UP Police Constable Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Defence and police12th pass300 marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The UP police constable syllabus covers four subjects in one written paper: General Knowledge, General Hindi, numerical plus mental ability, and a mental aptitude cum IQ and reasoning part, for 150 questions and 300 marks in two hours. Candidates who score high enough then go through document verification with a physical standard test, a qualifying race and a medical check.

The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) runs the process for Constable Civil Police, PAC, Jail Warder and related posts. The written marks decide your merit, so this page focuses on what each section asks and how to split your study time.

Selection stages from form to joining

  1. Written examination: 150 multiple choice questions on an OMR sheet. Your rank comes from these marks.
  2. Document verification and Physical Standard Test (PST): certificates are checked and height, chest (men) and weight (women) are measured.
  3. PET: a race against the clock that must be finished; it adds nothing to your score.
  4. Medical examination: fitness check before appointment.

Since the physical stages only filter, every extra mark in the written test moves you up the merit list. The cut off page for UP constables shows how written marks become a final selection.

At 2 marks a question and 120 minutes for the lot, you get a little under a minute for every item. Recent UPPRPB constable papers were reported to take away 0.5 mark per incorrect bubble (your notification has the final word), so mark a shaky answer only after eliminating a pair of options.

General Knowledge topics

  • History of India, including the freedom struggle
  • Indian Constitution, polity and public administration
  • Geography of India and natural resources
  • Indian economy, agriculture, commerce and trade, banking
  • Population, environment and urbanisation
  • Science and technology in daily life
  • Current national and international events, international organisations
  • Uttar Pradesh: education, culture, social customs, land revenue system and administration
  • Internal security, terrorism, human rights
  • Cyber crime, social media communication and money laundering
  • Laws and schemes for the protection of women and children

The UP specific and policing topics are where many aspirants lose easy marks, because general GK books treat them briefly.

General Hindi topics

This section tests standard Hindi grammar and some literature, at roughly the level of class 10 to 12 Hindi.

  • Opposite and similar words (vilom and paryayvachi)
  • One word for a phrase, tatsam and tadbhav words
  • Gender, number, correct spellings and sentence correction
  • Sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay
  • Idioms and proverbs (muhavare and lokoktiyan)
  • Alankar, ras and chhand basics
  • Famous Hindi writers, poets and their works
  • Unseen passage with questions

Numerical and Mental Ability topics

  • Whole numbers, fractions and decimals, simplification
  • LCM, HCF and square roots
  • Ratio and proportion, percentage, average
  • Profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest, partnership
  • Work and wages, pipes and cisterns, trains and speed
  • Mensuration of basic figures
  • Mental ability items: logical diagrams, symbol and relationship questions, coding, word formation, direction sense, letter and number series

The arithmetic is at school level. Speed comes from knowing multiplication tables and squares till 30 by heart, plus quick percentage to fraction conversions.

Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning topics

This section mixes two things. The mental aptitude part asks about situations a constable faces: public interest, law and order, communal harmony, crime control, rural policing, social awareness, adaptability, emotional intelligence and decision making. The IQ and reasoning part covers analogies, similarities and differences, classification of words and figures, spatial visualisation, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetic reasoning and number or figure series.

For the aptitude questions, pick the option that is lawful, calm and protects the public, rather than the most forceful one.

Physical standards and the race

PST and PET as per recent UPPRPB notices
TestMenWomen
Height168 cm (General, OBC, SC), 160 cm (ST)152 cm (General, OBC, SC), 147 cm (ST)

WeightNot fixedAt least 40 kg
Race4.8 km, within 25 minutes2.4 km, time limit 14 minutes

Start running practice early. Plenty of aspirants pass the paper yet falter on the track, simply because training began only after the result.

A 12 week plan for the UP police constable syllabus

  • Weeks 1 to 4: arithmetic basics daily (45 minutes), Hindi grammar rules, and Indian polity and history for GK.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: reasoning sets daily, UP specific GK and policing topics, Hindi idioms and literature, and one sectional test each weekend.
  • Weeks 9 to 12: full 150 question mocks on OMR sheets in 2 hours, current affairs of the last 8 to 10 months, and revision from short notes.
Sandeep from Bareilly works in his family shop until 2 pm. He studies from 3 pm to 7 pm and runs 3 km every morning at 6 am. By week 10 he can finish the race distance in under 23 minutes and scores above 200 in mocks, so he moves his practice toward accuracy, cutting wrong answers.

On books: NCERT social science and science texts for classes 6 to 10 give most of the GK base, and a standard class 12 level Hindi grammar book covers the Hindi section. Use our past constable papers page for practice sets.

Frequently asked questions

Up police ka syllabus kya hai?

One written paper with four sections: GK, Hindi, maths with mental ability, and reasoning with mental aptitude. After that come document checks, physical measurement, a race and a medical.

Is the UP police exam online or offline?

The constable written test has been held offline on OMR sheets in recent recruitments. Check the admit card instructions for your exam.

Which section of the up constable syllabus is the most scoring?

General Hindi and reasoning are usually the most scoring for Hindi medium students, as both depend on practice more than memory. GK has the widest range, so it needs regular revision.

What age limit applies to UP police constable recruitment?

The latest notification gives 18 to 22 years for men and 18 to 25 for women in the general category, and a one time relaxation of 3 years was then allowed for this recruitment, taking the limits to 25 and 28. Reserved categories of UP get further relaxation.

Does the race carry marks?

No. The PET is qualifying only. You must finish within the time, but your merit is still based on written marks.

Is the syllabus of UP police constable the same for PAC and jail warder?

Yes. The written exam is common to Constable Civil Police, PAC armed and special force, women battalion, mounted police and Jail Warder posts under the same advertisement, though physical rules differ slightly for some posts.
