The upsi syllabus has four sections of 100 marks each: General Hindi; Basic Law, Constitution and General Knowledge; Numerical and Mental Ability; and Mental Aptitude, Intelligence and Reasoning. Together they make a 160 question, 400 mark objective paper lasting two hours. Recent cycles carried no negative marking, and the board fails anyone below 35% in a single section or below 50% overall.
The Recruitment and Promotion Board of UP Police (UPPRPB) uses one written exam for Sub Inspector (Civil Police), Platoon Commander in PAC and Special Security Force, and women SI posts. Here is the full topic list, how the marks are split, and a plan that respects the sectional minimum. Once you know the topics, see what score actually got people selected on the UP SI cut off page.

The selection process
- Written examination: objective, 400 marks. It decides merit.
- Documents and PST: certificates are checked and the board measures men's height and chest, and women's height and weight.

- Medical examination before final appointment.
Men must run 4.8 km in 28 minutes and women 2.4 km in 16 minutes. Minimum height for men is 168 cm (160 cm for ST), and for women 152 cm (147 cm for ST); men's chest must be 79 cm unexpanded with 5 cm expansion (77 cm for ST). Women need a minimum weight of 40 kg.

What changed in the law part
The latest syllabus names the new criminal laws, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, in place of the old Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code. If you are using older notes or papers, update every law topic: section numbers and some definitions have changed, and questions now refer to the new codes.
Where to put your hours
- General Hindi is the scoring base. Grammar topics such as sandhi, samas, synonyms and muhavare are finite and can be mastered; aim for 80 plus here.
- Law and GK is the widest section. Split it into three blocks: constitution, new criminal laws and UP specific GK. Read UP topics separately, as they are easy to neglect.
- Two sections test reasoning. Mental ability questions inside section 3 overlap with section 4, so one reasoning routine serves 60 or more questions.
- Mental aptitude questions are situational. Read them as a sensible police officer would act: calm, lawful and helpful to the public.
A five month study plan
- Month 1: Hindi grammar basics, constitution, arithmetic foundations (percentage, ratio, average).
- Month 2: new criminal laws and other acts in the syllabus, reasoning chapters, interest and time and work.
- Month 3: history, geography and UP GK; mensuration and data tables; ras, chhand and alankar.
- Month 4: current affairs revision, mental aptitude practice, one full paper a week.
- Month 5: two complete practice papers each week from the UP SI previous year papers, with special checks on each section's 35 mark floor.
Keep running from month one so the 4.8 km PET does not become a last minute worry. More state and central police recruitments are grouped in the defence and police hub.
Books, in general terms
Use the official syllabus as your checklist. NCERT books of classes 6 to 12 cover history, geography, polity and science well. Add a class 10 level Hindi grammar book, a bare act or simple guide to the new criminal laws, a UP general knowledge book and a school level arithmetic book.
Whether you look for the upsi hindi syllabus, up si ka syllabus or the syllabus of up si, the four sections stay the same, and the up si syllabus in English matches the Hindi version. The question paper itself is bilingual, except for the General Hindi section.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the UP SI written paper?
Two hours for 160 objective questions, split evenly as 40 per section. Every section carries 100 marks, so the paper totals 400.
Is there negative marking in UP SI?
Recent UP SI written exams have deducted nothing for wrong answers, which means leaving any bubble empty simply throws away 2.5 marks. Check the advertisement for your cycle in case the board changes this.
What are the qualifying marks?
At least 35% in each section and 50% in aggregate, which is 200 out of 400. Falling below 35 in even one section rules you out, whatever your total.
Which law topics are in the upsi syllabus now?
The latest syllabus lists the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, along with laws on women and children, RTI, IT and cyber crime, human rights and revenue laws, plus the Constitution.
Who can sit for UP SI?
Graduates of any recognised university who are between 21 and 28 on the board's reference date may apply, with relaxation for reserved categories as per UP government rules.
Does the SI paper match the constable one?
No. The SI paper adds a full section on law and the Constitution, a separate General Hindi section and two reasoning sections at graduate level. Compare it with the UP Police Constable syllabus.
