The MP higher education syllabus is the common course content that the Department of Higher Education, Madhya Pradesh, issues for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the state's colleges under the National Education Policy. Subject committees of the Central Board of Studies draft each paper, and the approved syllabus is posted on the department's portal for BA, BSc, BCom and many professional courses.
This guide explains how the syllabus is organised, what major, minor, foundation and vocational papers mean, how to find the right PDF for your subject and session, and how to use it to prepare for your annual or term exams.

How the MP higher education syllabus is organised
Under the NEP ordinances, a first year undergraduate student in Madhya Pradesh does not study a single block of subjects. Your timetable is built from five kinds of papers:
- Major: your main discipline, with three papers per subject listed for the first year.
- Minor: a second discipline studied in less depth, with two papers per subject.
- Multidisciplinary or elective: a subject outside your stream, or options such as NCC, NSS and physical education.
- Vocational: a skill course meant to give practical, job related training.
- Foundation course: common papers for everyone, covering Hindi, English, environmental studies and yoga with meditation.
Each subject's PDF lists units, suggested readings and, for science subjects, the practical work. Paper titles and codes are printed on the first page, so you can match them with your enrolment form.
Streams and subjects covered
| Stream | Examples of subjects |
|---|---|
| Arts | History, Hindi, English, sociology, economics, political science, geography, psychology, Sanskrit, Urdu and more than thirty in all |
| Science | Physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, microbiology, computer science, biotechnology and others |
| Commerce | Accounting, business studies, economics for commerce and allied papers |
| Professional | BBA, BCA, hotel management, tourism, journalism, food technology, library science |
| Postgraduate | MA, MSc and MCom subjects under Ordinance 14(2) |
Not every college teaches every subject. Your college's list of majors and minors decides which syllabus files apply to you.
Finding your syllabus PDF on the official portal
- Open the Department of Higher Education website and go to the syllabus section in the left menu.
- Choose the level (undergraduate or postgraduate) and the year you are in.
- Pick your stream, then the subject, and open the major or minor paper you need.
- Check the session printed on the file. A syllabus for an earlier session may differ in units or readings.
- Save a copy and compare it with what your college notice board or department head has announced.
Year by year: what changes as you move ahead
In the first year you take majors, a minor, an elective, a vocational course and the foundation papers. Later years narrow the focus: you continue in your chosen major while the number of side papers drops. The four year option leads to an honours degree, and the documents for that track are listed separately under Ordinance 14B. Students who leave early may receive a certificate, diploma or degree depending on the years completed; read the current ordinance for the exact exit rules, since details have been revised more than once.
Using the syllabus to plan your exam preparation
Your college papers are set from the units in the syllabus, so the PDF is your best study map. Number the units, mark which ones your teacher has finished, and note the topics that appear in more than one paper. For foundation papers such as Hindi, English and environmental studies, short notes per unit work well because questions are often direct.
Some students use the same subject knowledge later for recruitment or eligibility tests; the MP SET syllabus builds on postgraduate content, and the UGC NET syllabus covers national level teaching eligibility.
Books and reading lists
Each syllabus file ends with a list of suggested books, often with Hindi medium titles alongside English ones. Start with these, since question setters work from the same lists. NCERT books of class 11 and 12 are a sound base for science and social science majors in the first year. Avoid buying guide books before you have seen the units, because the papers were reorganised under NEP and older material may not match.
If you are a graduate looking at state government jobs instead, the state exams pages and our guide to the MPPSC syllabus are good places to begin.
