RHT Syllabus and Exam Pattern (OSSC Regular Teacher)

What RHT is and the posts it covers

RHT stands for Regular High School Teacher, the term OSSC used for its Regular Teacher recruitment for government secondary schools run by Odisha's school education department. In the last full round the posts were split like this:

Selection ran through a prelims, a main written test and certificate verification. Vacancy numbers change every round, so use these only to see which posts usually appear.

RHT prelims syllabus

Prelims candidates answer 100 objective items for 100 marks on a computer within 2 hours, with one mark per right answer and 0.25 deducted for a wrong one. OSSC's teacher recruitments have used this section split:

• General studies: history of Odisha and India, Indian and world geography, polity, economic and social development, everyday science
• Arithmetic: BODMAS simplification, decimals, factors and multiples, percentages and ratios, profit, loss and discount, averages, interest of both kinds, areas and volumes, work rates, speed problems, data in tables and graphs
• Reasoning: verbal and figure based series, classification, space visualisation, judging situations, remembering visual details, number series
• Computer awareness: hardware basics, operating a computer, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, networks and the use of ICT in a classroom
• Current affairs: national and world news, sports, science and technology, awards and government schemes

RHT syllabus for the main written exam

The main written test is also objective, at graduation level for TGT and language posts and at higher secondary level for physical education. Twenty marks in every post's paper go to pedagogy and evaluation.

The medium depends on the post: English or Odia for TGT papers, with the Odia part in Odia, and the language itself for Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and Telugu.

Pedagogy and evaluation: the shared 20 marks

Because pedagogy appears in every main paper, it is the one topic every RHT candidate must cover. Expect questions on:

• Child development, learning theories and individual differences
• Methods and approaches of teaching your subject at secondary level
• Running a classroom, inclusion, and teaching children who need extra support
• Assessment: CCE, writing a good test, formative checks and end of term exams
• Education policy for schools, how a school is run, and a teacher's professional duties

Your B.Ed notes cover most of this, but solve objective questions on it, since recalling a theory for an essay is different from choosing between four close options.

Eligibility in short

• A graduate degree in the subject combination for your post, with B.Ed, as set out post by post in the advertisement
• Odia studied as a language in the HSC exam or an equivalent, as required in the last round
• Age 21 to 38 years in the last round, and the state's reservation rules give older reserved, women and disabled applicants extra room
• Any teacher eligibility test condition and the subject combinations accepted for each post are listed in the notice

A sixteen week plan for both stages

Prelims and mains test different things, so prepare them in overlapping blocks rather than one after the other.

• Weeks 1 to 6: arithmetic and reasoning daily for an hour, computer awareness twice a week, and your main subjects in the remaining time.
• Weeks 7 to 10: Odisha history and geography, current events, then full 100 question prelims mocks every weekend.
• Weeks 11 to 16: subject revision at graduation depth and pedagogy questions, aiming for one full mains mock a week.

Study material and the OSSC notice

For the prelims, the NCERT school texts on the past, the land, government and science and a book on Odisha's history and geography give the general studies base. Any graded set of arithmetic and reasoning exercises handles the other sections. For the mains, use your graduation textbooks in each subject and your B.Ed course material for pedagogy.
