How vanrakshak selection works in Rajasthan

The board advertises forest guard posts together with forester (vanpal) and surveyor posts in its forest department recruitment, and the selection moves in four steps:

1. Written exam: a pen and paper multiple choice test, bubbles shaded in ink.
2. Body measurement round: height for all candidates, chest only for male candidates.
3. Fitness round: the long walk, plus field events for forest guards.
4. Medical examination and document verification.

The written paper is pitched at secondary school standard. For the qualification itself, reports have differed: earlier cycles asked for secondary (class 10) pass, while a report on the latest advertisement lists senior secondary. Vanrakshak exam pattern

With 120 minutes for 100 items, time is rarely the problem. The deduction is: lose 0.33 for each incorrect bubble and three loose guesses cancel a correct answer. Read the OMR instructions on the admit card as well, since the board sets its own rules for marking unattempted questions.

Subject-wise vanrakshak syllabus

General knowledge and social studies (50 marks)

• History of Rajasthan: major dynasties, the Rajput states, the events of 1857, kisan and Bhil uprisings, how the princely states merged into Rajasthan
• Culture and heritage: Rajput hill forts, palaces, lok devta and devi, Bhakti saints, melas, folk songs and dances such as ghoomar, crafts, traditional dress and ornaments
• Geography of Rajasthan: physical regions, the Aravalli range, the Thar, river systems and salt and freshwater lakes, seasons, soil types, forest cover, crops, mineral belts and canal projects
• Wildlife: national parks, sanctuaries, tiger reserves and conservation reserves of the state
• Polity: the governor, chief minister, state assembly, high court and panchayati raj in Rajasthan, alongside the basics of the Indian Constitution
• Economy: agriculture, industry, tourism and the main welfare schemes of the state

Everyday science (20 marks)

• Physical and chemical change, metals and non-metals, acids, bases and salts
• Light and its laws, simple ideas of force and motion
• Human body, nutrition, deficiency and infectious diseases
• Basic genetics terms, ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity and pollution
• Information technology and computer basics

Mathematics (15 marks)

• Factors and multiples, mean of a set, percent questions, ratios
• Gain and loss on sales, interest simple or compounded
• Work done together, journeys at given speeds, how much a tank holds, area of fields and walls
• Interpreting bar, line and pie charts

Current affairs (15 marks)

• Important events of Rajasthan and India in economy, society, culture, science, environment and sport
• Persons, programmes and policies in the news

Body measurements and the walk

Forest guards also face field events such as sit-ups, shot put, a cricket ball throw and a standing broad jump, with separate standards for men and women. Relaxed height and chest figures apply to some categories and regions. Take every number from the advertisement before you train.

Vanrakshak syllabus in Hindi

राजस्थान वनरक्षक भर्ती की लिखित परीक्षा में 100 प्रश्न होते हैं और कुल 100 अंक मिलते हैं। समय दो घंटे का है और गलत उत्तर की सज़ा 0.33 अंक है, इसलिए अंदाज़े से बचें। सामान्य ज्ञान और सामाजिक अध्ययन से 50 प्रश्न आते हैं, जिनमें राजस्थान के इतिहास, लोक संस्कृति, भूगोल, शासन व्यवस्था और अर्थव्यवस्था पर सवाल रहते हैं। दैनिक विज्ञान से 20, गणित से 15 तथा देश और राज्य की ताज़ा घटनाओं से 15 प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं। लिखित चरण पास करने पर पुरुषों को 4 घंटे में 25 किलोमीटर और महिलाओं को 4 घंटे में 16 किलोमीटर पैदल चलना होता है। तैयारी शुरू करने से पहले बोर्ड का ताज़ा विज्ञापन ज़रूर पढ़ें।

Ten weeks of preparation, weighted by marks

Half the marks come from Rajasthan general knowledge, so build your plan around it and fit the rest in.

1. First month: mornings on the state's past and culture, evenings on its geography and wildlife. Keep a district notebook listing parks, rivers and melas.
2. Fifth and sixth weeks: everyday science from class 9 and 10 books, plus the computer basics.
3. Seventh and eighth weeks: arithmetic, 25 questions a day, and current affairs from the last year.
4. Last two weeks: old RSSB papers in two hour sittings, scored with the 0.33 deduction.

Walk practice should start on the first day of study, not after the result. Many candidates who clear the paper fail the walk.
