The junior assistant JKSSB syllabus has four units of 20 marks each (General English, General Awareness with special reference to Jammu and Kashmir, Numerical and Reasoning Ability, and Basic Concepts of Computers), tested in an 80 mark objective paper, followed by a type test worth 20 marks. Your final merit is out of 100.
The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board recruits Junior Assistants for many departments of the Union Territory, and the most recent round used an OMR based written paper. Because every unit has the same weight, there is no section you can safely ignore. This page breaks each unit into topics and suggests a sensible time split.

Junior assistant JKSSB syllabus: how selection works
Recruitment moves in three steps. First comes a written objective test of 80 marks. Candidates who score well enough are shortlisted for the type test, held on computers, which carries 20 marks. Those two scores are added, and ranks are set on that combined figure. After that, the Board checks original certificates before the Board recommends them to departments.
In the latest round the written paper was held on OMR sheets, the type test shortlist came out a few months later, and a combined score of written and type test marks was published at the end. Earlier rounds followed the same order, so you can plan on that sequence while checking each new notice.
JKSSB junior assistant exam pattern table
| Unit | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | General English | 20 | 20 |
| II | General Awareness with special reference to J&K UT | 20 | 20 |
| III | Numerical and Reasoning Ability | 20 | 20 |
| IV | Basic Concepts of Computers | 20 | 20 |
| Written test total | 80 | 80 | |
| Type test | Skill on computer | 20 | |
| Final merit | 100 | ||
Each wrong answer is reported to cost 0.25, meaning four blind guesses that miss cancel a right answer. Earlier Junior Assistant rounds were widely reported as an 80 minute paper; the exact time is printed on the admit card, so confirm it there.

How the type test is scored
The type test checks your net typing speed on a computer at the exam centre. Recent rounds treat a speed of 35 words per minute as the base requirement for the post. In the combined result for the latest round, type test marks were worked out relative to the fastest candidate: your net speed divided by the highest net speed, multiplied by 20. So speed beyond the minimum still adds marks.
Practise on an English keyboard for twenty minutes daily from the start, instead of waiting for the shortlist to appear.
Ten weeks to cover the four units
- Weeks 1 to 3: English grammar rules and arithmetic chapters, with 20 questions of each daily.
- Weeks 4 to 5: computer unit from a single good basics book, plus MS Office menus and shortcuts.
- Weeks 6 to 7: J&K history, geography and economy; make notes on rivers, passes, lakes and tourist places.
- Weeks 8 to 10: full 80 question mocks under time, previous JKSSB papers, and three months of current affairs.
School NCERT books are useful for Indian geography and history; for the UT portion, rely on official department and tourism material. The same skills feed into the SSC CHSL syllabus, which also leads to clerical posts with a typing test, and into police recruitment covered on the JKP constable syllabus page.
Who can apply

General category applicants could be up to 40 years old in recent advertisements, with relaxed limits for reserved classes, persons with disabilities and ex servicemen. Only domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir can apply for these UT posts. Exact age cut off dates and relaxations differ by advertisement, so check the latest notification before applying.
