How Group 4 selection works
Group 4 is the Commission's largest recruitment for entry level posts in Tamil Nadu government offices. The scheme is simple: one written exam, then certificate verification and counselling, where candidates pick posts and departments in order of rank.
The Tamil part works as both a gate and a score. You must reach the minimum in Part A for Part B to be evaluated at all, and the Part A marks are then added to your total. This is why candidates who are strong in general studies but weak in Tamil sometimes fail to make the list.
Group 4 exam pattern
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Tamil Eligibility cum Scoring Test | 100 | 150 |
| B | General Studies | 75 | 150 |
| Aptitude and Mental Ability | 25 | ||
| Total | 200 | 300 | |
Each question carries 1.5 marks and the whole paper runs for three hours. Two rules matter most:
- You need at least 40% in Part A (60 of 150 marks). Below that, Part B is not evaluated.
- The minimum qualifying total for selection has been 90 of 300 marks.
The Commission does not deduct marks for wrong answers in this exam, so leave no question unanswered.
Part A: Tamil eligibility cum scoring test
The Tamil paper is set at the SSLC level and is answered in Tamil. It has three broad areas:
- Grammar (இலக்கணம்): letters and words, sentence forms, correct usage, word meanings, opposite words, compound words and common errors
- Literature (இலக்கியம்): Thirukkural, Sangam works, epics and later poetry taught in school textbooks
- Tamil scholars and their service: major poets, writers, reformers and their works
School Tamil textbooks from class 6 to 10 published by the state are the main source for this part.
TNPSC group 4 syllabus for general studies
- General science: school level concepts from all three sciences, applied to daily life
- Current events: national and state events, welfare schemes, awards, sports and important personalities
- Geography of India: location, climate, rivers, soils, agriculture, resources and disasters
- History and culture of India: ancient, medieval and modern periods, dynasties and cultural heritage
- Indian polity: Constitution, rights and duties, Parliament, judiciary, local bodies
- Indian economy: planning, rural welfare, basic economic terms
- Indian national movement: freedom struggle and leaders, with Tamil Nadu's role
- History, culture, heritage and socio political movements of Tamil Nadu: including the Thirukkural and social reform movements
- Development administration in Tamil Nadu: social justice, welfare schemes and human development in the state
Aptitude and mental ability topics
- Simplification and percentage
- Highest common factor and least common multiple
- Ratio and proportion problems
- Simple and compound interest
- Area and volume
- Time and work
- Logical reasoning, puzzles and dice
- Visual reasoning and alpha numeric reasoning
- Number series
These 25 questions are short and predictable. With steady practice most candidates can score close to full marks here, which makes this the cheapest marks in the paper.
Where to spend your study hours
Part A carries as many marks as all of Part B, and Tamil questions come from a limited set of school books. Giving roughly 40% of your time to Tamil, 40% to general studies and 20% to aptitude is a balanced start. Inside general studies, the Tamil Nadu units (history, heritage and development administration) and current events are where scores differ most between toppers and others.
A 16 week plan for the Group 4 exam
- Weeks 1 to 6: Tamil textbooks class 6 to 10, one class a week, plus 15 aptitude questions daily.
- Weeks 7 to 11: state school social science books for history, geography, polity and economy, then science.
- Weeks 12 to 14: Tamil Nadu units and the last year's current events and schemes.
- Weeks 15 and 16: full three hour mocks on OMR sheets, two a week, with error review.
If you plan to move up later, the TNPSC group 2 syllabus builds on the same general studies units, and the TNPSC group 1 syllabus goes deeper still. Before you fix a target score, study how past lines are formed in our TNPSC group 4 cut off guide.
