The ras syllabus covers three stages of the Rajasthan State and Subordinate Services Combined Competitive Exam run by RPSC: a single objective prelims paper on General Knowledge and General Science, four descriptive mains papers (three General Studies papers and one on General Hindi and General English), and an interview. Rajasthan's own history, geography, economy, polity and culture run through every stage.
Prelims only screens you for the mains; your final rank comes from mains and interview marks. Below you get the pattern, the topic list paper by paper, and a plan that makes use of how much prelims and mains share. To see what scores have taken people through each stage, read the RAS cut off page.

RAS exam pattern at each stage
| Stage | Paper | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelims (objective) | General Knowledge and General Science, 150 questions | 200 | 3 hours |
| Mains (descriptive) | Paper I: General Studies I | 200 | 3 hours |
| Paper II: General Studies II | 200 | 3 hours | |
| Paper III: General Studies III | 200 | 3 hours | |
| Paper IV: General Hindi and General English | 200 | 3 hours | |
| Interview | Personality and viva voce | 100 | Not fixed |
Your prelims score never enters the final total. Mains (800) and interview (100) together decide your rank and the service you get. Each incorrect prelims response loses a third of the marks it carries, and the commission's OMR rules require you to mark an option for every question, including the fifth option for leaving it unattempted. Recent instructions warn that a sheet where over one tenth of the items stay completely blank may be rejected.

Prelims and mains overlap: plan for both together
Nearly every prelims area appears again in mains, only in written form. So prepare each topic for both levels at once: learn the facts for objective questions, then write a 50 to 100 word answer on the same topic.
- Rajasthan first. State history, culture, geography, economy and polity carry weight at every stage, including the interview.
- Mains only areas need early attention. Sociology, management, accounting, administrative ethics, behaviour, sports and yoga, and law have no or little prelims presence; start them right after prelims at the latest.
- Paper IV is scoring. Hindi and English grammar is finite and rewards steady practice.
A ten month timeline
- Months 1 to 3: Rajasthan history and culture, Indian polity, geography of India and Rajasthan, NCERT basics.
- Months 4 and 5: economy, science and technology, reasoning, current affairs; start answer writing three times a week.
- Month 6: prelims revision and full mock tests under the negative marking rule.
- Months 7 to 9: mains only subjects, Paper IV practice, timed writing of full papers.
- Month 10: mains revision and practice on Rajasthan related current issues for the interview. Aspirants also weighing other state level exams can browse the civil services hub or the Rajasthan CET syllabus.
Books in general terms
NCERT texts (classes 6 to 12) lay the national base in every GS area, while Rajasthan board school books help with the state's past and its land. Add a standard Rajasthan general knowledge reference, the economic review and budget documents of the state government, a basic text each on management and accounting, and a Hindi grammar book. Frequently asked questions
How is the RAS prelims paper set?
A single objective GK and science paper: 150 questions, 200 marks, three hours. Every mistake takes away a third of that item's value, and the paper only decides who reaches mains.
What papers make up RAS mains?
Four descriptive papers of 200 marks each: General Studies I, II and III, and General Hindi with General English. Each paper lasts three hours.
Is Rajasthan GK necessary for RAS?
Yes. Rajasthan's history, culture, geography, economy and administration appear in prelims, mains and the interview, and they often decide close ranks.
Who is eligible to apply for RAS?
Any graduate aged 21 to 40 on the date RPSC fixes can apply, with relaxations for reserved categories and women of Rajasthan as per state rules. Check the latest advertisement for the exact reference date.
Can I write RAS mains in Hindi?
Yes. Candidates can answer the General Studies papers in Hindi or English. The language parts of Paper IV must be written in that language.
How is the RAS syllabus different from the RPSC syllabus for other posts?
RAS is a combined exam for state administrative and subordinate services, with a full mains and interview. Other RPSC recruitments, listed on the RPSC syllabus page, often have a single written test on subject knowledge.
