REET Mains Syllabus with the REET Pre Exam Pattern

TeachingRajasthan teachersLevel 1 and 2Updated 26 Oct 2026

The REET mains syllabus tests Rajasthan's geography, history and culture, Rajasthan general knowledge with the education scene and the RTE Act, your school subject, pedagogy, educational psychology and information technology, in one paper of 150 questions worth 300 marks. You can sit it only after clearing the REET eligibility test, often called REET pre.

So there are two different exams with two different bodies. The Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan conducts the eligibility test, and the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board conducts REET Mains, which works as the hiring exam for primary (Level 1) and upper primary (Level 2) teachers. This page explains both patterns, the REET exam syllabus for each, and how to prepare for them together.

REET pre and REET Mains: how the two exams connect

Think of REET pre as a licence and REET Mains as the job test. The eligibility exam only checks whether you can teach at a level. Passing it gives you a certificate, which recent reports say is now valid for life, but no post. Government teacher posts in Rajasthan's schools are then filled through REET Mains, where you compete for vacancies by merit.

Each exam has two levels. Level 1 is for teachers of classes 1 to 5, and Level 2 is for classes 6 to 8. If you want to keep both doors open, you can clear both levels of the eligibility test and then apply for whichever Mains posts you qualify for.

Every correct answer adds a single mark, and the clock runs for 2 hours 30 minutes. In the latest cycle the board added negative marking of one third of a mark and moved to five options per question. Recent reports put the pass mark at 60% for general candidates; the lower marks allowed to reserved groups should be confirmed in the notice. The full REET pre syllabus, topic by topic, is on our REET pre Level 1 syllabus and REET pre Level 2 syllabus pages.

REET Mains exam pattern and marking

The recruitment paper is longer in marks though not in questions. Its main features are:

  • 150 objective questions, 2 marks each, total 300 marks
  • Two and a half hours, answers shaded with a ball pen
  • A penalty equal to a third of the marks for every wrong answer
  • Five bubbles per question: A to D are answers, and E means you are leaving the question

Under the board's OMR rules, a question where nothing is shaded also loses one third of its marks, and leaving more than 10% of questions completely unmarked can disqualify you. Candidates get 10 extra minutes to check this. Fill E for every question you skip.

Sources disagree on the exact marks given to each section of the Mains paper, and the board can revise the split. Download the syllabus PDF attached to your advertisement on the RSSB website and treat that as final.

REET mains syllabus: topics in each block

Rajasthan geography, history and culture

Relief and physical divisions, the drainage system and lakes, climate types, soil and mineral wealth, forests and wildlife, agriculture and irrigation projects; ancient civilisations of the state, the major dynasties, peasant and tribal movements, the national struggle and the merger of princely states into Rajasthan; forts, temples, paintings, folk music, dances, fairs, festivals, dialects and literature.

Rajasthan general knowledge and the education scene

Recent events in Rajasthan, how the state runs its schools and education schemes, and the RTE Act with the duties it places on teachers.

School subjects and their pedagogy

For Level 1, Hindi, English, maths, general science and social studies at primary and upper primary depth, with teaching methods for each. For Level 2, the subject you applied in (Hindi, English, Sanskrit, social studies, or maths and science, among others), at a deeper level, with its pedagogy.

Educational psychology and information technology

Learning theories, child development, motivation, individual differences, assessment and evaluation; plus computer basics and the use of technology in teaching.

For the full chapter list by level, see the REET Mains Level 1 syllabus page or its companion, the REET Mains Level 2 syllabus.

What decides your rank in Mains

Two blocks usually decide merit. The Rajasthan block (geography, history, culture and general knowledge) is large in every version of the scheme, and every applicant answers the same questions on it, so a strong score here lifts you over people who know their subject equally well. For Level 2, the school subject is the other big block, and recent schemes give it about 120 of the 300 marks.

Pedagogy, psychology and IT carry fewer marks, but the questions repeat in style and are easy to score once you have read the material twice. Do not skip them.

Pooja cleared REET Level 2 in social studies and works at a private school in Jaipur. With four months to Mains, she keeps her mornings for Rajasthan history and culture with a map beside her, gives evenings to her own subject at class 9 and 10 depth, and on Sundays solves one full paper under OMR rules, filling E for every question she skips.

Study plan for REET Mains in 16 weeks

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Rajasthan geography and history, one region or dynasty at a time, with short notes.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: art, culture, schemes and the RTE Act, along with your school subject chapters.
  3. Weeks 9 to 12: pedagogy, educational psychology and IT; start weekly full length papers.
  4. Weeks 13 to 16: revise notes, read the last six months of state current affairs, and practise with two papers a week.

State school textbooks for Rajasthan studies and NCERT books for your teaching subject give you a sound base. Past papers on the RSSB website show how questions are framed, and our teaching exams hub compares REET with other state and central tests.

Who can apply for REET Mains

You must have passed the REET eligibility test at the right level and in the subject of the post. Level 1 posts call for senior secondary with an elementary education diploma (or the equivalents listed in the rules), and Level 2 posts ask for a degree in the relevant subject plus a B.Ed or an equivalent teaching qualification. The latest advertisement fixed 18 years as the lower and 40 years as the upper age for general applicants; reserved groups and women get extra years as per state rules. Degree rules are revised now and then, so go through the eligibility table in your own cycle's advertisement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between REET pre and REET Mains?

REET pre is the eligibility test run by the Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan, and it only gives you a certificate. REET Mains is the recruitment exam run by the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board, and its merit list decides who gets a teacher post.

Is there negative marking in REET Mains?

Yes. You lose a third of the marks of any question you get wrong. A question left with every circle empty is penalised too, so mark option E for any question you skip.

How many marks is REET Mains?

The paper has 150 questions of 2 marks each, so 300 marks in total, and you get 2 hours 30 minutes to finish it.

Do Level 1 and Level 2 Mains share one syllabus?

The Rajasthan, education, psychology and IT parts are common in nature. The difference is the subject block: Level 1 covers all primary subjects, while Level 2 tests the one subject you applied in at a deeper level.

What score clears the REET eligibility test?

Recent reports give 60% for general candidates and lower minimums for reserved groups. The figures can change by notification, so check the latest one before you plan.

How long is the REET certificate valid?

Reports on the latest cycles say the certificate is now valid for life. It still does not guarantee a post; you must compete in REET Mains for that.
