The UPTET syllabus covers two papers of 150 one-mark questions each: Paper 1 for primary teaching (Classes 1 to 5) and Paper 2 for upper primary (Classes 6 to 8). Each one checks your grasp of how children learn, your Hindi and a second language, and then either maths and EVS (Paper 1) or a 60-mark subject block (Paper 2).

Read on for the section tables, the topic lists, the score you must reach, and a three-month routine weighted by marks. If you are still checking whether your degree or diploma lets you sit a paper, read UPTET eligibility first.

UPTET exam pattern at a glance

Think of UPTET as a licence rather than a job test. A pass makes you eligible for the state's teacher vacancies, and those posts are filled later through a separate selection such as the Super TET. Each paper is a pen and paper test answered on an OMR sheet, set in Hindi and English, with no penalty for a wrong answer.

Each paper runs for 150 minutes. Anyone aiming at primary and upper primary posts alike fills the form for each paper; the two are scheduled in different shifts.

Child development and pedagogy (both papers)

This 30-mark block is common to both papers, and it is where many candidates lose easy marks because they read it like general knowledge. It asks you to apply ideas to classroom situations.

  • Child development: meaning, stages and principles; physical, mental, emotional, social and language development; heredity and environment
  • Learning: factors that affect it, learning curves and plateaus, motivation, memory and forgetting
  • Theories you must know well: Thorndike's trial and error and his laws, Pavlov's classical conditioning, Skinner's operant conditioning, Kohler's insight learning, Piaget and Vygotsky on how children think
  • Teaching: principles, methods, maxims and core teaching skills; teaching aids
  • Inclusive education: learners with special needs, gender and language diversity, guidance and counselling
  • Assessment: continuous and comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic and remedial teaching

UPTET syllabus for Language I and Language II

Hindi is compulsory as Language I. For Language II you choose English, Urdu or Sanskrit. Each language section has two parts: grammar and comprehension, and language teaching.

Hindi

  • Unseen passage, varnamala, matra, sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay
  • Paryayvachi, vilom, anekarthi shabd, ling, vachan, kaal, vachya
  • Muhavare and lokoktiyan, alankar, punctuation, famous writers and their works
  • Pedagogy: learning and acquisition of language, listening and speaking skills, the role of grammar, remedial teaching

UPTET English syllabus

  • Unseen passage, articles, parts of speech, subject and predicate
  • Tenses, active and passive voice, singular and plural, gender, punctuation
  • Kinds of sentences and word formation
  • Teaching English: methods, the four skills, teaching aids and evaluation

Sanskrit and Urdu

Sanskrit covers an unseen passage, shabd roop, dhatu roop, sandhi, samas, karak, pratyay and well-known poets. Urdu covers an unseen passage, grammar, idioms, major poets and prose forms. Both include a pedagogy part like Hindi.

Subject topics: maths, EVS and the Paper 2 block

Paper 1 mathematics

Number operations, fractions and decimals, LCM and HCF, unitary method, percentage, profit and loss, simple interest, basic geometry (lines, angles, triangles, circles), measurement of length, weight, capacity, time and temperature, perimeter, area and volume, money, calendar and data handling, plus how children learn maths and error analysis.

Paper 1 environmental studies

Family, food, shelter, water, health and hygiene, plants and animals, transport and communication, local occupations, rivers, mountains and forests, national symbols, local bodies and basic governance, environmental protection, and EVS teaching methods such as activity-based and integrated learning.

UPTET Paper 2 syllabus: the 60-mark block

Choose one of two options. Option A, maths with science, covers upper primary level number system, algebra, geometry, mensuration and data, together with everyday science: matter, living things and their functions, health and nutrition, force, motion, light, electricity and natural resources. Option B, social studies, covers history, geography, Indian Constitution and civics, and basic economics at the Class 6 to 8 level. Both options include teaching methods for the subject. Questions sit at the level of the school textbooks for those classes.

What to focus on for the most marks

The paper rewards breadth. Every section is worth the same in Paper 1, so a weak subject costs as much as a strong one earns. A few patterns help you choose where to spend time.

  • Pedagogy questions repeat ideas. Learning theories, inclusive classrooms and evaluation return in different wording, so understanding beats memorising.
  • Language sections are fast. Grammar questions take seconds when your basics are firm; keep the comprehension for last within the section.
  • Teaching method questions sit inside every subject. Expect several questions in maths, EVS and science about how you would teach a topic, not just the topic itself.
  • No negative marking. Never leave a bubble empty; an informed guess can only help.
Topic lists can be revised with each notification. Before you finalise your plan, match this list with the syllabus published by UPESSC on its website.

A 12-week UPTET study plan

This plan assumes about three hours a day. Stretch it if you work.

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: pedagogy first, one learning theory or concept per day, with ten practice questions each evening.
  2. Weeks 4 to 6: Hindi grammar and your second language; read one unseen passage daily.
  3. Weeks 7 to 9: maths and EVS for Paper 1, or your chosen 60-mark block for Paper 2, using Class 1 to 8 school textbooks.
  4. Weeks 10 to 12: full 150-question papers under a 150-minute timer, then revise only the sections where you scored below 60%.
Neha completed her D.El.Ed last year and plans to sit Paper 1 only. Her maths is strong, but EVS felt vague. She read the Class 3 to 5 EVS books chapter by chapter and noted one teaching method per chapter. In her mock papers EVS rose from 17 to 24, which pushed her total past 90.

Books and study material

Start with the state's own school textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 and NCERT books for the same classes; most content questions sit at that level. For pedagogy, a standard child development and pedagogy textbook from your teacher training course is enough. Past UPTET papers are the best guide to wording, and the CTET syllabus overlaps heavily if you want extra practice material.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UPTET exam pattern?

Each paper has 150 multiple choice questions of one mark each, to be answered in 2 hours 30 minutes on an OMR sheet. There is no negative marking. Paper 1 has five 30-mark sections and Paper 2 has three 30-mark sections plus a 60-mark subject section.

How many marks do I need to pass UPTET?

The pass line is 60% for the general category, so 90 out of 150. Reserved category candidates need 55%. Clearing the test makes you eligible to apply for teacher posts; it is not a job offer by itself.

Is the UPTET Paper 2 syllabus different from Paper 1?

The pedagogy and two language sections are common. Paper 2 drops the separate maths and EVS sections and adds a 60-mark block of either mathematics plus science or social science, pitched at the Class 6 to 8 level.

UPTET ka syllabus kya hai?

Put simply, it lists the topics for the two papers: child development and pedagogy, Hindi, a second language, and then maths and EVS for Paper 1 or the 60-mark subject block for Paper 2. The Hindi summary above gives the same outline.

Can I take UPTET in English?

Question papers are set in Hindi and English. Hindi stays compulsory as the first language, and you choose English, Urdu or Sanskrit as Language II.

Is UPTET harder than CTET?

The structure is close: both have 150 questions, two levels and no negative marking. UPTET makes Hindi compulsory and leans on state textbook content, while CTET follows NCERT closely. Our teaching exams hub compares them, and many aspirants prepare for both together because the pedagogy and subject topics overlap a lot.

How long is the UPTET certificate valid?

Recent reports describe it as valid for life, in line with the national rule for teacher eligibility tests. Confirm the validity clause in the notification you apply under.
