HS 2nd Year Syllabus for Assam Class 12

State examsAssam class 12Three streamsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The HS 2nd year syllabus is the class 12 course of the Assam higher secondary system, now run by Division II of the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), the body that took over the work of the old Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). You study English and a Modern Indian Language (or Alternative English) as compulsory papers, plus elective subjects from the Arts, Science or Commerce stream, and sit the HS final examination when the session closes.

A revised class 12 curriculum takes effect from the current session, following the revision of HS 1st year a year earlier. It changes how many subjects you take and how you pass, so read this page with your school's subject list in hand.

Who sets the HS course in Assam now

For years the HS 1st and 2nd year courses were managed by AHSEC. That council has since been merged into the Assam State School Education Board, which handles school level exams through divisions; Division II looks after higher secondary. The council's old web address still hosts the syllabus files, question papers and circulars, so you will see both names on documents.

For students, little changes in day to day terms. Your HS 2nd year marksheet comes from ASSEB Division II, and colleges, CUET and other entrance bodies accept it as a class 12 qualification.

Subject structure of the revised HS 2nd year syllabus

Under the revised curriculum announced by ASSEB Division II, each Arts, Science or Commerce student takes six subjects.

Subject structure under the revised curriculum
GroupSubjectsCount
Compulsory language 1English1
Compulsory language 2One MIL (Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu and others) or Alternative English1
ElectivesChosen from your stream and the open list4
Total6

The board treats you as a Science student if you take Physics, Chemistry or Biology, and as a Commerce student if you take Accountancy together with Business Studies. The older vocational stream has been replaced by skill subjects that sit alongside academic electives.

Elective subjects by stream

Science

  • Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics
  • Statistics, Computer Science and Application where your school offers it

Commerce

  • Accountancy and Business Studies (the pair that defines the stream)
  • Economics, Finance, Mathematics

Arts

  • History, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Education, Sociology
  • Swadesh Adhyayan, Logic and Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology, Physical Education, Home Science
  • Advanced languages such as Advance Assamese, and classical languages such as Sanskrit

Newer options include Financial Literacy and Sign Language, offered only where trained teachers are available. Not every school runs every subject, so the list your principal approves is what you can actually take.

Pass marks and grades in the HS final

The revised rules reported by the board change how you pass:

  • You need 33 percent in aggregate across your subjects.
  • You must pass both English and the MIL or Alternative English paper.
  • You may fail one of the four electives and still pass overall if the aggregate rule is met.
  • In a subject with a practical or project part, the theory part and the practical or project part each need 33 percent on their own.
  • Subject wise grades are shown along with marks in the HS final.

Older guides quote a 30 percent pass mark and a higher practical threshold, which applied before the revision. Check the pass rules printed in the current regulations or ask your school before relying on any figure.

Theory, practical and project marks

Most papers are of 100 marks. How those marks split depends on the subject.

Marks split in common HS 2nd year subjects
SubjectTheoryPractical or project
Physics, Chemistry, Biology7030 practical
Business Studies8020 project
MathematicsRevised syllabus with project work added; see the subject PDF
Other subjectsAs set out on the front page of each subject syllabus

Science and commerce papers broadly follow the content of the NCERT class 12 books, with some Assam specific chapters. Sanskrit and Bihu also received revised syllabi this session.

Example: biology unit marks

Biology shows how a subject syllabus is laid out. The 70 mark theory paper (3 hours) is divided between botany and zoology.

HS 2nd year biology theory, current session
UnitBotanyZoology
Reproduction58
Genetics and evolution512
Biology in human welfare45
Biotechnology121
Ecology (includes bio-resources of Assam)99

The practical carries 30 marks, 15 each for botany and zoology, with the record book counted inside each half. Notice how biotechnology is weighted heavily on the botany side and genetics on the zoology side; build your revision around such weights in every subject.

Planning the year around the syllabus

  1. April to July: finish the high weight units of each elective first, and start practical records early so they are not rushed.
  2. August to October: cover the lighter chapters left over, then take the school's test exam seriously as a dress rehearsal.
  3. November to January: solve past HS final papers from the board's site, and practise the two compulsory language papers, which you cannot afford to fail.

Rituparna, a science student in Jorhat, also wants to write NEET. She matches each HS biology unit with the NEET list, so a single pass through each chapter prepares her for both, and keeps Sundays for the Assamese paper, which she must pass separately.

If you plan entrance exams, compare your electives with the NEET syllabus, the JEE Main syllabus, or check the CUET UG syllabus.

Why the HS course changed

The revision was designed around the National Education Policy, which pushes for flexible subject choice, skill subjects and grades alongside marks. Our NEP syllabus page explains those ideas. The CBSE class 12 syllabus is a useful comparison with the national board; for other state boards, visit the school boards section.

Frequently asked questions

Is HS 2nd year the same as class 12?

Yes. In Assam, HS 1st year is class 11 and HS 2nd year is class 12. The HS final examination at the end of the second year is the state's class 12 board exam.

Who conducts the HS 2nd year exam now that AHSEC has merged?

Division II of the Assam State School Education Board conducts it. Many notices and syllabus files still sit on the old AHSEC website address.

How many subjects do I take in HS 2nd year?

Under the revised curriculum, six: English, an MIL or Alternative English, and four electives. Your school may offer a fixed set of electives per stream.

Can I fail one subject and still pass HS 2nd year?

As per the revised rules, you can fail one of the four electives and still pass if your aggregate reaches 33 percent. You must still pass both compulsory language papers.

Where are the subject wise HS syllabus files?

On the HS 2nd year syllabus section of the board's website, with a separate PDF per subject. Read its first page for the marks split and question pattern.

Does the HS 2nd year science syllabus match NCERT?

Broadly, yes, for physics, chemistry and biology, with a few Assam specific chapters such as bio-resources of Assam in biology. Use the board's PDF to confirm which chapters are included.
