The NEET syllabus draws on the three sciences you study in senior secondary school, physics, chemistry and biology, and the National Medical Commission (NMC) is the body that fixes it while the National Testing Agency (NTA) runs the test. The latest version kept the same chapters as the previous cycle, so if you have been studying from the NCERT books, nothing you learnt has been wasted.
This page sets out the paper pattern, the NEET marking scheme, every unit for each subject, and a sensible way to split the months you have left. Biology carries half the marks, which shapes almost every decision you make.

How the NEET UG exam works
There is only one written stage. You sit a single paper, and your score and rank from it decide whether you qualify and which seats you can reach in counselling for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and veterinary courses. Nobody faces an interview or a second test.
Because everything rides on one sitting, the way you handle time and guessing matters as much as how much you know. Questions are multiple choice with four options and exactly one correct answer, and you mark it with a ball pen on the OMR sheet. Once shaded, an answer cannot be changed.
NEET marking scheme and paper pattern
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
| Botany | 45 | 180 |
| Zoology | 45 | 180 |
| Total | 180 | 720 |
All 180 questions are compulsory; the old optional section with internal choice is no longer part of the paper. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong one costs 1 mark, while a blank gets zero. Marking two bubbles for one question counts as a wrong answer. The standard paper runs for 3 hours, though the re-exam in the latest cycle gave candidates 15 extra minutes, so always read the timing on your own admit card.
NEET syllabus for physics
Physics has 20 units spread across both classes. The class 11 portion leans on mechanics, while class 12 is heavy on electricity, magnetism and modern physics.
- Physics and measurement, kinematics, laws of motion
- Work, energy and power; rotational motion; gravitation
- Properties of solids and liquids, thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases
- Oscillations and waves
- Electrostatics, current electricity, magnetic effects of current and magnetism
- Electromagnetic induction and alternating currents, electromagnetic waves
- Optics, dual nature of matter and radiation, atoms and nuclei
- Electronic devices and experimental skills
For a chapter by chapter breakdown with subtopics, see the NEET physics syllabus.
Chemistry units you need to cover
Chemistry splits neatly into three blocks, and many toppers treat them as three separate subjects with their own revision rhythm.
Physical chemistry
Some basic concepts, atomic structure, chemical bonding and molecular structure, chemical thermodynamics, solutions, equilibrium, redox reactions and electrochemistry, chemical kinetics.
Inorganic chemistry
Classification of elements and periodicity, p block elements, d and f block elements, coordination compounds.
Organic chemistry
Purification and characterisation of organic compounds, basic principles of organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, compounds with halogens, oxygen and nitrogen, biomolecules, and principles related to practical chemistry.
The full topic list sits on our NEET chemistry syllabus page.
Biology: botany and zoology
Ninety of the 180 questions come from biology, split equally between plant and animal topics. The units follow the NCERT chapters closely.
- Class 11: diversity in the living world, structural organisation in plants and animals, cell structure and function, plant physiology, human physiology
- Class 12: reproduction, genetics and evolution, biology and human welfare, biotechnology and its applications, ecology and environment
Students often ask whether a particular animal or diagram is still in. Our NEET biology syllabus lists the subtopics, and one common doubt is answered on is cockroach in NEET syllabus.
What to focus on first
Since botany and zoology together are worth 360 marks, a strong biology score is the base of any good rank. The questions in that section stick closely to NCERT lines, diagrams and examples, so reading the textbooks several times beats piling up extra material.
Chemistry is the next best scorer for most students because inorganic and much of organic reward memory and practice. Physics usually decides the gap between a good and a great score, as it needs both concepts and quick calculation. Do not drop a whole unit: with negative marking and no choice, a blind spot costs you twice.
A study plan built around this paper
- Map your books to the units. Tick each NMC unit against your class 11 and 12 NCERT chapters so you know exactly what is in and out.
- Finish class 11 early. Roughly half the syllabus comes from it, and it is the part school students tend to neglect in class 12.
- Practise under the real rules. Solve 180 questions in one sitting and mark yourself with plus 4 and minus 1, so your guessing habits are tested too.
- Use past papers. Work through the previous year NEET question papers to see how NCERT lines turn into options.
- Check where you stand. Compare your mock scores with the NEET cut off trends for your category.
As for books, the NCERT textbooks for physics, chemistry and biology are the core. Add one question bank per subject at most, and keep the official NMC syllabus beside you to avoid chapters that are not tested.
Where to find the official syllabus
The NMC publishes the syllabus as a notice, and the NTA links it in the information bulletin for each cycle on the NEET portal. Download it from there rather than relying on forwarded files, which are often old versions.
Before you register, also check that you meet the NEET eligibility rules on subjects, marks and age. Other medical and engineering tests are listed on our entrance exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
Is the NEET syllabus the same as the class 11 and 12 NCERT books?
Very close. The NMC units are built on the NCERT chapters for physics, chemistry and biology, so NCERT covers nearly everything. A few practical skill topics are listed separately, so check the official list too.
Has the NEET UG syllabus changed recently?
Reports on the latest NMC notice say no chapters were added or removed compared with the previous cycle. Still, read the current notice yourself before you plan.
What is the NEET marking scheme?
You get 4 marks for every correct answer and lose 1 mark for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions get zero. The maximum score is 720.
Are there optional questions in NEET?
No. All 180 questions are compulsory in the current pattern. The earlier format with a choice section has been dropped.
Can I write NEET in Hindi?
Yes. The NTA offers the paper in 13 languages, including Hindi. You pick the medium in the application form, so choose carefully and check it in the correction window if one opens.
Which subject should I study first for NEET?
Most students start with biology because it carries 360 of the 720 marks and is closely tied to NCERT text. Keep physics going in parallel, since it takes longest to build speed.
