REET Mains Syllabus Level 1: Six Parts, 300 Marks

Teaching150 questionsClasses 1 to 5Updated 26 Oct 2026

The REET Mains syllabus level 1 covers the RSSB recruitment exam for primary teachers of classes 1 to 5, a single objective test carrying 300 marks over 150 questions. It has six parts: the state's land, past, culture and dialects (100 marks), state GK with schooling, RTE and news (80), five school subjects (50), how to teach them (40), child psychology (20) and computers in education (10).

Add the first two parts and you get 180 of the 300 marks, so this is as much a Rajasthan knowledge test as a teaching test. You can sit it only with a REET level 1 certificate. Below are the topics part by part, the marking rules and a study order that follows the marks.

Questions per part are worked out from 2 marks a question. For each wrong choice, RSSB takes back 0.67, a third of the 2 marks on offer. The answer sheet gives an extra option to fill when you skip an item, and the Board's instructions say that skipping that step on too many items can cost you your candidature.

This split is from the syllabus RSSB issued for the most recent level 1 recruitment. Some guides still print older or mixed tables, so match your plan to the syllabus file published with the next advertisement.

Part 1: Rajasthan geography, history, culture (100 marks)

  • Geography of the state: relief divisions, climate and the monsoon, rivers, lakes and dams, forests, sanctuaries and wildlife, soil types, chief crops, population figures, tribal groups, minerals, power sources, tourist circuits and transport
  • History: prehistoric and early settlements (Ganeshwar, Kalibangan, Bairath, Balathal, Ahar), ruling dynasties and their administration, the 1857 uprising across Rajputana, kisan andolans and tribal uprisings, Praja Mandal activity and the unification of Rajasthan
  • Culture: forts and temples, fairs and festivals, folk gods and saints, folk music, dance and theatre, dress and jewellery, painting styles and handicrafts, notable personalities
  • Rajasthani language: main dialects, key literary works and authors, saint and folk literature

At a third of the paper, this one part is worth more than the subject, pedagogy, psychology and IT parts put together.

Part 2: Rajasthan GK, education, RTE and current affairs (80 marks)

  • State symbols, flagship schemes, research centres, religious places, industries, sportspersons, cities, and the political and administrative setup
  • Education in the state: student schemes and awards, SMCs and how they run, new classroom practices, and how the state is rolling out NEP
  • The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, the Rajasthan RTE Rules, and free admission in recognised private schools
  • State and national current affairs

A primary teacher works under the RTE framework daily, so expect direct questions on admission rules, the duties of school management committees and what schools may not do, such as screening children or charging capitation fees at admission.

Parts 3 and 4: school subjects and their pedagogy

Unlike the upper primary exam, level 1 has no subject choice. Every candidate faces all five subjects at the level of the primary and middle school books, with 10 content marks and 8 teaching method marks per subject.

  • Hindi: parts of speech, sandhi, samas, word formation, correct spelling and usage, idioms and proverbs
  • English: articles, tenses, voice change, reported speech, idioms, phrasal verbs, one word substitution
  • Mathematics: numbers and primes, fractions and decimals, the four operations, factors, HCF and LCM, percentages, interest of both kinds, gain and loss, lines and angles, perimeter and area, surface area and volume
  • General Science: acids, bases and salts, elements, compounds and mixtures, physical and chemical change, motion and force, light, the cell, respiration and transport in living things, reproduction in animals
  • Social Studies: an introduction to Rajasthan, the Mughal period, landforms, vegetation and wildlife, agriculture and the state economy, the Indian Constitution and Rajasthan's part in framing it, local administration

For pedagogy, each language, Mathematics and Science asks about methods and approaches, teaching aids, classroom challenges, assessment, and finding and fixing learning gaps. Social Studies adds the nature of the subject and project work.

Parts 5 and 6: psychology and IT

Educational psychology (20 marks) covers the meaning and scope of the subject, stages of child development and what shapes them, heredity and environment, personality, theories and tests of intelligence, how learning happens, slow, gifted and specially abled learners, learning difficulties, motivation and adjustment. Information technology (10 marks) asks about IT basics, common tools, their classroom use and how technology changes society.

How level 1 Mains compares with the other REET papers

The REET pre level 1 syllabus belongs to the qualifying test with child development, two languages, maths and environmental studies; it gives you a certificate, not a job. The Mains is the actual hiring exam. Compared with the REET Mains level 2 syllabus, where one chosen subject carries 120 marks, level 1 gives only 50 marks to content spread thinly over five subjects and pushes far more weight onto Rajasthan GK.

Study order based on REET Mains syllabus level 1 marks

  1. Weeks 1 to 6: Rajputana's dynasties and movements, fairs, folk arts, and Rajasthani language and literature. Make one page summaries for each dynasty, fair and painting school.
  2. Weeks 7 to 10: Rajasthan geography with a blank map, then state schemes, education policy and the RTE Act and Rules.
  3. Weeks 11 to 13: the five subjects and their pedagogy, one subject every few days, because each carries only 18 marks in total.
  4. Weeks 14 to 16: psychology, IT and a year of current affairs, plus two full mock papers each week with the one third penalty applied.
Sunita, a D.El.Ed. pass out from Bhilwara, spent her first two months on maths and science because they felt hardest. A mock showed she was scoring well there but losing heavily in Part 1. She moved to Rajasthan culture and geography for six weeks and kept maths to one hour on alternate days. Her mock total climbed by about 40 marks.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks is the level 1 Mains paper out of?

Which subjects come in REET Mains level 1?

All five school subjects: Hindi, English, Mathematics, General Science and Social Studies. Each carries 10 marks for content and 8 marks for pedagogy, so there is no subject option at this level.

How many marks do I lose for a wrong guess at level 1?

One third of the marks of the question for each wrong answer, which works out to about 0.67 of the 2 marks. Read the OMR instructions on handling unanswered questions.

Is Rajasthan GK the biggest part of the level 1 paper?

Yes. Part 1 on Rajasthan's geography, history, culture and language carries 100 marks and Part 2 on state GK, education, RTE and current affairs carries 80. Together that is 60 percent of the paper.

Do I need REET to apply for the level 1 Mains?

Yes. You must have qualified the REET eligibility test at level 1 and hold the teacher training qualification the notification asks for. The REET level 1 syllabus page covers that eligibility test.

Which syllabus file should I trust?

RSSB posts the syllabus with the recruitment advertisement on rssb.rajasthan.gov.in, in Hindi and English. Use that file as your final checklist.
