CTET Paper 1 Syllabus for Primary Teachers (Classes 1 to 5)

TeachingClasses 1 to 5150 minutesUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The CTET paper 1 syllabus is meant for people who want to teach classes 1 to 5, and it has five equal sections (child development with pedagogy, a first and a second language, maths, and environmental studies), each worth 30 one-mark questions. You get 150 minutes for the 150 questions, and no marks are lost for a wrong choice.

What makes paper 1 different from a normal school test is that half of the maths, EVS and language questions ask how a topic should be taught to a young child, not just what the answer is. Below you will find the paper 1 format, the topic list of every section, the Hindi and English language parts, and a plan that gives pedagogy the time it needs. Planning to teach classes 6 to 8 as well? Read the CTET paper 2 syllabus too.

CTET exam pattern paper 1: five equal parts

Paper 1 is one objective test with no second stage. Every section is compulsory, and each one carries the same weight, so no single subject can carry you through.

Both language slots are filled by you from the options CBSE prints, and you cannot pick one language twice. In recent sessions the test has been held on an OMR sheet, with paper 1 usually in the afternoon shift. Confirm the mode and the timing for your own session on the hall ticket.

Content and teaching questions in each section

The bulletin fixes how many questions in each section test subject matter and how many test teaching method. Use this split to plan your hours.

Where the 150 marks come from
SectionSubject matterTeaching method
CDPGrowth of the child 15, inclusion 5How children learn 10

Language IIUnseen passages 15Language teaching 15

Add it up and roughly 70 of the 150 marks come from teaching method. The content items follow the primary textbooks, though CBSE says the level of difficulty can stretch up to the secondary stage.

Child Development and Pedagogy for the primary child

In paper 1 this section is framed around children aged 6 to 11, so think of a class 2 or class 4 child when you read each idea.

  • Growth and development (15): what development means and the principles behind it, its tie with learning, nature versus nurture, the part played by parents, peers and teachers in socialising a child, the theories of Vygotsky, Piaget and Kohlberg and their critiques, progressive and child-centred schooling, critiques of intelligence tests and the multi-dimensional view of intelligence, how thought and language shape each other, gender roles and bias in school, differences among learners of different languages, castes, communities and religions, and the two purposes of evaluation (guiding learning and measuring it), with school based assessment and CCE.
  • Inclusive education (5): children from disadvantaged backgrounds, children with learning difficulties or impairments, and talented or creative children.
  • Learning and pedagogy (10): the way young pupils reason, reasons a child may fall behind at school, core classroom processes and strategies, learning as a social activity, the child as a problem solver and a young investigator, mistakes and alternative ideas as signs of thinking, feelings and cognition, motivation, and the personal and outside factors that help or block learning.

CTET Hindi and English syllabus for paper 1

The usual pairing is Hindi in one slot and English in the other. Other Indian languages are on offer as well, and the question format stays the same whichever you take.

Language I (your stronger language)

  • Reading: a prose or drama extract plus a poem, followed by items that test understanding, drawing inferences, grammar and word knowledge.
  • Teaching the language: how children pick up a language versus how they learn it formally, sound principles for teaching, why talking and listening come first, the right amount of grammar in class, handling a class where children speak many home languages, common errors and disorders, checking reading, writing, speaking and listening, and choosing books and multilingual material, plus remedial work.

Language II

  • Reading: two prose extracts, which may be literary, narrative, discursive or scientific, with items on understanding, grammar and word knowledge.
  • Teaching the language: the identical pedagogy list given above.

For English in paper 1 the bulletin gives no grammar chapter list. Expect parts of speech, tense, voice, synonyms and figures of speech to come up through the passages.

Mathematics topics for classes 1 to 5

  • Content (15): numbers and the four operations (adding, taking away, multiplying, dividing); shapes, space and the solid objects children see around them; geometry; measurement of length, weight, capacity and time; money; patterns; and simple data handling.
  • Pedagogical issues (15): what kind of subject maths is and how it builds logical thinking, the reasoning patterns of young children, where maths fits in the curriculum, maths as a language, maths found in daily community life, formal and informal ways of testing, everyday teaching problems, analysing errors, and diagnosing gaps followed by remedial help.

The content is primary level, but the questions often hide it inside a classroom story, such as a child who writes 25 as 205. You need to spot the misconception and pick the best teaching response.

Environmental Studies topics

  • Content (15): the six themes of the primary EVS books: family and friends (which covers relationships, plants, animals, and work and play), food, water, shelter, travel, and the things people make and do.
  • Pedagogical issues (15): concept and scope of EVS, why integrated EVS matters, EVS and environmental education, learning principles, the link with science and social science, approaches to presenting concepts, activities, experiments and practical work, discussion, CCE, teaching material and aids, and common problems.

The class 3 to 5 EVS books from NCERT are the base for content. For pedagogy, questions often ask which activity best builds a concept, so learn why field visits, surveys and group talk are preferred over rote definitions.

Ten weeks to cover the syllabus of CTET paper 1

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: CDP theory. Make one page for each thinker with a primary classroom example.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: maths content from the class 1 to 5 books, then the pedagogy list, focusing on error analysis.
  3. Weeks 5 and 6: EVS books theme by theme, with pedagogy notes.
  4. Weeks 7 and 8: teaching method for Hindi and English, with a pair of unseen passages every day.
  5. Weeks 9 and 10: full timed papers from the CTET previous year papers, with a review of every mistake.
Imran has finished his D.El.Ed and has about two hours a day. Maths content is easy for him, so he gives that part only one week and moves the saved time to EVS pedagogy, where his mock scores were lowest. Since nothing is deducted for wrong answers, he fills every circle before time runs out.

Books and the official bulletin

The syllabus that counts is the annexure in the bulletin posted at ctet.nic.in. For content, NCERT maths and EVS textbooks of classes 1 to 5 are enough for most questions. For CDP and pedagogy, your D.El.Ed notes and the NCERT focus group papers on maths, language and EVS teaching are sound sources. Before you register, confirm your route on the CTET eligibility page; the qualifying score is covered under CTET cut off, and state TETs sit alongside it on our teaching exams page.

Section names, question counts and the pass mark here follow the latest bulletin details we could confirm. CBSE releases a new bulletin each session, so check it before you begin.
