Your BSc syllabus is set by your own university, but most universities now build it on the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes: a three year degree of at least 120 credits, or a four year honours or research degree of at least 160 credits, made up of major subjects, a minor, skill courses and an internship. Inside that frame, each department decides the exact papers for physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, computer science and the rest.
This guide explains the structure first, then lists the topics you can expect in the most common B.Sc subjects, how semester exams and practicals are assessed, and how entrance exams such as CUET fit in. A short Hindi section at the end covers the BSc ka syllabus for readers who prefer it.

How a B.Sc programme is built
Under the UGC framework a B.Sc is a set of credit carrying courses spread over six or eight semesters. Credits, not years, decide when you can claim a qualification.
| Component | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Major (discipline core) | Your main subject, studied every semester, for example physics or zoology |
| Minor | A second subject in less depth, such as mathematics alongside physics |
| Multidisciplinary courses | Papers from outside science, taken in the early semesters |
| Ability enhancement (AEC) | Language and communication courses |
| Skill enhancement (SEC) | Hands on courses such as lab techniques, data analysis or instrumentation |
| Value added (VAC) | Environment, Indian knowledge systems, health and similar courses |
| Internship and project | Summer internship, and a dissertation in the fourth year if you take the research route |
To go on to the research stream in year four, the framework expects at least 75% marks across the first six semesters. Universities may add their own conditions.

Biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry and statistics follow the same pattern: a broad base in the first two years, specialised papers and lab work later. B.Sc nursing and B.Sc agriculture are professional courses with their own regulators and syllabi; the entrance papers for them are covered on our AIIMS nursing entrance and ICAR syllabus pages.
How semester exams and practicals work
Each course is usually assessed in two parts: continuous internal assessment during the semester (tests, assignments, attendance, seminars) and an end of semester written exam. Science subjects with a lab component add a practical exam, often with a viva and a record book that is checked. The split between internal and external marks, and the pass mark per paper, are decided by your university and printed in its ordinance or syllabus booklet.
Admission, CUET and what comes after
Most B.Sc programmes need class 12 with science. Central universities and many others admit through the common entrance test; the CUET UG syllabus page explains which domain subjects to pick for each B.Sc stream. State universities often use class 12 merit or their own tests.
After graduation, the IIT JAM syllabus is the route to M.Sc at the IITs and several other institutes, and life science graduates who go on to a master's later aim for the CSIR NET life science exam. If you are choosing a newer subject, the data science syllabus page shows how that course is laid out.
Study habits that suit the B.Sc pattern
- Download your department's syllabus for your batch on day one and pin it inside your notebook. Many students study chapters that are not on their list.
- Solve the last few years of your own university's question papers, which show how many units each paper draws from.
- Treat practicals as marks you can count on: write up every experiment the same day.
- Use NCERT class 11 and 12 books to refill gaps in the first semester before moving to standard degree textbooks.
- If you plan to sit IIT JAM or another master's entrance, start its extra problem practice from the second year.
Frequently asked questions
Is B.Sc now four years long?
It can be. Under the UGC framework you may finish with a degree after three years or continue to a fourth year for honours or honours with research. Whether your university offers the fourth year, and on what conditions, is set in its own rules.
Can I leave a B.Sc midway and still get something?
The framework allows a certificate after the first year and a diploma after the second, provided you meet the credit requirements and the extra vocational course or internship the university asks for. You may also be able to rejoin later.
Which B.Sc subject has the toughest syllabus?
Students differ, but physics and mathematics honours are often seen as the most demanding because of the heavy mathematics. Choose the subject you enjoy studying every day, since you will spend three or four years on it.
Is the B.Sc syllabus the same in every university?
No. The credit structure is shared, but paper titles, unit content and the order of topics vary. Always use your own university's syllabus for your admission year.
Do I need CUET for B.Sc admission?
For central universities, generally yes. Many state and private universities also accept CUET scores, while others rank applicants by board percentage or a test of their own.
Are practicals compulsory in B.Sc?
For lab based subjects such as physics, chemistry, botany and zoology, yes. Practical marks are counted separately, and you usually need to pass them on their own.
