WBPSC women's post: MCQ screening, four written papers of 400 marks, then a viva

ICDS supervisor syllabus and exam pattern for West Bengal

State examsWomen onlyGraduateUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The ICDS supervisor syllabus set by WBPSC, the state's public service commission, runs in three parts: a 100 question objective screening test of one hour, a conventional written exam of four papers carrying 400 marks, and a viva voce of 50 marks. Only the written papers and the viva count towards the final merit list; the screening test just decides who moves ahead.

The post, Supervisor of the Integrated Child Development Services scheme under the state's women and child development department, is open to women graduates only. A supervisor guides and checks the work of several anganwadi centres, so the written papers lean towards nutrition, child care and welfare schemes along with language skills. The last full recruitment advertised 2,954 vacancies.

Exam at a glance

  • Conducted by

    WBPSC, Kolkata
  • Part I

Screening test: 100 MCQs, 100 marks, 1 hour, OMR sheet
  • Part II

Four descriptive papers of 100 marks each, 90 minutes apiece
  • Part III

    Viva voce, 50 marks
  • Merit based on

Part II and Part III marks together (450)
  • Who can apply

  • Official website

Three parts of the selection

  1. Preliminary screening test: multiple choice items answered by darkening bubbles. Clearing it on merit gets you to the written exam, but these marks are dropped afterwards.
  2. Written examination: four conventional papers where you write answers in full.
  3. Viva voce: an interview for candidates shortlisted on the written result.

Because screening marks are not carried forward, a safe score in Part I is enough. Your real competition begins in the descriptive papers, where answer writing, language and neat working of sums decide rank.

Wrong answers in the screening test attract a penalty; how much is cut appears in the advertisement and on the booklet cover. The descriptive papers carry no negative marking. Papers III and IV may be answered in English or Bengali.

The standard of Paper III is described as class 10 in one published version of the scheme and as graduation level in later summaries. Read the syllabus annexure of the next WBPSC advertisement before you fix your reading level.

Part I syllabus: GK, arithmetic and reasoning

  • General knowledge: Indian history, Indian plus world geography, the economy, polity, science and technology, current events and recent treaties.
  • Arithmetic, class 10 level: percentages, gain, loss and discount, averages, ratios, number series, work rate and speed questions.
  • Reasoning: verbal and non verbal items, Venn diagrams, logic, coding and decoding, number analogy and blood relations.

Sixty minutes across a hundred items works out near 36 seconds apiece, so practise quick arithmetic shortcuts and skip any sum that needs more than a minute.

How to split your preparation

Part II carries 400 of the 450 marks that make up the merit list, so it deserves the larger share of your hours even before the screening date is announced.

Moumita is a BA graduate working at a private school in Nadia. She writes one English precis and one Bengali report every weekday evening, and keeps Saturday for Paper III notes on nutrition, the ICDS scheme and state welfare programmes. Two weeks before the screening test she switches to daily MCQ practice, then returns to answer writing once she clears it.
  • Read the NCERT home science and biology chapters on nutrition, deficiency diseases and child growth for Paper III.
  • Practise translation both ways, since a supervisor writes reports and reads circulars in both languages.
  • For Paper IV, show every step; partial credit is possible in a conventional paper.

Other supervisor and West Bengal exams

Many states fill a similar post under names such as mahila supervisor or mukhya sevika, with very different papers. If you are looking at another state, start with our mahila supervisor syllabus page. Within West Bengal, the WBPSC miscellaneous syllabus and the WBCS syllabus share the general studies base, and guides for other state commissions sit under state exams.

Frequently asked questions

Can men apply for the WBPSC ICDS supervisor post?

No. The post is reserved for women. Male candidates are not eligible under the recruitment rules.

Will my screening score be added to the final list?

They do not. Part I works as a filter for the written round and nothing more. Final merit uses the 400 written marks and the 50 viva marks.

Which stage of the ICDS supervisor exam pattern takes marks away for a wrong pick?

Only in the objective screening test. The four descriptive papers and the viva have no negative marking. The exact deduction for a wrong MCQ is given in the notice.

Which language papers can I choose for Paper II?

The scheme lists Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali and Santali at class 12 standard. Note that you still need to read, write and speak Bengali to be eligible.

What is the maximum age for ICDS supervisor?

The last advertisement fixed it at 39 years for unreserved candidates, while reserved West Bengal candidates got the additional years listed in the table above. Wait for the new notice to confirm.

WBPSC releases the syllabus with each advertisement on wbpsc.gov.in. Check the notices and downloads sections there for any revision.
