BTSC JE syllabus and exam pattern for Bihar junior engineers

State examsDiploma levelBihar state jobsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The BTSC JE syllabus has two blocks packed into one online objective paper of 100 items: 80 on your engineering branch and 20 on general studies, answered in 2 hours. The Bihar Technical Service Commission recruits junior engineers in civil, mechanical and electrical streams for state departments, and its latest round, spread over three branch advertisements, offered 2,809 posts, the large majority in civil.

Below: the structure of the test, what each branch covers, how service experience can add to your merit, and a study order weighted toward the bigger block.

Selection steps for Bihar JE posts

BTSC selects junior engineers through a written test, then those on the shortlist have their papers checked and undergo a medical. There is no interview.

Coverage of the recent round says final ranking blends the written score and a weightage for eligible service experience. The figures quoted are 75 percent for the test and up to 25 marks for experience, at 5 marks per completed year. Which service counts, and how it is certified, is defined in the advertisement.

Experience weightage, negative marking and branch wise vacancies are set in each BTSC advertisement. Read the full notice for your branch on the Commission's website before you plan.

You get 2 hours, and every item is bilingual, in Hindi alongside English. With 120 minutes for 100 items the pace works out to roughly 72 seconds per item, which suits quick recall questions but leaves little room for long derivations. Practise solving numericals with standard formulas rather than first principles.

Coaching sources disagree on whether wrong answers attract a penalty in the latest cycle, so confirm the rule printed in your own advertisement rather than guess.

General studies part

Twenty marks seems small, yet in a test where toppers are separated by a few marks it matters. Expect questions on:

  • Bihar: its history, rivers, districts, culture, festivals and state schemes
  • India's past, its land, its constitution and its economy, at school depth
  • Everyday science and the scientific basis of common technology
  • Current events of national and state importance, sports and awards
  • Simple reasoning and arithmetic items, which some candidates report seeing

One hour a day for the last six weeks, mostly on Bihar facts and current affairs, usually covers this well.

BTSC JE syllabus for civil engineering

Civil carries by far the most posts, so competition is heaviest here. Plan around these areas:

  • Building materials and construction practice: bricks, cement, concrete, timber, mortar and masonry
  • Surveying: chain, compass, levelling, theodolite and contouring
  • Strength of materials and structural analysis basics
  • RCC and steel design by the limit state method
  • Soil mechanics and foundations
  • Hydraulics and fluid mechanics, with irrigation engineering
  • Highway and transport engineering
  • Environmental engineering: water supply and sanitation
  • Estimating, costing and valuation, and construction management

Mechanical and electrical topics

Mechanical

  • Mechanics of rigid bodies, stresses, strains and beams
  • Thermodynamics, heat transfer, IC engines, refrigeration and air conditioning
  • Fluid mechanics and hydraulic machines
  • Kinematics of mechanisms, gears, flywheels and design of machine elements
  • Manufacturing processes, production technology and industrial engineering

Electrical

  • Basic electrical concepts and network theory
  • Electrical machines: transformers, DC and AC machines
  • Power systems: generation, transmission and distribution
  • Measurement and instrumentation, and control systems
  • Power electronics and drives
  • Electrical estimation and costing

Where to spend most of your hours

Four fifths of the test is technical, so most of your time belongs to your diploma subjects. Within them, the chapters that run through several topics, such as strength of materials for civil and mechanical or network theory and machines for electrical, repay the effort many times over.

  1. Weeks 1 to 6: the heavy subjects of your branch, building a formula page for each.
  2. Weeks 7 to 10: remaining subjects, plus 50 practice MCQs a day.
  3. Weeks 11 and 12: general studies, Bihar facts, and two full timed mocks a week.
Ravi, a civil diploma holder working on a contract project in Gaya, could only study after 8 in the evening. He kept a printed formula sheet for each subject in his bag and revised one during lunch breaks, then used the evening for 40 questions from the same subject. In twelve weeks he had worked through every civil topic twice.

Books and similar exams

Your diploma textbooks and the state board course material are the best base, since the paper is set at diploma level. Pair them with any branch wise MCQ practice collection and a book on Bihar GK in the language you read fastest.

The technical content overlaps heavily with central exams, so you can prepare for the SSC JE syllabus and the RRB JE syllabus at the same time. Other Bihar jobs include the graduate level BSSC CGL syllabus, and more state level papers sit under state exams.
