Clerk test: 60 marks in GK, arithmetic, English and reasoning

WBSSC group C syllabus for the clerk recruitment

State examsMadhyamik levelTyping testUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The WBSSC group C syllabus covers four subjects in a 60 mark objective test: General Awareness, Arithmetic, General English and Logical Reasoning, all at about Madhyamik standard. This objective paper forms the first round of the State Level Selection Test that the Commission holds to fill clerk posts in the state's government aided and sponsored schools.

This page goes deeper into the clerk post alone: the WBSSC group C exam pattern, what each subject asks of you, how the other 40 marks are earned outside the paper, and a short plan to cover it all.

You mark answers on an OMR sheet, and the questions appear in English and Bengali. The latest clerk paper started at noon; reports differ on whether it ran one hour or close to two, so take the timing from your admit card. No marks were taken off for wrong answers last time, which means every question deserves an attempt.

A few portals show a split of 15 questions each across four areas. The figures above match most reports of the latest round, but the Commission's notice and admit card are the final word.

How the 100 marks are made up

The written paper is only part of your score. Clerk applicants were ranked out of 100 last time, with marks spread like this:

Clerk merit scheme, latest round (as reported)
ComponentMarks
Written test60
Typing and computer proficiency test15
Academic qualification10
Interview10
Similar experience (1 mark per year)5

So a strong written score can still slip if your typing is slow. Treat the skill test as a fifth subject from the first week rather than something to learn after the result.

WBSSC group C syllabus for General Awareness

This block and Arithmetic together hold two thirds of the written marks. Questions usually come from:

  • History of India and of Bengal, the national movement and social reformers from the state
  • Geography: rivers, soils, crops and districts of West Bengal, plus the physical map of the country
  • The Constitution, Parliament, the state legislature and local bodies
  • Basic economics, banking terms and government schemes
  • Science you meet daily: food and vitamins, common illnesses, how the body works, light, heat and household chemicals
  • Prize winners, sporting events, famous writers and their works, national and international days
  • Recent events in the state and the country over the last several months

Arithmetic, English and reasoning in detail

Arithmetic (20 marks)

  • Whole numbers, factors and multiples, BODMAS style simplification
  • Percent change, sharing in a ratio, mean of a set
  • Gain, loss and marked price questions, and interest earned over years (simple or compounded)
  • Workers finishing a job together, trains and vehicles covering a distance
  • Measuring fields, rooms and boxes: perimeter, area and volume

General English (10 marks)

  • Grammar basics such as tense, articles, prepositions and agreement of verb with subject
  • Vocabulary: same and opposite meanings, plus one word that replaces a long phrase
  • Changing sentences from active to passive, and reported speech
  • Picking out the wrong portion of a line, choosing the word that fits a gap

Logical Reasoning (10 marks)

  • Completing a pattern of letters or numbers, finding pairs that match, picking the item that does not belong
  • Secret code words, which way a person faces after turns, position in a queue
  • Family tree puzzles and small seating arrangements

The English and reasoning sections are short, and most of their question types repeat. A few weeks of steady practice usually lifts these 20 marks close to full.

Syllabus of WBSSC group C next to the Group D paper

The same selection test also fills Group D posts, but that paper is shorter at 40 marks, leaves out English and is pitched at Class VIII level. Clerks also face the typing test and get academic marks, which Group D does not. Both posts are compared on the WBSSC group C D syllabus page, and the lower post has its own WBSSC group D syllabus guide. If you qualify for both, the overlap in GK, arithmetic and reasoning means one plan can serve the two papers.

Six weeks to the clerk test

  1. Week 1: percentage, ratio and averages from school maths books; 30 sums a day.
  2. Week 2: interest, profit and loss, work and distance; start 20 minutes of typing practice daily.
  3. Week 3: Bengal and Indian history and geography from state board social science books.
  4. Week 4: polity, science and grammar drills for the English section.
  5. Week 5: reasoning chapters, current events, and basic word processing and spreadsheet tasks.
  6. Week 6: four timed 60 question papers on OMR style sheets, then revision of weak chapters.
Rakib works at a photocopy shop in Barasat and has evenings free. He solves arithmetic on the shop's quiet afternoons, types the day's news headlines into a document each night to build speed, and keeps Sunday for a full mock. Because there was no penalty for wrong answers last time, he fills every circle before handing in the sheet.

Eligibility at a glance

You must have passed Madhyamik, the old School Final or an equivalent examination. The age window is 18 to 40, with the cut off date set at the start of the advertisement year (1 January), and reserved category and disabled applicants get a higher ceiling under state rules. Candidates named as tainted after the earlier recruitment was cancelled are not allowed to apply. Confirm current conditions and fees in the notice on the Commission's portal before you fill the form.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of the WBSSC group C written paper?

Sixty objective questions of 1 mark each, split across General Awareness, Arithmetic, General English and Logical Reasoning in the latest round. Answers go on an OMR sheet.

Does a wrong answer reduce my clerk exam score?

Reports of the latest clerk paper say wrong answers cost nothing. Rules can shift between rounds, so go by what the admit card says on exam day.

What level are the questions?

Mostly Madhyamik level, which matches the minimum qualification. General Awareness can go wider, especially on current events and West Bengal topics.

Does the typing test really matter?

Yes. It carried 15 of the 100 marks in the latest scheme, which is more than the English or reasoning sections of the written test. Practise typing and basic computer work alongside your written preparation.

Can a Group D applicant also apply for clerk posts?

If you hold Madhyamik or an equivalent pass and meet the age rule, you can usually apply for both. The current notice explains whether separate forms and fees apply for each post.

Which books cover this syllabus?

State board school books up to Class X in social science, science and mathematics, a basic English grammar book, and NCERT books for wider GK. Add a monthly summary of state and national news.
