HP patwari syllabus and exam pattern

State exams12th passRevenue departmentUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The HP patwari syllabus, going by reports on the newest Himachal Pradesh Rajya Chayan Aayog drive, is checked through a single 120 question objective test: 85 come from subjects at 10+2 level and 35 from general knowledge, Himachal Pradesh GK, current affairs, reasoning, everyday science and Matric level English and Hindi. Each question carries one mark.

The newest advertisement (post code 25027) covers 530 Patwari posts, and you need only a 10+2 pass to apply. Since one paper decides who goes to document verification, the way you split time between the 85 question block and the 35 question block shapes your result. Here is the pattern, the topics of each block and a plan that fits them.

HP patwari syllabus and the selection steps

Recruitment runs in three steps. The written screening test comes first and is the only competitive stage. Candidates who score well enough, in order of merit against the vacancies, move on to a check of certificates, and those finally chosen must clear a medical test before they join. There is no interview in the reported scheme.

A patwari keeps village land records, reports crop inspections and helps with mutation and revenue work, so the notification lists knowledge of Himachal customs, manners and dialects, and basic computer use, as desirable. They do not add marks, but they will help you once you join and they explain why Himachal topics carry weight in the paper.

Reports on HPRCA papers mention minimum qualifying percentages for each category, with relaxation possible in some cases. The exact cut points and any penalty for wrong answers are set in each notification, so go through the newest one on the Aayog portal.

Part IIGeneral knowledge of India and Himachal Pradesh, current affairs, everyday science, logical reasoning, social science, Matric level English and Hindi3535

With about 90 minutes reported for 120 questions, you get roughly 45 seconds per question. Part I is the heavier block at about 71 percent of the paper, so speed in maths and grammar sums pays off most.

Part I topics at 10+2 level

  • Mathematics: number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, work and time sums, speed and distance, shopkeeper gain sums, both types of interest, averages, mensuration and basic algebra
  • General science: the school course in physics, chemistry and biology, with health, diet and illness basics
  • Social science: history, geography and civics of India
  • Computer awareness: hardware and software basics, word processing and spreadsheets, internet and email
  • Economics and environment: basic concepts of demand, money and banking, pollution, forests and conservation
  • English: grammar, vocabulary and comprehension
  • Hindi: vyakaran (sandhi, samas, ling, vachan), muhavare, vocabulary and passages

Because Part I has so many questions, even a subject that looks minor, such as computer awareness or environment, can carry a handful of marks.

Part II: GK, Himachal and languages

India and current affairs

  • Indian history across ancient, medieval and modern periods, including the national movement
  • India's relief, rivers, climate, farming and industry
  • Polity: constitutional basics, fundamental rights, the Union and state government, courts, Panchayati Raj
  • National and international news and major government schemes

Himachal Pradesh GK

  • History of the hill states and the formation of Himachal Pradesh
  • Districts, rivers, passes, lakes and climate
  • Fairs, festivals, folk dances, temples and handicrafts
  • State economy: horticulture, hydropower, tourism and state schemes

Reasoning and languages

Series, analogy, classification, direction sense and coding and decoding, along with Matric level English and Hindi grammar.

Revenue and land record terms worth learning

The official scheme does not list land law as a separate part, but study guides report that questions on revenue vocabulary have appeared under general knowledge. Learning a short list of terms is quick and also prepares you for the job:

  • Jamabandi, the record of rights, and khasra and khatauni entries
  • Mutation (intkal) and the steps involved
  • Girdawari, the crop inspection a patwari conducts
  • Basic land measurement units used in Himachal

Keep this to a few hours. The 120 marks are earned mainly in the school subjects and general knowledge listed above.

Eight week study plan for the HP patwari exam

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: mathematics daily for an hour, plus English and Hindi grammar rules.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: general science and social science from NCERT Class 9 and 10 books, with short notes.
  3. Week 5: Himachal GK. Make district wise sheets covering rivers, fairs, temples and projects.
  4. Week 6: computer awareness, environment, economics basics and a reasoning set every day.
  5. Weeks 7 and 8: half a year of news and timed 120 question mocks in 90 minutes.

Kamal from Mandi finished 12th with commerce and fears the science questions. He keeps his strongest areas, maths and Himachal GK, for the morning, and reads one NCERT science chapter each night. In mocks he answers the language and GK questions first, then returns to science with the time left.

Patwari posts in other states follow quite different schemes. Compare the Rajasthan patwari syllabus, the MP patwari syllabus and the UP lekhpal syllabus if you are applying widely, or browse more on the state exams hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the qualification for HP patwari?

You must have cleared Class 12, or an equal level, from a board the state accepts. Knowledge of Himachal customs and dialects and basic computer skills are listed as desirable, not essential.

Which age band is allowed for HP patwari applicants?

Reports give 18 as the minimum and 45 as the maximum, with age reckoned on the date the Aayog names. Reserved groups get relaxation under Himachal government rules; see the advertisement for your category.

Do HP patwari mistakes reduce my score?

Reports on the latest scheme do not mention a penalty, but the Aayog states such rules in each notification and on the admit card. Look at both before you choose how boldly to attempt.

Is the exam in Hindi or English?

The paper includes separate English and Hindi language questions, and general questions are usually set in both languages. The admit card instructions confirm the medium for your paper.

Which part of the syllabus of HP patwari carries the most marks?

Part I, the 10+2 level subjects, is worth 85 out of 120. Inside that block mathematics and the two languages tend to be the most predictable scoring areas.

Is there an interview for HP patwari?

No interview is part of the reported scheme. Selection rests on the written test, after which come certificate checks and a medical.
