The PNST syllabus covers five subjects at class 12 level, physics, chemistry, biology, English and general knowledge, with 20 questions from each in a 100-question, 100-mark paper that you answer in two hours and that carries no negative marking. PNST, the Pre Nursing Selection Test, is the entrance used for B.Sc Nursing seats in Madhya Pradesh.
MPESB in Bhopal sets and runs the paper, and lately its notification has bundled it with the selection test for the GNM diploma. Below you will find the PNST exam pattern, the chapters to study in each subject, who can apply, how the qualifying percentile works and a six week timetable for after your boards. For seats at national institutes, our AIIMS B.Sc nursing syllabus page explains a tougher, separate test.

What PNST is and how admission works
PNST ranks applicants for B.Sc Nursing seats in Madhya Pradesh. The process is short:
- Entrance test: one objective paper conducted by the board.
- Result and merit list: candidates who reach the qualifying percentile are ranked by score.
- Counselling: seats are allotted online by the state's medical education authorities in a separate process, so follow both the board's result notice and the counselling notice.
The GNM course uses its own selection test, often advertised alongside PNST in a single notification. If you are unsure whether to aim for the degree or the diploma, read the eligibility for both before applying, because the subject and percentage conditions differ.
PNST exam pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Biology (botany and zoology) | 20 | 20 |
| Physics | 20 | 20 |
| Chemistry | 20 | 20 |
| English | 20 | 20 |
| General knowledge | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
You get 120 minutes, which works out to a little over a minute per question. Every correct response adds a mark, and an incorrect one leaves your total untouched. So guess on anything left in the final minutes. Question papers come in both Hindi and English versions.
Note what is not here: unlike many medical entrances, biology carries no more weight than English or GK. A student strong in English and current affairs can make up ground on the science sections.
PNST syllabus for each subject
The science sections follow the class 12 science course of the state board, which draws on class 11 topics as well.
Physics
- Units of measurement, describing motion, force and the laws of motion, gravity, energy and work
- Heat and thermodynamics, sound and waves
- Light: reflection, refraction, lenses and the eye
- Electric current and circuits, magnets and the magnetic effect of a current
Chemistry
- Atomic structure and the periodic table
- Types of chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts
- Basics of organic chemistry and common compounds
Biology
- Cell structure and function
- How the human body works: food and digestion, lungs, heart and blood, kidneys, the nervous and endocrine systems
- Plant physiology, genetics and evolution
- Health, hygiene and disease; ecology and environment
English
- Tenses, voice and narration
- Vocabulary and word meanings
- Reading comprehension, rearranging sentences and spotting errors
General knowledge
- The Indian Constitution and basic polity
- History, geography and culture of Madhya Pradesh
- National and international news, plus general science facts
Who can apply for PNST
- Domicile: Indian citizens who are domiciled in Madhya Pradesh.
- Age: 17 or older when counted on 31 December in the admission year; reports mention no ceiling.
- Qualification: passed class 12 with physics, chemistry and biology, scoring 45% or more in aggregate in general category as reported, and a lower minimum for some categories.
Qualifying in the test is set by percentile rather than raw marks. Recent reports put the bar at the 50th percentile for applicants from the open and EWS pools, the 45th for general category candidates with disabilities and the 40th for SC, ST and OBC. Check the rule book, because English as a subject and other conditions under nursing council norms are spelt out there.
Scoring well in each section
All five sections carry equal marks, which means a poor section drags you down just as far as a good one lifts you. Look at your class 12 marks and spend more time where they were lowest.
- Biology: human physiology is the backbone of nursing study and a natural place to score. Read the textbook diagrams with their labels.
- Physics and chemistry: revise every formula with one solved example, and practise short numericals as well as theory at the level of your board papers.
- English: grammar rules can be learnt in three weeks with daily exercises.
- GK: Madhya Pradesh facts (rivers, national parks, districts, culture) plus six months of current events.
A six week plan after the boards
- Week 1: list every topic above and mark each green, amber or red based on how well you know it.
- Weeks 2 and 3: red topics first in physics and chemistry, with GK reading every day.
- Week 4: biology revision and English grammar drills.
- Weeks 5 and 6: a full 100-question timed paper every other day, using past papers from the board where available.
Your core books are your state board class 11 and 12 science textbooks, a school English grammar and a book on Madhya Pradesh general knowledge. That is enough for a 20-question science section pitched at board level.
Frequently asked questions
What does PNST stand for?
PNST stands for Pre Nursing Selection Test. In Madhya Pradesh it is the entrance for B.Sc Nursing seats, conducted by the Employees Selection Board.
How many questions does the PNST paper have?
The paper has 100 objective items, a single mark riding on each, with 20 drawn from each of physics, chemistry, biology, English and general knowledge. You get two hours.
Are marks deducted for wrong answers in PNST?
Reports on recent PNST papers show no deduction. An incorrect answer simply earns zero, so leave nothing blank.
Is there an age rule for PNST?
You should have turned 17 by 31 December in your year of admission. Reports do not mention any maximum age.
Can I write PNST in Hindi?
Yes. Both Hindi and English versions are given, so use whichever you studied science in.
Is PNST the same as the GNM test?
No. PNST is for the B.Sc Nursing degree, while the GNM diploma has its own selection test. The board has often advertised the two together.
