The UP TET syllabus follows the same framework that every teacher eligibility test in India uses: 150 one mark questions per paper, a block on child psychology and teaching method, two language blocks, and then subject knowledge tied to the level you want to teach. Paper 1 covers the primary level and Paper 2 the upper primary level.
That common design comes from the national guidelines set by the National Council for Teacher Education, which is why the central CTET and the state TETs look so alike. This page explains the shared TET syllabus once, shows where Uttar Pradesh and other states add their own touches, and helps you decide what to study first.

How every TET is built
A TET is not a recruitment exam. It is a qualifying test, and passing it makes you eligible to be considered for teaching posts in schools covered by it. Central schools and many private CBSE schools look for CTET, while state government primary and upper primary schools look for the state's own TET or for CTET, depending on state rules.
You may sit Paper 1, Paper 2 or both. Someone with a D.El.Ed who wants to teach primary classes takes Paper 1; a graduate with a B.Ed aiming at classes 6 to 8 takes Paper 2. Many candidates take both to keep their options open.
UP TET exam pattern and the common TET layout
| Block | Primary paper | Upper primary paper |
|---|---|---|
| CDP block | 30 | 30 |
| First language | 30 | 30 |
| Second language | 30 | 30 |
| Maths | 30 | 60, either maths plus science or social studies |
| EVS | 30 | |
| All blocks | 150 | 150 |
Each correct answer earns a single mark within a two and a half hour sitting. In UPTET, Language I is Hindi and Language II is a choice such as English, Urdu or Sanskrit. In CTET you pick both languages from a longer list. Some state TETs swap in their own state language, so check the latest notification of the test you plan to take.
Child development and pedagogy
This block has the same aims in every TET, and more often than not it is the block that decides whether a candidate clears the pass line.
- What growth and development mean, and how they shape learning
- Nature versus nurture: the pull of family, peers and surroundings on a child
- Ideas from Piaget, Vygotsky and Kohlberg about stages, social learning and moral reasoning
- Progressive, child centred schooling; limits of IQ testing; Gardner's idea of many intelligences
- How language shapes thinking, gender roles learned in society, and why no two learners are alike
- Inclusion: teaching children with disabilities, children from deprived homes, and very able learners
- Thinking, curiosity, motivation, play, and reading a child's mistakes as clues
- Ongoing school based assessment, and assessment that feeds back into teaching
Paper 1 questions centre on young learners of about 6 to 11 years, while Paper 2 shifts towards early adolescents.
Language I and Language II
Each language block has two halves. One half is comprehension: unseen prose passages or poems with questions on meaning, grammar and vocabulary. The other half is pedagogy of language: how a child picks up a first and second language, why talk in class matters, the teaching of reading and writing, testing language skills, remedial work, and making use of textbooks and the many languages children bring from home. The TET English syllabus, when English is your second language, follows exactly this pattern, so practise both passages and teaching method questions.
Subject sections
Mathematics: numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, measurement, weight, time, volume, money, geometry, patterns and data handling, plus the pedagogy of maths such as error analysis and the place of maths in children's thinking. Paper 2 moves to algebra, ratio, integers, mensuration and higher level geometry.
Environmental studies (Paper 1): family and friends, food, shelter, water, travel, things we make and do, and the pedagogy of EVS with its integrated approach and activity based learning.
Paper 2 subject block: a candidate opting for maths and science gets 30 questions on each (food, materials, the living world, moving things, natural phenomena, natural resources, with science pedagogy). Social studies teachers answer 60 questions spread across history, geography, social and political life and the pedagogy of social science.
Content is drawn largely from the school curriculum for classes 1 to 8, which is why NCERT textbooks for these classes are the most efficient study material.
Where your marks come from
Since each section is 30 marks, no single section can carry you. The pass mark is 90 of 150 for general candidates in CTET and UPTET, while UPTET lowers the bar to 55% for reserved groups. Weak areas, often maths pedagogy or the second language, must at least be brought to a safe score. Pedagogy questions appear in every section, so learning the NCF ideas of learning by doing and child centred teaching helps across the paper.
Neha has a B.Ed and is taking Paper 2 social studies. Her mock tests show 24 in CDP, 25 in Hindi, only 14 in English and 38 in social studies. Rather than add more history, she spends three weeks on English comprehension and language teaching questions and lifts her English score to 21, which takes her total past 100.

Frequently asked questions
Tet ka syllabus kya hai, explained quickly, and what is the syllabus of TET exam papers made of?

Is the UP TET exam pattern the same as CTET?
Yes, the structure is the same: two papers, 150 one mark questions each, two and a half hours and no negative marking. The main difference is that UPTET fixes Hindi as Language I.
Which TET paper should I take?
Choose the primary paper for teaching the first five classes and the upper primary paper for the next three. You can take both if you meet the qualification for each.
Do TET papers deduct marks for wrong answers?
