The REET level 1 syllabus covers five equal sections of 30 questions each: CDP (child psychology and teaching), two languages, maths and EVS, adding up to 150 questions in a 2 hour 30 minute paper. Anyone aiming to teach in a Rajasthan primary school (classes 1 to 5) sits this paper, and it pitches content at the primary school level while asking a good share of items on teaching method.
Many aspirants call this the REET level 1 pre syllabus, because clearing it only makes you eligible. The recruitment itself happens through a separate mains exam, which we touch on below and cover fully elsewhere.

Where Level 1 fits in teacher recruitment
Rajasthan uses two exams to fill primary teacher posts. First comes the REET eligibility paper set by BSER. Score the minimum marks and you receive a certificate, which the state has declared valid for your whole life. Then, when the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board advertises third grade teacher vacancies, certificate holders compete in a recruitment test that aspirants call REET Mains.
This page is about the first paper. If you already hold the certificate and are preparing for recruitment, switch to our page on the REET Mains level 1 syllabus. Teaching classes 6 to 8 instead? Open the REET level 2 syllabus, and for both exams side by side, the main REET syllabus guide.
REET level 1 exam pattern
| Part of the paper | Number of items | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| CDP for learners aged 6 to 11 | 30 | 30 |
| Language I | 30 | 30 |
| Language II (different from Language I) | 30 | 30 |
| Mathematics | 30 | 30 |
| Environmental studies | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
Unlike Level 2, there is no subject choice here: every primary candidate answers both maths and EVS. Each question has five bubbles on the OMR sheet, the fifth meant for a question you choose to skip, and each incorrect bubble loses you a third of a mark. Reports say leaving all five bubbles empty is also penalised, so go over the OMR rules printed with your admit card.
Child development and pedagogy topics
These questions focus on learners in the 6 to 11 age group, so picture a seven or nine year old pupil while studying every theory.
- Growth and development: what it means, its principles and stages, and how heredity and surroundings shape a child
- Learning: its meaning, processes and theories, applied in class; the ways young children think and learn
- Motivation and its link with learning
- How pupils differ: personality, intelligence and individual differences
- Understanding diverse learners, learning difficulties and adjustment
- The teaching and learning process
- Measurement, assessment and evaluation and why we use them; action research
- The Right to Education Act and what it expects from teachers on free and compulsory schooling
REET syllabus level 1: the two language sections
You choose two different languages from the list allowed in the notification, which in past cycles offered seven: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi and Sindhi. Both sections mix content with language teaching method.
- Comprehension: an unseen prose passage and, especially in Language II, an unseen poem, followed by items on sense, inference and word meaning.
- Grammar (Hindi as an example): paryayvachi and vilom shabd, a compact word that replaces a whole phrase, upsarg and pratyay, sandhi, samas, word classes, ling, vachan and kaal, idioms and proverbs.
- Grammar (English as an example): framing questions, modal auxiliaries, phrasal verbs, idioms and basic literary terms.
- Pedagogy: principles of language teaching, the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, teaching material, continuous evaluation and remedial teaching.
Mathematics and EVS topics for Level 1
Mathematics
- Numbers and basic operations, Indian money, fractions
- LCM and HCF, unitary method, averages, profit, loss and simple interest
- Geometry and mensuration: plane figures, area and perimeter, measurement of length, weight, time and volume
- Pedagogy: the nature of maths as a tool for logic, why it sits in the primary curriculum, the language of maths, community maths, evaluation, spotting errors in children's work, and diagnosis followed by remedial help
Environmental studies
- Family, clothes and habitats, professions, public places and institutions
- Our culture and civilisation, with Rajasthan's fairs, festivals, art and notable people
- Transport and communication, personal hygiene, living beings, matter and energy
- Pollution, natural resources and the environment of Rajasthan
- Pedagogy: concept and scope of EVS, how it ties into science and social studies, activities, experiments, teaching aids and teaching problems
The content is at class 1 to 5 level, though questions may stretch to secondary standard. The Rajasthan angle in EVS is where most out of state candidates lose marks.
REET level 1 mains syllabus in brief
The recruitment exam for primary teachers is run by RSSB and looks quite different. Recent rounds used 150 questions worth 2 marks each, 300 marks in all, in 2 hours 30 minutes, with one third negative marking. The syllabus blends Rajasthan geography, history and culture, general knowledge and current affairs, educational psychology, school subjects with their teaching methods, and information technology in education. Treat the eligibility paper as your base and add the Rajasthan GK and computer parts once you have the certificate.
Twelve weeks to the primary paper
Since all five sections carry equal weight, your plan should push your weakest section up rather than polishing your favourite.
- Weeks 1 to 4: read class 1 to 5 school books for maths and EVS and make topic notes; give 45 minutes daily to one CDP theory, linking each to a classroom example.
- Weeks 5 to 8: grammar drills for both languages, three unseen passages a week, and the pedagogy portion of every section, which quietly decides many marks.
- Weeks 9 to 12: complete mock papers of 150 items, timed at 150 minutes, marking the fifth bubble for skipped questions so the habit is set before exam day.

Frequently asked questions
Who can appear in REET Level 1?
In recent cycles you qualified with class 12 (usually 50% marks) along with D.El.Ed (two years), B.El.Ed (a four year degree) or the two year special education diploma, and final year trainees were allowed too. A B.Ed is listed only for Level 2. Check the exact percentages and relaxations in the latest notification.
Does REET Level 1 cut marks for wrong answers?
Under the newest rules, yes. In the latest cycle one third of a mark was cut for each wrong answer, and each question had five options. Earlier REET rounds did not deduct anything, so old papers should be practised under the new rule.
How does the Level 1 pre paper differ from the Level 1 mains?
The pre paper (eligibility test) has CDP, two languages, maths and EVS for 150 marks. The mains is RSSB's 300 mark recruitment exam with Rajasthan GK, educational psychology, school subjects, teaching methods and computers.
Does the REET Level 1 certificate expire?
The Rajasthan government announced that the REET eligibility certificate is valid for life. Confirm the current rule in the latest notification.
Which books cover the REET syllabus level 1?
Begin with the state's own primary textbooks in maths, EVS and languages, then use them up to class 8 for depth. For CDP, a standard child psychology textbook used in D.El.Ed courses is enough, alongside the official syllabus.
Is it allowed to sit Level 1 and Level 2 together?
Yes. Holding the training qualification for each level lets you register for both, and they are held as separate papers in different shifts.
