What a Revenue Inspector does and how OSSSC selects one

A Revenue Inspector looks after a revenue circle under the tahasil office: checking land records, mutation and boundary cases, supervising the Amin and ARI below, and reporting on certificates and field enquiries. That job profile explains why the paper keeps returning to Odisha's geography, land, local bodies and administration.

Under the earlier combined advertisement that included RI, the route was:

1. Preliminary test: objective, used to shortlist. Its marks were not counted in the final merit.
2. Main written exam: objective and longer; the merit list was drawn from it.
3. Computer skill round: a practical test you must clear.
4. Document verification before appointment.

The newest combined advertisement keeps the prelims and the skill test, while coverage of it lists the mains as yet to be notified. Read the scheme of examination annexed to the advertisement you apply under.

OSSSC RI syllabus and exam pattern at the prelims stage

Both versions give 1 hour 30 minutes. Each wrong RI answer cost 0.33 mark in the earlier scheme and is reported as 0.25 mark in the latest one. With four options per question, blind guessing loses marks under either rule, so on RI mocks, practise striking out weak options first and commit only when a pair remains.

OSSSC RI mains syllabus and pattern

The sitting is three hours long, with the same 0.33 deduction per wrong answer reported for this stage. Reasoning drops out as a separate block while computer awareness jumps to 40 questions, the single biggest change between the two papers. The mains topics are the prelims topics taken deeper: harder arithmetic sets, more Odisha specific general studies and a full theory section on computers.

Mathematics

• Number system and simplification, HCF with LCM, age problems

• Discount, profit and loss; interest sums on deposits and loans
• Joint work and wages, tank and pipe sums, trains, boats and streams

General studies

• Recent events from Odisha first, then national and global, plus important days, books and authors
• Odisha's history, culture, dance and music, rivers, districts and economy
• Indian geography, polity and economic issues, India and its neighbours, world bodies
• Everyday science, inventions and discoveries

English

• Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, spelling, one word substitution, prepositions
• Spotting and correcting errors, sentence improvement and rearrangement, joining and transforming sentences
• Fill in the blanks, passage and paragraph completion

Odia

• Grammar, translation, composition, letter and essay type usage as asked in objective form

Computer

• Windows basics: creating, renaming, copying, moving and deleting files and folders
• Word processing: editing and formatting; presentations: building and formatting slides
• Spreadsheets: formatting, common functions and printing

Logical reasoning (prelims)

• Missing terms in series, coded messages, family trees, direction sense, ranking, seating, syllogism, analogies

The basic computer skill test

This round is practical: 50 marks in 30 minutes, and the latest advertisement fixes the pass mark at 40 percent. Score low here and the selection ends for you, even though the 50 marks never touch the merit list. The tasks follow the computer topics above, so a typical sitting asks you to format a short document, enter figures in a sheet and apply a formula, and put two or three slides together.

Since the RI mains also gives computer awareness 40 marks, an hour a week at a real keyboard serves both stages at once.

Who can apply for RI

Each RI advertisement fixes its own reference day for working out age. Knowledge of Odia is expected for all these posts. Diploma or +2 holders who cannot apply for RI can aim for ARI or Amin; their scheme is on our RI amin syllabus page.

A plan built for degree holders

Across prelims and mains, mathematics, general studies and English together hold 60 of 100 and then 120 of 180 marks. Start there, and fit Odia, reasoning and computers into short daily slots.

• Weeks 1 to 6: arithmetic chapter by chapter with 25 timed questions a day, and Odisha general studies from the state board's social science books.
• Weeks 7 to 10: English error spotting and sentence work, Odia grammar, and a reasoning set every other day.
• Weeks 11 to 12: full prelims mocks scored with the penalty.
• After prelims: computer theory for the 40 mark mains section, harder maths, and hands on practice for the skill test.
