The RRB technician syllabus is tested in a single computer based test (CBT) of 100 questions in 90 minutes, but the two posts get different papers: Grade I Signal leans on computers and basic engineering, while Grade III leans on general science at the 10th standard level. Every wrong answer costs one third of a mark.
Below you will find the railway technician syllabus for both grades as set out in the latest Centralised Employment Notice (CEN), with section-wise question counts, topic lists, a short Hindi summary and a revision order that follows the weight of each section.

How the selection works for both grades
There is no second CBT, no aptitude test and no interview for these posts. The order is simple:
- CBT: one online paper. Your normalised score decides your rank in your RRB and trade.
- Document verification: candidates are called in a 1:1 ratio against the vacancies of each RRB, in order of CBT merit.
- Medical examination: each trade carries a medical standard (A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1), mostly about eyesight. A Signal post needs B-1.
Since the CBT is the only scoring stage, every mark you lose to a careless guess pushes you down the list. When papers are held in several shifts, RRB normalises the marks so that a tougher shift does not hurt you.

Reasoning (15) and General Awareness (10)
Reasoning covers analogies, number and alphabet series, coding and decoding, syllogism, relationships, jumbling, mathematical operations, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency, decision making, classification, directions and statement based questions. General awareness asks about current affairs, Indian geography, history and culture including the freedom struggle, polity and the Constitution, the economy, environment, sports and scientific developments.
Railway technician grade 3 syllabus for each section
General Science (40 questions)
The official syllabus names only physics, chemistry and life sciences up to the 10th standard (CBSE). In practice that means the class 9 and 10 chapters, such as:
- Physics: motion, force and laws of motion, work and energy, sound, light (reflection, refraction, mirror and lens formula), electricity, magnetism, heat
- Chemistry: matter, atoms and molecules, structure of the atom, chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non metals, carbon compounds, periodic classification
- Life science: cells and tissues, nutrition, respiration, the human body and its systems, diseases, heredity, ecosystems and the environment
Mathematics (25 questions)
- Number system and BODMAS simplification, fractions and decimals, HCF and LCM, square roots
- Percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, simple interest, compound interest
- Pipes and cisterns, work and time, speed with time and distance
- Mensuration, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, elementary statistics
- Age problems, calendar and clock
General Intelligence and Reasoning (25 questions)
The same family of topics as Grade I, asked at an easier level: series, analogy, classification, coding, directions, blood relations, Venn diagrams, syllogism, simple puzzles and seating arrangement.
General Awareness (10 questions)
Current affairs, Indian history and geography, polity, economy, sports and awards. This is the smallest section, so do not let it eat your study time.
Where the marks sit and what to focus on
Compare the tables and one fact stands out. In Grade III, general science alone is 40% of the paper. In Grade I Signal, basic science and engineering plus computers make up 55 marks. Whichever post you choose, the technical block decides your rank, because most serious candidates score close to each other in reasoning.
- For Grade III, 10th class NCERT physics and chemistry chapters give the best return. Candidate feedback from recent shifts mentions Newton's laws, the mirror formula, human body systems and chemical reactions.
- For Grade I Signal, electricity and magnetism is the heaviest cluster inside basic science, as per reports from recent shifts, and the computer section is mostly direct, fact based questions.
- Mathematics in both papers is arithmetic heavy. Percentages, ratio, time and work, and mensuration repeat every year.
Use the RRB technician previous papers page to see how these topics are actually framed.
A 12-week study plan built on this syllabus
Spend the first four weeks on concepts, the next five on mixed practice and the last three on full mocks. A weekly split that works for most aspirants:
- Grade III: three days science, two days maths, one day reasoning, half a day general awareness, half a day for revision notes.
- Grade I Signal: two days basic science and engineering, one and a half days computers, one and a half days maths, one day reasoning, one day for current affairs and revision.
In the final month, answer a doubtful question only when two of its four choices are clearly wrong to you. Good attempts in recent shifts were reported in the 70 to 80 range out of 100, with high accuracy.
Books and material that cover the syllabus
A small pile of sources you actually finish beats a crowded shelf. Stick to these:
- Class 9 and 10 NCERT science textbooks for the Grade III science section, and class 11 physics basics for units, work and energy.
- Your ITI trade theory notes for safety, simple machines and drawing, which also help Grade I candidates.
- Any standard school level arithmetic book for practice, plus a basic computer fundamentals text for Grade I.
- The official syllabus printed in the CEN. Tick topics off it rather than off a coaching list.
If you are also preparing for the Assistant Loco Pilot exam, much of the arithmetic and science overlaps; see the RRB ALP syllabus.
RRB technician syllabus in Hindi

Frequently asked questions
Is the RRB technician grade 3 syllabus different from grade 1?
Yes. Grade III has 40 general science questions at the 10th level and no computer section. Grade I Signal replaces general science with 35 basic science and engineering questions and adds 20 questions on computers. Both have maths, reasoning and general awareness.
How many questions and how much time does the technician paper have?
Both grades get 100 questions of 1 mark each in 90 minutes. Eligible PwBD candidates using a scribe get 120 minutes.
Do wrong answers cost marks in the RRB technician exam?
Yes. Each incorrect response loses you one third of a mark. Questions you leave blank carry no penalty.
What are the qualifying marks in the CBT?
The latest notice asks UR and EWS candidates for at least 40%, OBC (NCL) and SC candidates for 30%, and ST candidates for 25%. Clearing these marks only makes you eligible; the actual cut off for document verification is usually much higher. See the RRB technician cut off page.
Is there a CBT 2 or skill test for technician posts?
No. Selection is through one CBT, then document verification and medical examination. There is no second stage of written testing in the current scheme.
Can I apply for both Grade I Signal and Grade III?
The two grades need different qualifications, so check which one you qualify for on the RRB technician eligibility page. Rules on applying for more than one post are given in each CEN, so read that section before you fill the form.
