The Haryana group D syllabus is one paper of 100 objective questions pitched at class 10 level: three quarters of it covers general awareness, science, reasoning, maths, English and Hindi, and one quarter is general knowledge of Haryana. You sit this paper as the Common Eligibility Test (CET) for Group D, which HSSC uses to fill posts such as peon, helper, chowkidar, mali and sweeper across state departments.
Because there is no second written stage for most Group D posts, your CET score decides almost everything. That makes the Haryana GK block, worth a full 25 marks, the part where serious candidates pull ahead. Below you will find the Haryana group D exam pattern, what to read for every section, the rule changes you should know about and a plan you can follow from home.

Where the Haryana group D syllabus fits in hiring
Haryana moved its Group C and Group D hiring to a common test model. For Group D, the CET is the main filter: you write one paper, and the commission then allots posts from the merit it builds on that score, along with your preferences and category, followed by document checks.
- The last Group D CET was held offline over two days in two shifts, with question booklets in Hindi and English.
- Your CET result is used for later Group D advertisements as long as it stays valid, so a good score can serve more than one round.
How long a score stays valid and how posts are allotted are set in each CET notice, so read that part closely. For the HSSC side of the same recruitment, including notices and post lists, see the HSSC group D syllabus page.

English and Hindi: grammar at school level
English (10 marks): articles, prepositions and tenses, finding the incorrect part of a sentence, blanks to complete, synonym and antonym pairs, single words for phrases, common idioms, voice change, and one brief unseen passage.
Hindi (10 marks): sandhi and samas, prefixes and suffixes (upsarg, pratyay), synonyms and opposites, gender and number, muhavare and lokoktiyan, correcting sentences and spellings, and questions on well known Hindi writers. Many candidates from Hindi medium schools finish this block fastest, so do not skip revision of the rules.
General knowledge of Haryana: the 25 mark block
This section is what separates a selection score from an average one. Prepare these areas with a Haryana specific map in front of you:
- History: Indus sites such as Rakhigarhi and Banawali, the battles of Panipat, the role of Haryana in 1857, formation of the state on 1 November 1966
- Geography: districts and divisions, rivers (Yamuna, Ghaggar, Markanda), Aravalli hills, soils, climate, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks
- Economy: major crops, dairy and livestock, industrial towns, state schemes in current news
- Polity: the governor, assembly, panchayati raj in the state, district administration
- Culture: folk dances, festivals and fairs, dress, dialects, Haryanvi literature and music, sports persons from the state
- Current affairs: recent schemes, appointments, awards and events in Haryana
Rule changes that affect your final score
- Qualifying marks: in the last Group D CET, general candidates needed 50 percent and reserved category candidates 40 percent to be counted as qualified.
- Bonus marks removed: the earlier 5 percent weightage for socio economic criteria was struck down by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Supreme Court upheld that order, and the state then amended the CET rules to drop those marks. Merit now rests on your test score.
- Teaching posts and some lower posts: the amended CET rules leave out teaching posts and certain Group D posts with a qualification below matric, which follow their own process.
Eligibility for the last cycle was matric pass, with Hindi or Sanskrit studied up to matric, and an age range of 18 to 42 for the general category. Relaxations apply for reserved groups of Haryana. Confirm all of this in the latest notification before you fill the form.
Ten weeks to a strong CET Group D score
- Weeks 1 to 3: Haryana GK every day for an hour, plus maths chapters from your class 8 to 10 NCERT books.
- Weeks 4 to 6: science and Indian GK from NCERT, reasoning practice of 20 questions a day.
- Weeks 7 and 8: Hindi and English: one rule a day, then 15 practice items on it.
- Weeks 9 and 10: full 100 question mocks in 105 minutes on a printed OMR sheet, then a line by line look at each mistake.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an interview for Haryana group D posts?
Haryana does not interview Group D candidates under the CET model. Selection runs on CET merit, post preferences and document verification, though you should read each advertisement in case a particular post adds a test.
How many marks is Haryana GK in the group D paper?
25 out of 100 in the last cycle. It is the largest single section, which is why toppers usually spend the most time on it.
What score do I need just to qualify in CET Group D?
In the last cycle general category candidates needed 50 percent and reserved categories 40 percent. Clearing that line puts you on the list, but the score that wins a post tends to sit higher.
Do I get extra marks for socio economic criteria?
Not any more. The courts struck down the 5 percent bonus and Haryana amended its CET rules to remove it, so every candidate is ranked on the test score alone.
I have passed class 12 or hold a degree. Can I still apply for group D?
Yes. The minimum is matric, and a higher qualification does not stop you from applying, as long as you also meet the Hindi or Sanskrit and age conditions in the notice.
What is the time limit for the CET Group D paper?
The last Group D CET ran for 1 hour 45 minutes per shift. Your hall ticket for the next CET will state its own timing.
