A data science syllabus rests on four pillars: mathematics and statistics, programming (mostly Python, SQL and sometimes R), machine learning, and the practical work of cleaning, analysing and presenting real data, finished off with a project. Every university writes its own detailed course list, but almost all of them follow this order from foundations to applications.
Below you will see how the main course types compare, what a typical semester plan looks like, the topics inside each subject, the published structure of the IIT Madras online BS, and what to study in school if you want to take this path.

Which data science course are you looking at
| Course | Length | Usual entry route | Syllabus flavour |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Sc in data science (or statistics and data science) | 3 years, or 4 with honours | Class 12 marks, or CUET at central universities | Heavier on statistics and mathematics |
| B.Tech CSE (data science) or similar | 4 years | JEE Main or a state engineering test | Computer science core plus data electives |
| BCA with data analytics | 3 or 4 years | Class 12 marks or a university test | Programming and applications |
| M.Sc or M.Tech in data science | 2 years | Graduation, often with a university or national test | Advanced modelling and research |
| IIT Madras BS in data science and applications | Flexible, level by level | The institute's own qualifier process | Online, with in person exams |
The names change from college to college, so always open the department's own course list before you apply. Two B.Sc programmes with the same title can differ a lot in how much coding they include.
Data science syllabus semester by semester
The layout below is typical of a three year undergraduate programme. Your university may order things differently or add a fourth honours year with research.
| Year | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| First year | Calculus, discrete mathematics, descriptive statistics, programming in Python, computer fundamentals, communication skills |
| Second year | Linear algebra, probability and inference, data structures and algorithms, database management with SQL, data wrangling and visualisation |
| Third year | Machine learning, regression and time series, big data tools, an elective such as deep learning or text analytics, ethics and data privacy, final project |
Mathematics and statistics topics
- Linear algebra: vectors, matrices, systems of equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, singular value decomposition
- Calculus for optimising models: derivatives, partial derivatives, gradients, gradient descent, convex functions
- Probability: random variables, the normal, binomial and Poisson distributions, expectation, the central limit theorem
- Inferential statistics: sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, t tests and chi square tests, analysis of variance
- Regression: simple and multiple linear regression, logistic regression, checking assumptions
Students who skip the maths usually hit a wall in the machine learning courses later, because every model there is built from these ideas.
Programming, databases and tools
- Python: data types, loops, functions, files, object oriented basics, and libraries for arrays, data frames and charts
- SQL: table design, joins, grouping, subqueries, indexing, normalisation
- R in statistics heavy courses
- Data structures and algorithms: lists, stacks, trees, hashing, sorting, searching, complexity
- Working tools: version control, the Linux command line, notebooks, spreadsheets
- Big data basics: distributed storage and processing, cloud platforms
Machine learning and applied modules
- Supervised learning: k nearest neighbours, decision trees, random forests, support vector machines, model evaluation and cross validation
- Unsupervised learning: k means and hierarchical clustering, principal component analysis
- Deep learning: neural networks, backpropagation, convolutional and recurrent networks, an introduction to large language models in newer courses
- Applications: natural language processing, recommendation systems, forecasting, image analysis
- Data storytelling: dashboards, chart design, presenting findings to people who are not technical
- Ethics: bias in data, privacy, consent and responsible use
The IIT Madras BS course list as a reference
This online programme publishes a clear structure that many students use as a yardstick. It is built in levels, and you can exit with a certificate, diploma or degree at each one.
- Foundation (8 courses, 32 credits): Mathematics for Data Science I and II, Statistics for Data Science I and II, Computational Thinking, Programming in Python, English I and II
- Diploma in Programming (6 courses and 2 projects, 27 credits): database management, data structures and algorithms in Python, application development I and II, Java, system commands
- Diploma in Data Science (6 courses and 2 projects, 27 credits): machine learning foundations, techniques and practice, business data management, tools in data science, plus a business analytics or deep learning track
- Degree level: software engineering, software testing, deep learning, search methods for problem solving, professional growth, and a wide set of electives
Course names and credits can change from term to term, so treat this as a snapshot of the published list.
Preparing in school and getting admission
Mathematics in class 12 is the one subject most data science courses insist on, and a good grip on algebra, calculus and probability from that year saves you months later. If your school offers computer science, the CBSE class 12 computer science syllabus already covers Python programming and SQL queries. For central university B.Sc seats, look at the CUET syllabus; for engineering seats with a data science branch, start with the JEE Main syllabus.
Making the most of the syllabus once you join
Marks in the semester exam matter, but employers and master's admissions look closely at what you have built. Keep a small portfolio: two or three projects on real Indian data, such as rainfall, crop prices or public transport use, each with clean code and a short written summary. For a later master's at an IIT, check the GATE DA syllabus, the GATE paper built around data science, and the IIT syllabus page for other routes.
Frequently asked questions
Is maths compulsory for a data science course?
For most B.Sc and B.Tech programmes, yes: mathematics in class 12 is part of the entry rule. Some BCA or management style analytics courses accept other streams, but you will still study statistics and linear algebra inside the course.
Which programming languages are in the syllabus of data science?
Python is the main language almost everywhere, with SQL for databases. Statistics heavy courses add R, and some programmes include Java or C for computer science basics.
Is data science hard for a commerce student?
It is manageable if you build up the maths first. Commerce students with mathematics in class 12 often do well, since business statistics and spreadsheets overlap with the early semesters.
How long is a data science degree?
An undergraduate degree takes 3 years, or 4 with an honours or research year under the newer UGC framework. B.Tech courses take 4 years and master's courses usually 2.
Does the syllabus include projects and internships?
Almost all programmes end with a capstone project, and many include an internship. These count for credits and are often what interviewers ask about first.
Is there an entrance exam for B.Sc data science?
It depends on the university. Central universities usually admit through CUET, IIT Madras uses its own qualifier, and many private and state universities admit on class 12 marks or their own tests.
