or read are a natural fit for a lab post, so learn the working of each one alongside the theory.

Paper 2 chemistry topics

  • Atomic structure: fundamental particles, Rutherford model, quantum numbers, Pauli exclusion principle, Aufbau rule, Hund's rule, shapes of orbitals
  • Modern periodic table and trends in atomic size, ionisation energy, electron affinity and electronegativity
  • Elements of the s and p blocks
  • Chemical equilibrium and ionic equilibrium
  • States of matter: gases, liquids and solids, and solutions
  • Organic chemistry: nomenclature, general properties and hydrocarbons

Chemistry is the shortest of the three lists, which makes it the quickest to finish. Equilibrium and solutions bring numerical items such as pH, concentration and gas law calculations, so practise a few each day rather than leaving them till the end.

Paper 2 biology topics

Botany side

  • Plant groups: algae, fungi, lichens, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms
  • External form and internal structure of angiosperms
  • Plant physiology: osmosis, water absorption, ascent of sap, transpiration, photosynthesis, respiration, growth and movement
  • Economic importance of plants

Zoology and general biology

  • The cell: cell theory, bacterial versus nucleated cells, mitosis and meiosis
  • Genetics: Mendel's laws, structure of DNA and RNA
  • Classification of animals and their economic importance
  • Human physiology: digestion, respiration, excretion, circulation, endocrine glands, nervous system with brain, eye and ear, muscles, reproduction, common diseases
  • Ecology: ecosystem structure and types, energy flow, nutrient cycles, adaptation, pollution, populations, biodiversity
  • Biotechnology: recombinant DNA, transgenic organisms, uses in farming and medicine, ethical issues
  • Organic evolution

Biology is the longest block in the science paper. Candidates from a maths stream background usually need the most time here, so start it early.

Planning around the lab assistant science syllabus

A ten to twelve week plan works for most candidates who passed class 12 with science.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: biology first, one system or plant topic a day, with diagrams.
  2. Weeks 5 to 7: physics, giving a full day each to current electricity, optics and semiconductors since those carry the instrument questions.
  3. Weeks 8 and 9: chemistry, with daily numericals on equilibrium and solutions.
  4. Throughout: 45 minutes of Rajasthan GK every evening, rotating history, geography and current affairs.
  5. Last three weeks: full papers of 100 questions in two hours, one GK and one science paper on the same day, to copy exam conditions.

Manish took PCM in class 12 and has not opened a biology book since class 10. He gives biology five weeks instead of four, works through the NCERT biology textbooks for classes 11 and 12 chapter by chapter, and draws each human organ system on a single page. In mocks his biology accuracy climbs from about half to above 70 percent, and he stops guessing on the rest.

Books and official sources

NCERT physics, chemistry and biology books for classes 11 and 12 match most of Paper 2, and the class 12 lab manuals help with instrument based questions. For Paper 1, the Rajasthan Board school books on the state's history, culture and geography, plus a monthly state current affairs digest, are enough. Print the syllabus from the RSSB advertisement and strike off each line as you finish it.

All lab streams of the state are compared in our overview of Rajasthan lab posts. Other Board exams are listed on the RSMSSB syllabus page and our state exams hub. When school science feels rusty, our CBSE class 12 physics syllabus page lists the chapters this paper borrows from.

Frequently asked questions

What level is the science paper set at?

Most topics match the class 11 and 12 science courses, with some general science at a simpler level. A candidate who studied physics, chemistry and biology in senior secondary school will recognise nearly every line of the list.

Is the same syllabus used for Junior Laboratory Assistant?

Yes. Reports on the latest recruitment place Laboratory Assistant and Junior Laboratory Assistant (Science) under one science exam with the same two papers. Check the advertisement in case a future notice separates them.

Can a maths stream student apply?

Reports describe the requirement as class 12 with science, and posts in different departments may list different subject rules. Read the post wise qualification table in the RSSB advertisement before applying.

How many marks is each question worth?

Because a 100 question paper carries 200 marks, every item is worth two. A wrong answer attracts negative marking, so attempt only those you can narrow down.

Is there an interview or practical test?

No. Selection depends on the two written papers and document verification. There is no practical or interview round in the latest scheme.

Which syllabus document should I trust?

The Rajasthan Staff Selection Board publishes the syllabus with the advertisement on its website. Use that document as your checklist, since it is the version the paper setters follow.
