The GIC lecturer syllabus set by UPPSC has two layers: a common general studies portion that every applicant studies, and a much larger subject portion at postgraduate level in the subject you teach, such as English, Hindi, Mathematics or Biology. The prelims paper gives 40 questions to general studies and 80 to your subject, and the mains is a written test of General Hindi with an essay plus a long subject paper.
These posts are lecturer (pravakta) jobs in Government Inter Colleges of Uttar Pradesh, teaching Classes 11 and 12, so the commission expects real command over your subject. This page sets out the GIC lecturer exam pattern of each stage, the general studies list, the GIC lecturer English syllabus in detail, and a study plan shaped by the fact that two thirds of the prelims marks come from one subject.

How the GIC lecturer selection works
UPPSC fills these posts through a screening prelims followed by a descriptive mains. Recent recruitment covered lecturer posts in boys' and girls' Government Inter Colleges and a small number of special college posts, all advertised subject wise, so you apply for and write the paper of one subject only.
- Prelims: an objective OMR paper. It only shortlists candidates for the mains.
- Mains: two written papers, and the merit list is built mainly on these marks.
- Document verification: degrees, B.Ed where required, category and domicile papers.
Reports on the latest round differ on whether any interview follows the mains. Read the selection clause in the current UPPSC advertisement for your subject before you plan around it.
GIC lecturer exam pattern: prelims and mains
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General studies | 40 | 100 |
| Your subject | 80 | 200 |
| Total (2 hours) | 120 | 300 |
Every item carries 2.5 marks; get one wrong and you lose a third of that value. Blank answers cost nothing.
| Paper | Covers | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | General Hindi (50) and an essay (50) | 100 | 2 hours |
| Paper 2 | Subject paper with long, short and very short answers | 300 | 3 hours |
The subject paper in recent schemes carries about 20 questions spread across these answer lengths, and the essay is a single topic of roughly a thousand words.
GIC lecturer syllabus for general studies
Forty questions sound small, but at 2.5 marks each they decide 100 marks, which is often the gap between candidates with the same subject score. The listed areas are:
- Current national and international events
- Indian history, the freedom struggle and cultural heritage
- Physical and economic geography, environment and ecology
- Indian polity, Constitution and governance
- Indian economy and social development
- General science and technology
- Logical reasoning, numeracy and elementary mathematics
- Uttar Pradesh specific awareness: education, agriculture, industry, trade, culture and social traditions of the state
Uttar Pradesh questions repay focused notes: districts and divisions, major rivers, folk forms, fairs, schemes of the state government and the school education structure.
GIC lecturer English syllabus
For English lecturers, the 80 subject questions in the prelims and the whole of mains Paper 2 come from literature and language at master's level.

Other subjects and what their papers expect
UPPSC advertises lecturer posts in many subjects, among them Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Commerce, Civics, Geography, Sociology, Education and Home Science. The exact subject list changes with vacancies in each round. In every subject the content runs from the Class 11 and 12 textbook level up to the core papers of a postgraduate course, so a Chemistry candidate, for example, must handle physical, organic and inorganic chemistry at MSc depth, while a Hindi candidate covers the full history of Hindi literature along with grammar and poetics.
If you have only a bachelor's level hold on parts of your subject, list those units first and close the gap early.
Where to put your hours
UPPSC does not publish a unit wise split for the subject part, so let the marks guide you. Your subject decides 200 out of 300 marks at the screening stage and 300 out of 400 in the written mains. That means roughly three of every four study hours belong to your subject, with general studies and Hindi sharing the rest.
Shalini, who holds a private school job in Prayagraj, completed a master's in English literature. In her first mock she scored well on Romantic and Victorian poets but lost marks on criticism and on Indian writing in English. She now gives two evenings a week to critics and terms, one to Indian authors, and sits a complete 120 question paper under a timer every Sunday.
- Months 1 to 3: cover the full subject once, building one page summaries per author or unit.
- Month 4: general studies, especially Uttar Pradesh facts and current events, plus two Hindi grammar sessions a week.
- Month 5: timed prelims practice with strict control over guessing, since one third negative marking punishes blind attempts.
- After prelims: answer writing for the subject paper and one essay a week.
Books and official sources
Your postgraduate course readers and standard histories of your subject's literature or theory form the base. On the general studies side, school NCERT books from Class 6 upward build the base in the humanities and science, and a recent yearbook of Uttar Pradesh facts handles the state part. For Hindi in mains Paper 1, revise sandhi, samas, muhavare, paryayvachi and essay structure.

Frequently asked questions
Will a wrong guess reduce my GIC lecturer prelims score?
Yes. A wrong response costs one third of the 2.5 marks on that item. Unanswered questions score zero, so skip items you cannot narrow down.
Is the general studies paper the same for every subject?
Yes. All candidates answer the same 40 general studies questions. Only the 80 subject questions change with the post you applied for.
What is in mains Paper 1?
Half of its 100 marks go to General Hindi and half to one essay, and you get 2 hours for both. The Hindi part tests grammar and usage, while the essay checks how well you organise ideas on one topic.
Do I need B.Ed for a GIC lecturer post?
A postgraduate degree in the subject is the core requirement, and B.Ed is generally asked for, but the rules differ by subject and post. The subject wise eligibility chart in the current UPPSC advertisement is the final word.
How is GIC lecturer different from UP PGT?
GIC lecturer posts are in government inter colleges and are filled by UPPSC. PGT posts in aided schools are filled through a different board with its own syllabus and pattern, so prepare from the advertisement of the exam you actually apply for.
What age limit applies?
For the unreserved category, the most recent round allowed ages 21 to 40. Reserved groups and disabled applicants receive extra years under state rules, and each advertisement fixes the reference day on which age is counted.
