KVS Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Tier 1 and Tier 2

TeachingPRT, TGT, PGTKVS and NVSUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The KVS syllabus in the latest recruitment is split over a pair of written stages: a shared Tier 1 of 100 questions for 300 marks that screens candidates, and a Tier 2 paper written for your own post, followed by a 100 mark interview for teaching and senior posts. CBSE ran the exam jointly for the Kendriya Vidyalayas and the Navodaya schools, so one KVS NVS syllabus now covers both school systems.

The last combined notice offered 14,967 posts across the two systems, from PRT up to principal, plus non teaching jobs. Here you get the shared Tier 1 topics, the Tier 2 layout, what changes between PRT, TGT and PGT, and a plan for dividing your months between screening practice and subject study.

How the KVS NVS selection runs

  1. Tier 1: a single screening paper for teaching posts, built from general sections. Clearing it earns a Tier 2 seat, and after that its score is set aside.
  2. Tier 2: a paper set separately for each post and subject, such as PRT, TGT maths or PGT chemistry.
  3. Interview: 100 marks for teaching posts, principals, vice principals and several officer posts.
  4. Document verification and medical: before the offer letter.

For interview posts, written marks make up 85 parts of every hundred in the final list, and the interview supplies the remaining 15. Non teaching posts follow other routes: stenographer and junior secretariat assistant candidates face a skill test after Tier 2, while posts like assistant section officer, lab attendant and MTS are ranked on Tier 2 marks alone.

Here is what the KVS NVS tier 1 syllabus usually tests inside each section:

  • Reasoning: odd one out, alphabet and number series, coding and decoding, seating and ranking, family trees, direction sense, statements with conclusions and mirror or paper folding figures.
  • Numeric ability: simplification, HCF and LCM, percentage, profit and discount, ratio and mixtures, averages, interest, time, speed and work, and reading small bar charts.
  • Computer literacy: input and output devices, storage, operating systems, word processors and spreadsheets, internet terms, email etiquette and safe use online.
  • General knowledge: recent national and world events, education schemes, Indian history, geography, Constitution and everyday science.
  • Languages: gap filling, finding the error in a line, word meanings, idioms and one unseen paragraph, set once in English and once in your chosen Indian language, which for most candidates is Hindi.

Each slip takes back one third of the reward for a correct response, which means three bad guesses erase a good answer. Mark a bubble only after eliminating two of the four choices.

Questions come bilingual, Hindi alongside English, except for language posts such as PGT modern Indian language and the NVS third language TGT, which use that language. Since you write by hand in the descriptive part, practise finishing ten answers in about 50 minutes and leave the rest of the time for the 60 objective items.

Tier 2 patterns for officer and non teaching posts differ from the table above. The newest notice carries a post wise annexure describing each paper; read yours there before building a plan.

KVS tier 2 syllabus by post

Every teaching Tier 2 paper mixes two blocks: the subject itself and the craft of teaching it. How deep the subject goes depends on the level.

What the subject block covers
PostClasses taughtSubject depth
PRT1 to 5Primary maths, EVS and languages, with child development
TGT6 to 10Secondary level content of your subject
PGT11 and 12Class 11 and 12 depth, stretching into college topics

For the teaching block, expect questions on how children learn, inclusion, planning a lesson, evaluating pupils, competency focused classrooms and NEP. Each level has a page of its own on this site: PRT, TGT and PGT, with subject topics listed.

Who can apply, in brief

Teaching posts in the latest notice
PostCore qualificationUpper age
PRTSenior secondary with 50 percent, a teacher training diploma or degree, CTET Paper I30
TGTBachelor's degree with 50 percent and the post's subjects, B.Ed, CTET Paper II35
PGTMaster's in the subject with 50 percent, plus B.Ed40

Reserved categories, women and serving employees get relaxation under central rules. Some special posts such as PGT computer science or TGT physical education have their own degree rules. If CTET is still pending, start with the CTET syllabus, since its pedagogy overlaps heavily with Tier 2.

A plan that respects both tiers

  • Phase one, about eight weeks: Tier 1 sections daily. One hour on reasoning or numeric ability, 20 minutes on computers, and a weekly current affairs revision. Sit a full 100 question test on an OMR sheet each weekend.
  • Phase two: once mock scores are steady, give most of your time to your post subject. Read NCERT books for your level, then the extra units in the annexure.
  • Phase three: pedagogy and answer writing. Draft a pair of handwritten answers daily on topics like assessing a slow learner or using an activity to teach fractions.
  • Interview: rehearse a short demonstration lesson and be ready to discuss classroom management.
Meera, a science graduate who finished her B.Ed two years ago and has since cleared CTET Paper II, and works days at a coaching centre near her home while aiming for TGT science. Her first Tier 1 mock showed strong GK but weak numeric ability, with eight wrong guesses costing her eight marks. She cut guessing, spent weekday mornings on arithmetic for six weeks, and then moved her evenings fully to class 9 and 10 science and writing pedagogy answers.

Books and official sources

For Tier 1, any reasoning and arithmetic workbook pitched at SSC level, with a slim computer awareness guide, covers the ground. Tier 2 rests on the NCERT books of the very classes you hope to teach, supported by your graduation or master's texts for TGT and PGT. Pedagogy needs only teacher training material from NCERT plus the NEP text and the school curriculum framework. The post wise syllabus annexures are released with each notice on cbse.gov.in and the KVS website. For other central and state teaching routes, visit the teaching exams hub, and see qualifying marks of past cycles on the KVS cut off page.

Frequently asked questions

Do PRT, TGT and PGT candidates write the same KVS tier 1 syllabus?

They do. In the latest recruitment the teaching posts shared one Tier 1 with the same six sections and 300 marks. The difference starts at Tier 2, where each post and subject gets its own paper.

Will a high Tier 1 score improve my KVS rank?

No. Tier 1 is a screening test. Candidates must clear it to reach Tier 2, and the merit for teaching posts is made from Tier 2 and the interview.

How does negative marking work across the KVS tiers?

Both tiers penalise errors. Tier 1 takes away one mark per error while a correct response earns three, and the Tier 2 objective items lose a quarter mark each. Nothing is deducted in the descriptive half.

Is the KVS and NVS syllabus the same?

In the latest combined recruitment CBSE held one exam for both, so the Tier 1 and the post wise Tier 2 papers were common. You state your preference for KVS or NVS while applying.

Do I need CTET for KVS?

Yes for PRT and TGT. PRT needs CTET Paper I and TGT needs CTET Paper II. PGT does not require CTET, but needs a master's degree and B.Ed.

What is in the KVS tier 2 syllabus for teachers?

It has a subject block at the level of the classes you will teach and a teaching block covering learning theories, assessment, inclusion and the national education policy. Ten questions are descriptive, so answer writing practice matters.
