School boardsFlamingo and Vistas80 + 20 marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The English syllabus class 12 CBSE students follow for English Core is an 80-mark theory paper in three parts: reading skills (22 marks), creative writing (18 marks) and literature from Flamingo and Vistas (40 marks), plus 20 marks of internal assessment. Hindi Core works on the same 80 plus 20 model, using Aroh, Vitan and a writing book.

Because English and Hindi are the two subjects almost every class 12 student studies, this page explains them in detail and then gives the overall structure of the class 12 syllabus, with links to the subject pages for physics, chemistry, maths, biology, accountancy and the rest.

How the class 12 syllabus is structured

CBSE publishes the senior secondary curriculum subject by subject every session through its academic portal. For most subjects it gives the units, marks per unit, the question paper design and the internal or practical component.

  • Language subjects such as English and Hindi: 80 marks theory, 20 marks internal.
  • Science subjects with practicals such as physics and chemistry: 70 marks theory, 30 marks practical.
  • Commerce and humanities subjects: usually 80 theory and 20 project or internal, with some exceptions such as geography and computer science that carry practicals.

You take one theory board exam per subject at the end of the year, and a supplementary exam is available if you need it. Check the scheme of each subject in the latest curriculum, as weightages can shift between sessions.

Writing tasks in the class 12th English syllabus

  • Notice: a short formal notice for a school or society, inside a box, with date, heading and issuing authority.
  • Formal invitation and reply: third-person invitations and their acceptance or refusal.
  • Letter: job application with a short resume, or a letter to the editor on a public issue.
  • Article or report: a structured piece of about 120 to 150 words with title and byline.

Each task has a format mark, so practise the layout until it is automatic. Many students lose two or three marks only on format. For grammar points that appear inside these tasks and the reading section, see the class 12 grammar syllabus.

Class 12 Hindi syllabus (Hindi Core and Hindi Elective)

When people search for the class 12th Hindi syllabus, they usually mean Hindi Core (code 302), which most students take. Its theory paper of 80 marks has three broad parts: unseen reading, creative and functional writing, and questions on the textbooks. The books are:

  • आरोह भाग 2 (Aroh Part 2): prose and poetry
  • वितान भाग 2 (Vitan Part 2): supplementary reader
  • अभिव्यक्ति और माध्यम (Abhivyakti aur Madhyam): media and creative writing, including feature, report and article writing

Hindi Elective (code 002) is chosen by fewer students and uses अंतरा भाग 2 and अंतराल भाग 2 along with the same writing book. Both follow NCERT, so the class 12 Hindi syllabus NCERT prints and the CBSE list cover the same texts; the CBSE document tells you which chapters are in scope and how marks are split.

Each subject page lists units and marks for its theory paper and the practical or project work.

A term plan for English and Hindi

  1. April to July: finish half of Flamingo prose and Aroh, and write one notice and one letter each week.
  2. August to October: complete Vistas and Vitan, then the remaining poems. Start the English project and listening and speaking practice early, since recent curricula give 10 marks each to listening and speaking and to the project.
  3. November to December: pre-board revision, two reading passages a day, timed.
  4. January to February: full papers from the official sample papers and past board papers collected through our class 12 previous year question paper guide.
Aditya is a science student who treats English as a scoring subject. He was losing marks in long literature answers because he retold the story. His teacher told him to open each answer with the theme in one line and then use two incidents as proof. His literature section moved from 28 to 34 in the next test.
