Talathi Bharti Syllabus and Exam Pattern

State examsGraduateMaharashtraUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The talathi bharti syllabus has changed shape: Talathi posts, now called Gram Mahsul Adhikari, are filled through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission's Group C combined exam, which starts with a 100 question prelims on general studies, arithmetic and reasoning and then moves to a mains with Marathi and English. Earlier recruitments used a single 200 mark paper set by the Revenue and Forest Department, so older study material only partly fits.

Here you will see both stages of the new route, the topic lists, the negative marking rule, the eligibility basics and a short comparison with the previous single paper format, so you can decide what to keep from your old notes.

The two stage route to a Talathi post

Talathi is one of several Group C posts that the commission now recruits through one combined prelims. Everyone applying for these posts, whether for Talathi, clerk typist or tax assistant, writes the same preliminary paper. Those who clear the cut off move on to the mains, where the papers are linked to the cadre, and the final step is verification of original documents.

This matters for your preparation. Stage one only filters candidates, and it penalises errors, so accuracy beats speed. The mains then brings language skills back to the centre, which is where many earlier Talathi aspirants were already strong.

Questions100 objective questions
Marks100
Time1 hour

Negative markingOne fourth of the marks of that question deducted for each wrong answer

One hour for 100 questions leaves you 36 seconds a question. With a quarter mark lost per mistake, every four slips cancel a right answer, so leave alone any item where you can strike off fewer than two choices.

Talathi bharti syllabus for prelims

  • Current affairs: Maharashtra, national and world events, state schemes, awards and reports
  • History: modern India with emphasis on Maharashtra, social reformers and the freedom movement
  • Geography: Maharashtra's districts, rivers, climate, soils, crops and resources, plus India and the world
  • Economics: Indian and Maharashtra economy, banking, inflation, national income, budgets and public finance
  • Political science and governance: the Constitution, fundamental rights, state administration, panchayati raj
  • General science: physics, chemistry, biology and health science basics
  • Arithmetic: fractions, percentages, averages, ratios, simple and compound interest, profit, loss, work and speed problems
  • Intelligence test: series, analogy, classification, coding and decoding, directions, blood relations

Since a Talathi keeps land records at the village level, revenue administration and local government questions under polity are worth extra revision, even though the prelims is common to all posts.

Mains papers and what they test

Reports of the notification describe a two paper mains for most Group C cadres, worth 400 marks together. Paper 1 tests Marathi and English, and Paper 2 covers general studies and ability along with the topics set for that cadre.

  • Marathi: grammar (sandhi, samas, vibhakti, kaal), vocabulary, mhani and vakprachar, spelling and comprehension
  • English: usage and grammar, word meanings and opposites, idioms, spotting errors and reading passages
  • General studies and ability: the prelims areas at more depth, plus aptitude
The exact number of questions, time and marks for each mains paper, and any topics special to the Gram Mahsul Adhikari cadre, are in the MPSC notification and its syllabus annexure. Treat this outline as a guide and check the latest document before you plan your mains revision.

How the older single paper compared

In the previous standalone Talathi recruitment, candidates sat a single computer based test: 100 items at 2 marks apiece, 200 marks in all, over 2 hours, with no negative marking.

Older Talathi paper (for reference only)
SubjectQuestionsMarks
Marathi2550
English2550
General knowledge2550
Intelligence test and arithmetic2550

Old papers are still useful for Marathi, English and arithmetic practice. They will not train you for negative marking or for the wider general studies spread of the new prelims, so mix them with Group C style practice sets.

Eligibility in brief

  • Graduation in any stream from a recognised university
  • Ability to read, write and speak Marathi
  • A computer certificate such as MS-CIT or an equivalent; the notification explains any time allowed to obtain it
  • Age 18 to 38 years for open category candidates and up to 43 for reserved categories, counted on the date given in the notification
  • Maharashtra domicile, as set out in the notification

Extra years for serving state staff, former defence personnel and candidates with disabilities follow Maharashtra rules, listed category by category in the notice.

Preparing for the new Talathi exam

Give the first two months to prelims areas, beginning with Maharashtra geography and history, where state level questions are heavy. Keep 30 minutes a day for arithmetic and reasoning so speed builds slowly. After the prelims, shift to Marathi and English grammar for the mains.

Pooja, a BA graduate from Satara, cleared the language section easily in the old format but never faced negative marking. In her first two mock prelims she attempted all 100 questions and lost nearly a tenth of her score to wrong guesses. She now flags each doubtful item, comes back only when minutes remain, and her final mark climbs although she answers fewer.
