Paper 2 for classes 6 to 8: pedagogy, two languages and a subject block

REET Level 2 Syllabus and Paper 2 Pattern

TeachingRajasthan TETGraduate plus B.EdUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The REET level 2 syllabus covers four blocks in one paper of 150 questions: pedagogy and child psychology, a pair of languages, and a 60 mark subject block where you choose either social studies or maths together with science. This is the paper you write if you want to teach classes 6 to 8 in Rajasthan's government schools.

REET itself is only an eligibility test, set by Rajasthan's school board (BSER). Passing it does not hand you a teaching post; it makes you eligible to sit the recruitment exam, commonly called REET Mains, run separately by RSSB, the state staff selection board. Below you will find the pre exam pattern, what each block asks, how the mains stage fits in, and a plan that works around the 60 question subject block.

Where Level 2 sits in the REET process

  1. REET Level 2 (pre or eligibility test): a single paper set by BSER. Clear the minimum marks and you get an eligibility certificate.
  2. REET Mains (recruitment exam): which RSSB holds whenever it advertises third grade teacher posts. Only REET qualified candidates can apply.
  3. Document verification and posting: based on the mains merit list.

When people search for the "REET level 2 pre syllabus", they mean the first paper on this page. The mains has its own, much heavier syllabus, which we cover on our separate guide to the REET Mains level 2 syllabus. Aiming at classes 1 to 5 instead? Read the REET level 1 syllabus.

Language II (any one other than Language I)3030

You get 150 minutes, and apart from the language parts each question is set bilingually. Maths and science teachers choose the first subject option, social studies teachers the second; teachers of other subjects pick whichever option the notification allows them.

In the latest cycle BSER brought in a fifth bubble on every question, for marking a question you are skipping, along with a cut of 0.33 marks for each incorrect response. Reports say a question with no bubble shaded at all also loses one third. Go through the marking clause of the newest notification before exam day, since these rules shape how you should guess.

REET level 2 syllabus: child development and pedagogy

These 30 questions test how children aged roughly 11 to 14 learn and how you would teach them.

  • Growth and development, heredity and environment, adolescence
  • Learning: meaning, factors, and theories (behaviourism, Gestalt, cognitive and constructivist views)
  • Motivation and its use in the classroom
  • Individual differences, personality and intelligence, and how they are measured
  • Learners with special needs: gifted, creative, slow learners, disadvantaged children and learning difficulties
  • Adjustment, the teacher's role, teaching and learning strategies
  • Assessment and evaluation, achievement tests, action research
  • Right to Education Act and its classroom duties

Language I and Language II topics

You pick two different languages. Language I goes deeper into grammar and comprehension; Language II leans on unseen passages, poems and teaching methods. In both, a good part of the marks comes from language pedagogy.

Language I (Hindi example)

  • Unseen prose passage with questions on vocabulary and grammar
  • Word types, sentence formation, prefixes and suffixes, sandhi and samas, muhavare and lokoktiyan, punctuation
  • Teaching methods, language skills, teaching material and evaluation, remedial teaching

Language II (English example)

  • Unseen prose: linking devices, subject and verb agreement, inference
  • Unseen poem: alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, rhyme
  • Modal auxiliaries, phrasal verbs and idioms, literary terms such as sonnet, elegy and short story
  • Communicative teaching, language skills, evaluation and remedial work

Subject block: social studies, or maths with science

Mathematics (30 questions)

  • Indices, algebraic expressions, factors, linear equations
  • Squares, cubes and their roots
  • Percentage and its uses, ratio, profit, loss and interest of both kinds
  • Lines and angles, plane figures, area, surface area and volume
  • Data handling, graphs, probability
  • Pedagogy of mathematics: nature of maths, curriculum, remedial teaching, evaluation

Science (30 questions)

  • Living things, micro-organisms, cell structure, human body and health, nutrition, reproduction
  • Force, motion, pressure, energy, heat, light, sound, electricity and magnetism
  • Matter and chemical substances, solar system
  • Environment, natural resources, pollution, agriculture in Rajasthan
  • Pedagogy of science: methods, teaching aids, evaluation

Social studies (60 questions)

  • India's history from ancient times through the medieval period to the national movement
  • Indian Constitution, democracy and local government
  • The earth, landforms, climate and resources, with a focus on India and Rajasthan
  • History, art and culture of Rajasthan
  • Economics basics: banking, insurance, consumer awareness
  • Pedagogy of social science: classroom processes, projects, evaluation

The level of content follows school books for classes 6 to 8, though questions may stretch up to secondary level.

Passing marks and the mains stage

REET is qualifying in nature. Recent cycles set the general category minimum at 60 percent, which is 90 out of 150, with lower thresholds for reserved categories, women from certain groups, persons with disability and other notified groups. The relaxed percentages have been reported differently in different places, so take them from the latest notification, not from a coaching chart.

Once qualified, you can apply to REET Mains when posts open. Recent mains rounds had 150 questions worth 2 marks each, 300 in all, with 150 minutes to answer, built around Rajasthan general knowledge, current affairs, educational psychology, your school subject, teaching methods and computer basics. That is a different syllabus, so do not rely on Level 2 preparation alone.

Ten week plan built around the 60 mark block

Since the subject block alone is 40 percent of the paper, give it the largest share of time.

  • Weeks 1 to 4: read the class 6 to 8 Rajasthan board or NCERT books for your subject option, covering a chapter daily and jotting down formulas and definitions.
  • Weeks 2 to 6 (in parallel): 45 minutes a day on child development theories and RTE provisions; once the terms are clear, this block rewards you quickly.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: grammar drills and pedagogy questions for both languages; practise unseen passages against the clock.
  • Weeks 9 and 10: full 150 question timed papers from the official site, then revise only your weakest section. The CTET paper 2 syllabus overlaps heavily, so its practice sets help too.
Meena is a B.Sc. B.Ed graduate from Kota who chose maths and science. Her mock scores showed 50 out of 60 in the subject block but only 16 out of 30 in English as Language II. She switched her daily hour from science revision to English unseen poems and modal verbs, and her next three mocks crossed 100.

Yes. Anyone holding the qualifications for both can apply for both levels and pay the combined fee. The two papers are held in separate shifts.

Which Language I options are allowed?

Recent notifications listed Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi and Gujarati. Language II must be a different language from your Language I.
