Your HSSC group D syllabus comes from one exam, the Group D edition of Haryana's Common Eligibility Test (CET): one objective paper of 100 questions at matriculation level, where 75 percent of the paper tests general subjects (general awareness, reasoning, quantitative ability, English and Hindi) and 25 percent from the history, geography, culture and current affairs of Haryana. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission conducts the test and, for most Group D posts, ranks candidates on this CET score.
Because one paper decides so much, every mark counts. This page sets out the HSSC group D exam pattern as reported from the latest notice, the topics in each subject and a practical plan for a 10th level paper where 25 marks rest on Haryana GK alone.

How Group D recruitment works in Haryana
Haryana fills its Group D vacancies, the peon, helper, watchman, gardener type jobs, in departments and boards through a common test rather than a separate exam for each post. You write the CET Group D once, receive a score, and that score is then used when HSSC prepares merit lists for Group D vacancies. As per the latest notice, the CET score carries full weightage for Group D posts, except for the few posts whose qualification is below matriculation.
After the result, those shortlisted have their certificates checked and are given preference based allotment of departments. Check the advertisement for any post specific conditions and for whether any extra marks or criteria apply in that round.
HSSC group D syllabus and exam pattern
| Part | Subjects | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|
| General subjects | General awareness, reasoning, quantitative ability, English and Hindi | 75 percent (about 75 questions) |
| Haryana specific | History, current affairs, literature, geography, environment and culture of Haryana | 25 percent (about 25 questions) |
| Total | One paper, bilingual (Hindi and English) | 100 questions, 100 marks |
The paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. A wrong answer does not lose marks, but every question you leave untouched costs 1 mark unless you fill the fifth bubble, which means you are choosing not to attempt it. So for every question you must fill exactly one of five bubbles.
To qualify for the CET result, as reported from the newest advertisement, the bar sits at 50 percent (general) and 40 percent (reserved). Qualifying is the floor; selection depends on how high you rank.
General awareness and science
Earlier CET Group D syllabus documents split general awareness into two halves, one on India and one on general science. The current notice only gives the 75 and 25 split, so treat the following as the scope to prepare:
- Indian history: ancient, medieval, modern and the freedom movement
- Indian polity: Constitution, Parliament, rights and duties, local government
- Indian geography with neighbouring countries: rivers, climate, soils, farming
- Art and culture: dances, festivals, monuments
- Everyday science from Class 10: physics (motion, light, electricity), chemistry (acids, metals, common compounds) and biology (human body, diseases, nutrition)
- Recent national and international news, several months back
Reasoning and quantitative ability
Reasoning
- Letter and number series, odd one out, analogies
- Coded words, blood relation puzzles, finding directions
- Rank from top or bottom, linear and circular seating, days and dates, clock hands
- Syllogisms and statement based conclusions
- Figure based items: mirror images, figure counting, picture series
Quantitative ability
- Simplification, HCF and LCM, fractions
- Percentages, ratios, averages
- Shopkeeper sums on discount and gain, plus interest on loans
- Work and time problems, speed and distance, mixtures
- Area and volume, basic geometry and algebra up to Class 10
These questions are straightforward at this level. Learn tables, squares and percent to fraction equivalents by heart; that alone saves minutes.
English, Hindi and Haryana GK
English
- Error detection, blanks, use of tenses
- Word meaning: synonyms, opposites, correct spelling, idioms
- Voice change, narration change, jumbled sentences
Hindi
- Class 10 level vyakaran: samas, sandhi, pratyay, upsarg
- Vilom and paryayvachi words, lokoktiyan and muhavare
- Sentence correction and one word substitution
Haryana GK
- History of the region from the Harappan sites to the formation of the state in 1966
- The state's districts, rivers, soils, farming and minerals
- Haryanvi literature, folk songs, dances, fairs, dress and customs
- Economy, industry and state government schemes
- Sports achievers and awards from the state, recent Haryana news
Many candidates under prepare Haryana GK, even though 25 questions depend on it. Give it a fixed daily hour.
Ten weeks to CET Group D readiness
- Weeks 1 to 3: Class 9 and 10 science and social science basics, plus Haryana history and geography.
- Weeks 4 to 6: maths and reasoning chapter wise, with 20 question drills.
- Weeks 7 and 8: English and Hindi grammar, plus Haryana culture and schemes.
- Weeks 9 and 10: full mock papers twice a week and revision of current affairs.
Books and study material
For general awareness, the NCERT books of Classes 6 to 10 in social science and science are enough for most topics. Any standard 10th level arithmetic book and a basic reasoning book handle the aptitude part. For Haryana GK, pick one recent state GK guide and add the state's own yearly booklets on schemes. Past CET papers, wherever the Commission has released them with answer keys, show the question style better than any book.
Central exams at this level, such as those in the SSC MTS syllabus or RRB group D syllabus guides, share much of the aptitude part. Haryana's other tests are collected in our state exams section, and another summary of the same test is on our Haryana group D syllabus page.
