RRB ALP syllabus and exam pattern for CBT 1, CBT 2 and CBAT

Railway10th + ITI1/3 negativeUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The ALP syllabus of the Railway Recruitment Boards has three tested stages: CBT 1 with 75 questions in 60 minutes on maths, mental ability and general science; CBT 2 with a 100 question Part A and a 75 question trade Part B; and the CBAT, a computer-run test of memory, concentration and perception. Wrong answers in the CBTs cost one third of a mark.

The Assistant Loco Pilot post is the entry point to driving trains, so the board tests both technical basics from your ITI or diploma and the alertness a loco pilot needs. This page lays out each paper so you can plan by marks rather than by guesswork.

Selection stages at a glance

  1. CBT 1: a screening test. Its marks only decide who moves on to CBT 2.
  2. CBT 2: Part A marks count for merit; Part B is a qualifying trade paper.
  3. CBAT: a psychological aptitude test taken only by those shortlisted on Part A marks.
  4. Document verification and medical: you need medical standard A-1, which includes strict eyesight rules.

Final merit is built from CBT 2 Part A and CBAT together. The previous notice gave Part A 70 percent and CBAT 30 percent; the latest notice weights them equally, 50 percent each, so the aptitude test now matters as much as your Part A score.

RRB ALP CBT 1 exam pattern

MathematicsSplit not printed in the notice
Mental ability (reasoning)
General science (class 10 physics, chemistry, life science)
Total75 in 60 minutes

The pass bar is 40 percent of the marks for UR and EWS candidates, 30 percent for SC and non-creamy OBC applicants, while ST applicants need 25 percent. The rrb alp cbt 1 syllabus in the latest notice no longer has a general awareness block; earlier cycles had about 10 such questions, so the 75 questions now come from the other three sections.

The notice gives only the CBT 1 total, not a section split. Older papers were reported at roughly 20 maths, 25 reasoning and 20 science items; treat that as a guide, not a rule.

PartSubjectsQuestionsTimeRole
Part AMathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, basic science and engineering (no section split printed)10090 minCounts for merit
Part BYour ITI trade or engineering stream7560 minQualifying, 35 percent

Part A carries the same category-wise minimum percentages as CBT 1. Part B needs 35 percent for every category, and its marks do not add to merit, but you are out if you miss it. The board publishes the trade syllabus for Part B using the Directorate General of Training syllabus of each allied trade.

Detailed ALP syllabus by subject

  • Ratio, proportion and percentage; interest of both kinds; profit, loss and discount style sums
  • Work and time, speed and distance, pipes and cisterns, ages, calendar and clock
  • Mensuration and geometry, basic algebra and trigonometry, square roots, elementary statistics

Mental ability and reasoning

  • Analogies, alphabet and number series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations
  • Relationships, syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagrams, directions
  • Data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, classification
  • Statements with arguments and assumptions, analytical reasoning

General science (CBT 1)

  • Class 10 level physics and chemistry, plus life science basics

Basic science and engineering (Part A, 40 questions)

  • Engineering drawing basics such as views, projections, instruments and symbols for parts
  • Measurement and units, and the ideas of mass, density and weight
  • Energy, work and power; velocity and speed; temperature and heat
  • Simple machines and levers, plus basic electricity
  • Safety and health at work, environment education and IT literacy

General awareness

  • The last two notices dropped it from CBT 2 Part A, and the latest notice also drops it from CBT 1, so you no longer need a separate current affairs routine for ALP

CBAT: the aptitude test only ALP candidates take

CBAT has test batteries on abilities such as memory, following directions, concentration and perceptual speed. No marks are cut for wrong answers, and you can take it in Hindi or English. Each battery needs a T-score of 42 or more on its own; this is the same for all categories and cannot be relaxed. Missing one battery by a single point ends your candidature, even with a strong Part A score.

Candidates are called to CBAT in a multiple of vacancies (recent notices used eight times) based on Part A marks.

Where to focus first

Basic science and engineering is one of only three Part A subjects, and past papers have given it a large share of the 100 merit questions (the notice prints no split), so ITI holders gain by revising drawing, units, simple machines and basic electricity early. Maths and reasoning appear in both CBTs, so one round of preparation serves twice. General science of class 10 matters mainly in CBT 1.

Imran finished an electrician ITI in Bhopal and does rotating shifts at a repair workshop. He studies 90 minutes a day: 30 on maths, 30 on reasoning, 30 on the basic science and engineering list. On Sundays he solves one trade paper for Part B. Since his trade knowledge is fresh, Part B takes little time, and he can spend most effort on Part A.

RRB ALP syllabus in Hindi

Hindi medium readers can use this quick summary of CBT 1 and the ALP CBT 2 syllabus in Hindi.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBT 1 counted in the final ALP merit?

No. CBT 1 only screens candidates for CBT 2. Merit is built from CBT 2 Part A and the CBAT score, weighted equally under the current notice.

What is the alp cbt 2 syllabus for Part B?

Part B is a 75 question test on your own ITI trade or engineering stream, based on the national trade syllabus. You need 35 percent to qualify, and the marks do not add to merit.

Is there negative marking in CBAT?

No marks are deducted in CBAT. The hurdle is the minimum of 42 per battery.

Can I write the ALP exam in Hindi?

Yes. You choose the CBT language when you apply, from Hindi, English and a list of regional languages, and CBAT is in Hindi and English.

Which subject has the most marks in Part A?

The notice does not print a section split. Past papers suggest basic science and engineering takes the biggest share, so give it the most time.

Has the alp exam syllabus changed recently?

Yes. The latest notice removes general awareness from CBT 1 and gives CBT 2 Part A and CBAT equal 50 percent weight in final merit, up from 30 percent for CBAT. Maths, reasoning, science and the trade paper remain.
