VAO Exam Syllabus and Pattern for Village Administrative Officer

State examsSSLC levelVillage postingUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The vao exam syllabus in Tamil Nadu is the Group 4 syllabus: Village Administrative Officer posts are filled through the TNPSC Combined Civil Services Examination IV, one OMR test worth 300 marks across 200 items, made up of a compulsory Tamil section, general studies and aptitude, all at SSLC standard. There is no separate VAO paper any more, so whatever you prepare for Group 4 is exactly what decides a VAO seat.

What sets the VAO post apart is its own age band, a residence rule and the cash security you pay on joining. This page covers the paper, each subject, those VAO specific rules, and a short note on the Karnataka VAO exam for readers from that state.

How VAO recruitment works in Tamil Nadu

Village Administrative Officers keep land records, issue certificates and act as the first point of revenue administration in a village. TNPSC once held a separate VAO examination, but the post has been merged into the Group 4 recruitment, which also covers Junior Assistant, Typist, Bill Collector, Field Surveyor and similar posts.

That means one paper, one rank list and then counselling. When your turn comes in counselling, you choose VAO if you meet its extra conditions and a vacancy is still open for your community and category. A good rank is therefore the whole game; there is no second stage where you can make up lost marks.

VAO exam pattern under Group 4

Scheme of the written paper as given in the Group 4 notification
PartSubjectQuestionsMarksLanguage
ATamil eligibility and scoring100150Tamil only
BGeneral Studies75150Tamil and English
Aptitude and Mental Ability25
Total (3 hours)200300

Two thresholds shape your preparation. Your Part B sheet is checked only when Part A crosses 40 percent, meaning 60 of its 150 marks. On top of that, the notification sets a minimum qualifying total of 90 out of 300 for all communities. Marks of both parts are added for ranking, so Tamil is not just a pass or fail filter.

Vacancies, post codes and some conditions are set afresh in every Group 4 notification. Confirm the scheme and the VAO rules in the latest notification on the Commission's website each time a fresh call for applications comes out.

Part A: what the Tamil test asks

Part A follows the SSLC standard and leans heavily on Tamil Nadu state board textbooks. Expect three blocks:

  • Grammar: letters and their classes, word formation, sentence types, correct usage, synonyms and antonyms, splitting and joining words, and spotting errors
  • Literature: Thirukkural couplets, Sangam poetry, the epics, devotional literature and modern poems in the school syllabus
  • Scholars and their contributions: poets, prose writers, reformers and their major works and titles

Since the questions are only in Tamil, candidates who studied in English medium often lose most of their marks here. Reading the class 6 to 10 Tamil books cover to cover, with a notebook of authors and works, is the fastest fix.

General studies units in the VAO syllabus

The 75 general studies questions are spread over these units:

  1. General science: everyday applications of school physics, chemistry and biology
  2. Current events: state and national happenings, schemes, awards and sports
  3. Geography of India: relief, monsoon, rivers, soils, crops, minerals and natural hazards
  4. Indian history and its cultural heritage
  5. Indian polity: the Constitution, citizens' rights and duties, Union and state governments, panchayats and municipalities
  6. Indian economy: basic concepts, planning and rural welfare
  7. Indian national movement and Tamil Nadu's part in it
  8. Tamil Nadu's past, its culture and heritage, and the social reform and political movements of the state
  9. How Tamil Nadu runs development: state welfare programmes, reservation and social justice policy, and human development indicators

For a would be VAO, the local body, land and welfare scheme topics are worth extra attention, because they also describe the work you will do. The same units are listed in more detail on our TNPSC group 4 syllabus page.

Aptitude and mental ability

Twenty five short questions test simplification, percentages, HCF, LCM, ratios, interest (simple and compound), mensuration of areas and volumes, work and time, number series, logical reasoning, puzzles, dice and visual reasoning. These are straight school arithmetic problems, and with daily practice you can aim to lose no more than two or three of them.

Eligibility rules special to the VAO post

The VAO row of the notification has rules that differ from other Group 4 posts. In the notification we checked, they were:

VAO conditions as per the Group 4 notification checked
RuleDetail
Age, Others21 to 32 years
Age, SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC, BCM and destitute widows21 to 42 years
QualificationPass in SSLC or equivalent, with eligibility for higher secondary or college courses
TamilAdequate knowledge of Tamil on the date of notification
ResidenceYou must live in the village in your charge
Cash securityPaid within a month of joining; lower for MBC/DC, BC and BCM, and exempt for SC, SC(A) and ST

The age base date and the security amounts can change between notifications, and persons with benchmark disability and ex servicemen get further concessions, so read the post table each time.

A study plan aimed at a VAO rank

Part A carries half the paper, which is why most toppers spend the first stretch on Tamil.

  1. Weeks 1 to 5: Tamil books of classes 6 to 10, two lessons a day, plus grammar drills and 20 aptitude questions.
  2. Weeks 6 to 10: the same classes' social science books, for history, maps, civics and economics; science goes in the evening slot.
  3. Weeks 11 to 13: the state specific units on Tamil Nadu, followed by twelve months of news and every major state scheme.
  4. Weeks 14 and 15: timed mocks of the complete paper, marked on OMR sheets, with a strict check of every wrong answer.
Meena from Villupuram is aiming at a VAO post close to home. Her mocks show 118 in Tamil but only 84 in Part B. She keeps one hour of Tamil revision daily and moves the rest of her time to Tamil Nadu welfare schemes, polity and current events, which carry most of the Part B marks she is losing.

You can download old Group 4 question papers from the TNPSC site, while the TNPSC group 4 cut off guide shows how the final lines are drawn.

Karnataka VAO exam syllabus in brief

  • A compulsory Kannada language test of 150 marks, qualifying only
  • Paper 1, General Knowledge: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, covering current affairs, science, the Constitution, history and geography with a Karnataka focus, revenue administration, rural development and Panchayat Raj

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate VAO exam in Tamil Nadu?

No. VAO posts are filled through the Group 4 Combined Civil Services Examination IV. You apply for Group 4, write the common paper, and choose VAO during counselling if your rank and eligibility allow it.

What age band applies to the VAO post?

In the notification we checked, the VAO age range was 21 to 32 years for the Others category and 21 to 42 years for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC, BCM and destitute widows. Extra concessions apply to persons with benchmark disability and ex servicemen. The post table in the newest notification has the final word.

Is the Tamil paper compulsory for VAO?

Yes. Part A is compulsory, and a score below 60 of 150 there means your Part B is never valued. Those Tamil marks count towards your rank as well.

Are marks cut for wrong VAO answers?

Group 4 has been held without any deduction for wrong answers, so leaving blanks only throws marks away. The hall ticket instructions confirm the rule for your sitting. The Karnataka VAO test is different and deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

Do I have to live in the village as a VAO?

Yes. The notification states that a VAO must reside in the village under their charge for as long as they hold that charge.

Which books cover the VAO syllabus?

Tamil Nadu state board textbooks of classes 6 to 10 in Tamil, social science and science take care of the bulk of the paper. Add a current affairs record of the past year and the state government's scheme booklets.
