UGC NET Syllabus: Paper 1, Paper 2 and the Exam Pattern

TeachingPostgraduate levelJRF and lectureshipUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The UGC NET syllabus has two parts: Paper 1, a common paper on teaching and research aptitude that every candidate takes, and Paper 2, which covers the postgraduate subject you choose from the 85 subjects listed in the latest notification. The test itself is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for the University Grants Commission, usually in a June cycle and a December cycle.

Both papers are taken in one sitting on a computer, so your preparation has to balance a general paper you can master in a few months with a subject paper that rests on everything you studied in your master's degree. This page sets out the units, the marks and a sensible way to divide your time.

How the NET exam is organised

UGC NET decides three things at once: whether you can be considered for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), whether you are eligible to be appointed as an Assistant Professor, and whether your score can be used for PhD admission. All three come from the same two papers. There is no interview, essay or descriptive answer in the test itself.

Paper 1 checks how well you think about teaching, research and information. Paper 2 checks depth in your own discipline, such as English, Commerce, Education, History or Law. The questions are multiple choice, and the paper for most subjects is shown in both English and Hindi, while language papers are set in that language.

All questions are compulsory and a wrong answer costs you nothing, so leaving a question blank never helps. You can move between the two papers within the 180 minutes, which means a strong Paper 1 candidate can finish it quickly and give more time to the subject paper.

Paper 1 syllabus: the ten units

The common paper is the part of the NET jrf syllabus that is identical for every subject, so it rewards steady practice. These are the ten units with the topics that matter most inside each one.

  1. Teaching Aptitude: levels of teaching (memory, understanding, reflective), learner characteristics, factors affecting teaching, teaching methods including online and blended modes, teaching support systems, evaluation systems and choice based credit system.
  2. Research Aptitude: meaning, types and characteristics of research, positivism and post positivism, methods, steps, thesis and article writing, research ethics.
  3. Comprehension: a passage followed by questions on it.
  4. Communication: meaning, types and characteristics, effective and mass media communication, barriers, classroom communication.
  5. Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude: number series, letter series, codes, relationships, fractions, time and distance, ratio, profit and loss, interest, averages.
  6. Logical Reasoning: structure of arguments, deductive and inductive reasoning, analogies, Venn diagrams, Indian logic including pramanas and the structure of inference.
  7. Data Interpretation: sources and classification of data, quantitative and qualitative data, graphical representation, data and governance.
  8. Information and Communication Technology: terms and abbreviations, internet, intranet, e-mail, audio and video conferencing, digital initiatives in higher education.
  9. People, Development and Environment: development goals, human and environment interaction, pollution, natural and energy resources, disasters, environmental protection laws and international agreements.
  10. Higher Education System: institutions of learning in ancient India, evolution of higher learning after independence, oriental and professional education, value education, policies, governance and administration.

How Paper 2 is built for your subject

Each Paper 2 has its own detailed syllabus, and after the UGC revision of the subject syllabi most of them are arranged in ten units that run from foundations to research methods. Because the content is set at master's level, your university notes and standard textbooks remain the base. The overview on our UGC NET Paper 2 syllabus page explains how to read any subject's document, and some subjects have their own pages, such as Commerce, History, Political Science and Law.

Download the exact subject syllabus from the NTA site before you buy anything. Units are sometimes renamed or merged when UGC revises a syllabus, and that file is what the paper setters follow.

UGC NET English syllabus in brief

English is one of the largest subjects by number of candidates, so it is worth spelling out. The ugc net english syllabus for Paper 2 is spread over these ten units:

  • Drama
  • Poetry
  • Fiction and short story
  • Non fictional prose
  • Language: basic concepts, theories and pedagogy, and English in use
  • English in India: history, evolution and futures
  • Cultural studies
  • Literary criticism
  • Literary theory after World War II
  • Research methods and materials in English

Expect questions on authors and works, chronology, matching of texts with movements, and short extracts you must identify. The theory and criticism units often decide the gap between an Assistant Professor score and a JRF score, so do not leave them for the last month.

Where to put your effort

NTA does not publish a fixed split of questions per unit. In past Paper 1 papers the ten units have usually been covered fairly evenly, with roughly five questions each, and the reading passage and the data table have each tended to carry a block of questions. That makes the scoring units (comprehension, data interpretation, mathematical and logical reasoning) the safest place to collect marks quickly.

For Paper 2, the weight sits wherever the syllabus is broad. Make a list of every unit, mark the ones you studied in your master's degree and the ones you did not, and give the unfamiliar ones fixed weekly slots.

Farhan cleared his MA in History last year and has five months before the December cycle. He spends six weeks finishing Paper 1 with daily mixed sets, then gives four months to Paper 2, using one weekend each month for a full 150 question mock in 3 hours.

A study plan that fits the two papers

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: print both syllabi, read your subject list unit by unit and note which books or notes cover each one.
  2. Weeks 3 to 8: finish Paper 1 theory units (teaching, research, communication, higher education) and practise reasoning and data sets every day for 40 minutes.
  3. Months 3 to 4: cover Paper 2 two units at a time, ending each pair with a 50 question unit test.
  4. Final month: solve earlier papers from our past NET papers page under the real 3 hour limit and revise only your error notebook.

Before you start, confirm on the UGC NET eligibility page which of the three outcomes (JRF, Assistant Professor, PhD) you can apply for, because that affects how high you need to aim. Past score levels are on the UGC NET cut off page.

Books and material, in plain terms

For Paper 1, a single comprehensive guide plus a book of solved papers is usually enough, along with the current policy documents on higher education and environment that the syllabus mentions. For Paper 2, the textbooks prescribed in good postgraduate programmes, standard histories of your discipline and NCERT books for any gaps in fundamentals serve better than thin question banks. Keep the official syllabus open on your desk and strike out each topic once read, so nothing outside it eats your time.

Syllabus files, the subject list and the pattern can change between cycles. Recheck everything in the information bulletin for the cycle you are applying to.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UGC NET syllabus the same for JRF and Assistant Professor?

Yes. The NET jrf syllabus and the Assistant Professor syllabus are the same two papers. What differs is the score needed: JRF cut offs are set higher than the Assistant Professor cut off in every subject and category.

How many units does Paper 1 have?

Paper 1 has ten units, from Teaching Aptitude to the Higher Education System. Past papers have spread questions across all ten, so skipping a unit is risky.

Is there negative marking in NTA UGC NET?

No. Each correct answer gets 2 marks and a wrong or blank answer gets zero, so attempt every question.

Where can I download the subject wise syllabus of UGC NET?

The syllabus of UGC NET for every subject is linked on the official NTA UGC NET website. Use that file rather than retyped versions, which can be outdated.

Can I take Paper 2 in Hindi?

For most subjects the question paper is bilingual in English and Hindi. Language subjects are set in the language concerned, so the Hindi subject paper is in Hindi and the English one in English.

How long does it take to cover the full syllabus?

Most candidates who have just finished a master's degree need four to six months of regular study. Paper 1 usually takes six to eight weeks, and the rest of the time goes to the subject paper and mock tests.
