NDA Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Maths and GAT

Defence and police12th levelOffline OMRUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The NDA syllabus has two written papers set by UPSC: Mathematics for 300 marks and the General Ability Test (GAT) for 600 marks, followed by a 900 mark SSB interview for those who clear the written cut off. Maths is pitched at Class 11 and 12 level, while GAT mixes English with general knowledge from physics, chemistry, general science, history, geography and current events.

This page lists every topic the official notification names, shows the marking scheme with negative marking, and gives you a plan that matches where the marks actually sit. Not sure you qualify on age or Class 12 subjects? Read NDA eligibility before anything else.

How the NDA selection runs from paper to academy

The route to the academy passes through three gates. The written exam is held on one day with Maths in the morning and GAT later. UPSC then publishes a list of candidates who crossed the written cut off and the sectional minimums. Those candidates are called to a Services Selection Board (SSB) for a five day interview made up of screening tests, psychology tests, outdoor group work, an interview and a conference. Those recommended go through a medical exam before a final merit list is drawn up.

Women candidates appear in the same exam and are ranked in a separate merit list. Air Force applicants also take the computerised pilot selection system at the SSB.

The NDA marking scheme deducts one third of a question's marks for every wrong answer. A blank answer costs nothing. Papers are bilingual, in Hindi and English, except the English section of GAT. You need a minimum score in each paper as well as the overall written cut off; UPSC fixes those minimums every session, so check the result notice.

NDA syllabus for the Mathematics paper

The NDA maths syllabus follows Class 11 and 12 mathematics, and every chapter carries real weight. Here is the official list, grouped the way the notification groups it.

  • Algebra: sets, Venn diagrams, De Morgan laws, relations and equivalence relations, complex numbers with modulus, argument and cube roots of unity, binary system and decimal to binary conversion, arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions, quadratic equations, linear inequations in two variables solved graphically, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, logarithms.
  • Matrices and determinants: types of matrices, operations, properties of determinants, adjoint and inverse, solving linear equations by Cramer's rule and the matrix method.
  • Trigonometry: degree and radian measure, ratios and identities, sum and difference formulae, multiple and sub multiple angles, inverse trigonometric functions, heights and distances, properties of triangles.
  • Analytical geometry of two and three dimensions: distance formula, equations of a line in various forms, angle between lines, distance of a point from a line, circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola in standard form, direction cosines and ratios, equations of a plane and a line, sphere.
  • Differential calculus: functions, domain and range, composite, one to one, onto and inverse functions, limits and continuity, derivatives and their meaning, chain rule, second order derivatives, increasing and decreasing functions, maxima and minima.
  • Integral calculus and differential equations: integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals, definite integrals and areas bounded by curves, order and degree of a differential equation, first order first degree equations, growth and decay problems.
  • Vector algebra: vectors in two and three dimensions, unit and null vectors, dot and cross product, work done and moment of a force.

NDA English syllabus in GAT Part A

Part A of GAT is English for 200 marks, which means 50 questions at 4 marks each. The official note says this part checks how well you understand and use English, through grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text. In practice you will see spotting errors, sentence improvement, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, ordering of sentences, fill in the blanks and one or two reading passages.

English is the one part of GAT you can lift quickly with daily reading and grammar drills, and its 200 marks equal two thirds of the whole maths paper.

General knowledge in GAT Part B with weightage

Part B carries 400 marks through 100 questions. The official syllabus gives an approximate share for each area, which tells you how to divide your hours.

GAT Part B weightage as stated in the notification
SectionShare of Part BMain topics
Physics25%states of matter, density, pressure, motion, Newton's laws, work, energy, heat, sound, light, magnets, electricity, everyday devices
Chemistry15%physical and chemical change, compounds and equations, air and water, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, acids, bases, salts, atomic structure, valency
General science10%cells and tissues, human body, diseases and prevention, balanced diet, solar system, eclipses
History and freedom movement20%Indian history and culture, freedom struggle, Constitution and administration, world revolutions, United Nations
Geography20%earth and its movements, rocks, weathering, climate, winds, ocean currents, regional geography of India, ports and trade

A twelve week plan built around the marks

Maths decides most NDA results because it is a separate paper with its own minimum. Give it the first slot of every day.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: algebra, trigonometry and matrices in maths; grammar rules and 20 new words a day in English; physics basics.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: coordinate geometry, calculus and vectors; chemistry and general science; one reading passage a day.
  3. Weeks 9 to 10: statistics and probability; history and geography of India; start a news notebook for current events.
  4. Weeks 11 to 12: a full timed paper of each kind every other day, using the NDA previous year question papers, then analyse every wrong answer.

Kabir is in Class 12 with PCM and his board exams fall two months before NDA. He keeps his board revision of calculus and vectors as NDA maths practice, adds 40 timed maths questions on Sundays, and reads one chapter of Indian geography each weekday evening. After the boards he switches fully to mock papers.

Which books to use for NDA prep

NCERT textbooks are the backbone here. Class 11 and 12 maths covers almost every chapter in the list above, and Class 9 and 10 science, history and geography books cover most of Part B. Add any standard book of NDA style solved papers, a basic English grammar book with exercises, and a monthly current affairs summary. Keep the official syllabus of NDA exam printed and tick each topic as you finish it.

Always confirm the syllabus, marks and sectional minimums in the latest NDA and NA notification on the UPSC website before you finalise your plan.

If you searched for nda ka syllabus kya hai, the short answer is the two papers above plus the SSB stage.

Frequently asked questions

Is NDA maths harder than Class 12 board maths?

The topics are the same, but NDA questions are timed and objective, with 120 questions in 150 minutes. Speed and accuracy matter more than long working. Practising shortcuts for trigonometry, probability and coordinate geometry helps the most.

What is the NDA marking scheme for wrong answers?

Each wrong answer loses one third of that question's marks: 0.83 in maths and 1.33 in GAT. Questions left blank are not penalised. Guess only when you can rule out at least two options.

Is there a minimum mark in each NDA paper?

Yes. UPSC sets a minimum in each written paper along with the overall cut off, and the level can differ by session. The result notice for each session gives the exact rule, and our NDA cut off page tracks past values.

Is the NDA syllabus the same for Army, Navy and Air Force?

Yes, everyone writes the same two papers. The difference is in eligibility, since Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy entries need physics, chemistry and maths in Class 12. The SSB stage adds a pilot aptitude test for Air Force flying.

Does the NDA exam have a syllabus for the SSB interview?

There is no topic list for the SSB. It tests reasoning, picture perception, group tasks, psychology tests and a personal interview, so build fitness, communication and awareness of current events alongside the written prep.

How is NDA different from the CDS exam?

NDA is for candidates in or just after Class 12, while CDS is for graduates and has a different paper set. See the CDS syllabus if you are already in college.
