The railway group D syllabus leads to one online paper: 100 questions in 90 minutes, with 30 on reasoning, 25 each on general science and mathematics, and 20 on general awareness with current affairs. After the CBT you face a Physical Efficiency Test, then document verification and a medical exam.
Level 1 posts include track maintainers, pointsmen and assistants in the engineering, mechanical, electrical and signal departments. The questions are set at about the class 10 level, but with over a crore applications in some cycles, speed and accuracy matter as much as knowing the topics. This page gives you the full RRB group D syllabus, section by section, and a plan to match.

- Time: 90 minutes, plus compensatory time for PwBD candidates who qualify for a scribe.
- Negative marking: one third of the mark for each wrong answer.
- Since the CBT runs across many days, scores are normalised shift to shift before any list.
- You can choose the paper language from the list given in the notice, which covers Hindi, English and many regional languages.
Mathematics topics
- Number system, BODMAS and simplification
- HCF and LCM of numbers; working with fractions and decimal values
- Percentages, ratio and proportion
- Mensuration of 2D and 3D shapes
- Work done by people or machines in a given time; trains, boats and speed sums
- Interest (simple and compound); gain, loss and discount
- Algebra basics, geometry and trigonometry
- Elementary statistics
- Square roots, ages, clocks, calendars, and pipes filling tanks
Most maths questions take one or two steps. A candidate who knows squares, cubes and percentage to fraction conversions can solve many of them in under 40 seconds.
RRB group D reasoning syllabus
Reasoning is the largest section with 30 questions, which makes it the best place to build a lead.
- Analogies, classification and alphabetical or number series
- Letter or number codes; symbol based maths operations
- Relationships, directions and seating arrangement
- Syllogism and Venn diagrams
- Jumbling and arrangement of words
- Data interpretation and data sufficiency
- Conclusions and decision making, statements with arguments and assumptions
- Similarities and differences, analytical reasoning
RRB group D science syllabus
The science section stays at matric standard across its three branches. The NCERT science books of classes 9 and 10 are the main source.
- Physics: how bodies move, Newton's laws, energy and the work it does, gravity, sound waves, light with mirrors, lenses and the eye, current electricity and magnetism from currents.
- Chemistry: states of matter, what atoms are made of, molecules and formulae, types of reactions, acid and base behaviour, everyday salts, the reactivity of metals, carbon chemistry and the periodic table.
- Life sciences: cells and tissues, how living things are classified, the organ systems of our body, diet and health, common illnesses and how to prevent them, hormones and nerves, reproduction, inheritance and ecology.
Science questions in Level 1 papers are mostly direct facts and simple concepts, with a few small numericals from physics.
General Awareness and Current Affairs
The notice lists current affairs in science and technology, sports, culture, personalities, economics, politics and any other subject of importance. In practice, expect:
- Indian and world news of roughly the last six to eight months
- Government schemes, awards, summits and appointments
- Static GK on India's past, its map, the Constitution and the economy
- Railway related facts and important days
Twenty questions is a small share, so do not let GA take more than about a fifth of your study time.

Searching for the rrb group d syllabus in Hindi, or group d ka syllabus? The paragraph below gives the same outline in Hindi.

The PET is qualifying. It adds nothing to your marks, but you must pass it to stay in the process. Standards for the PET are restated in every notice, so look them up again when a new one is out. Detailed age and qualification rules are on our RRB group D eligibility page.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions come in the Level 1 CBT?
There are 100 one mark items in 90 minutes: 25 science, 25 maths, 30 reasoning and 20 general awareness and current affairs. Confirm the split in the current notice.
Do wrong answers lose marks in railway group D?
They do. Every wrong tick removes a third of a mark from the total, while a question left blank costs nothing.
Which books cover the group D science syllabus?
NCERT science textbooks for classes 9 and 10 cover nearly all of it. Add a basic general science practice set for speed.
Is the RRB group D syllabus in Hindi the same as in English?
It is identical. The board sets one paper and translates it into each language on the list. You choose your language while applying.
Do PET marks count in the merit list?
The PET only has to be cleared; it carries no marks. Merit follows your normalised CBT score, and you must pass the PET to move on to document verification.
What is the RRB group D syllabus on the official website?
Each RRB publishes the notice on its own website, and the syllabus is printed inside that notice. Links to all RRB websites are on indianrailways.gov.in.
