The cpct syllabus is split between a 75 question objective section on computer knowledge, IT skills, reading comprehension, maths, reasoning and general awareness, followed by a typing test in English as well as Hindi. The Computer Proficiency Certification Test is run by MAP_IT, the Madhya Pradesh Agency for Promotion of Information Technology, and many state government posts in MP ask for a valid CPCT scorecard.
Most of the marks come from practical computer use rather than theory, and the typing speed you reach often matters as much as the MCQ score. Below you will find the CPCT exam pattern, the topics in each block, how the typing round works, and a plan to get both parts ready together.

What the CPCT is and who needs it
The CPCT is not a recruitment exam by itself. It is a certification that the state uses to check whether a candidate can actually work on a computer and type in both languages. Departments in Madhya Pradesh list it as a requirement for clerical, data entry, assistant and similar posts, and a court order of the MP High Court describes it as a composite test of computer proficiency and typing that replaced the older separate typing requirement.
You can sit for it after higher secondary (class 12) or a polytechnic diploma taken after class 10, once you are at least 18 years old. Reports mention no maximum age, and you may take it again to lift your score.
CPCT exam pattern at a glance
| Part | What it covers | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Section A: MCQ | 75 questions on computers, IT skills, comprehension, maths, reasoning and general awareness | 75 minutes |
| Section B: English typing | One passage, speed measured in net words per minute | 15 minutes |
| Section B: Hindi typing | One Hindi passage, speed in net words per minute | 15 minutes |
You get one mark per right choice, and reports agree there is no deduction for wrong or skipped questions, so a guess always beats a blank. Both sections are compulsory. A short practice round runs before each typing passage, and its result is ignored. The MCQ screen can be switched between the two languages.

How the typing test is scored
The typing round gives you a passage on screen to copy within 15 minutes in each language. Your result is shown as net words per minute (NWPM), which subtracts errors from your gross speed, so careless fast typing can lower the figure you end up with. Accuracy counts as much as raw pace.
Hindi typing is where many aspirants fall short. Practise in Unicode on the keyboard layout you intend to use, and check on the portal which Hindi layouts are offered before you book a slot. Reports of past cycles give figures of 30 NWPM in English and 20 NWPM in Hindi as common minimums, but the speed that matters is the one written in the post you are applying for.
Scorecard, validity and qualifying score
The scorecard shows your MCQ marks and your English and Hindi speeds separately. Reports say it stays valid for seven years from the exam, which lets you apply for several recruitments with one sitting. Mock round results are not printed on it.
Sources differ on a fixed pass mark. Some mention 50 percent, while others say departments read the raw scores against their own cut off. Treat the official CPCT brochure and the post advertisement as final.
Where to put your effort
The computer and IT blocks make up most of the 75 questions, so start there. Questions are practical: which menu holds a command, what a shortcut does, how to protect a file. Learning by doing on a real computer beats reading notes.
- Spend extra time on spreadsheet formulas and word processing options, as these are easy to confuse.
- Comprehension is only five questions but quick to score if you read carefully.
- The maths in CPCT stays at school level, so a short daily drill is enough.
A six week plan for both sections
- Weeks 1 and 2: computer fundamentals and operating system tasks, done hands on. Type 20 minutes daily in each language.
- Weeks 3 and 4: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and internet tools. Add 15 aptitude questions a day.
- Week 5: general awareness and comprehension, plus full 75 question timed tests.
- Week 6: two full mock sessions with both typing passages, then revise weak menus and commands.
Class 11 and 12 computer textbooks, a basic office software guide and the official CPCT syllabus from the portal are enough as study material. Aiming at a written recruitment test in MP as well? Look at our MP patwari syllabus and MPPSC syllabus pages, or browse all state exams.

Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in CPCT?
No. Reports of the CPCT pattern agree that wrong or unattempted questions do not reduce your marks. Attempt every one of the 75 questions.
How many NWPM should I aim for in CPCT?
The CPCT only measures and certifies your speed. The required figure is set by the department that recruits, and past reports commonly mention 30 NWPM in English and 20 NWPM in Hindi. Always check the advertisement of your post.
Who can apply for CPCT?
Applicants should hold a class 12 pass or a polytechnic diploma earned after class 10, and must be 18 or older. Reports list no maximum age.
How long is a CPCT scorecard valid?
Several reports put the validity at seven years from the exam. You can sit again to improve a weak score, and confirm the current rule on cpct.mp.gov.in.
Is the CPCT exam in Hindi?
You can view the MCQ questions in either language, while the typing round has one English and one Hindi passage. The reading comprehension questions are based on an English passage.
Which part of cpct ka syllabus takes the longest to master?
Hindi typing is usually the slowest skill to build. In the MCQ section, spreadsheet formulas and software menu questions trip up people who have only read theory, so practise on a real computer.
